      Nephew is going to be a Gear Jammer. Just don't let his mom know. I told my Mom my dream was to be a trucker and she said that she would rather I play piano in a Cat House. My Grandmother was in ear shot that day and got mad at her. She said that if the kid has an honest job she would be proud of me. If he wants to be trucker then leave it up to him.

    I’ve only heard a jake brake couple times, despite practically living on the highway all my life. First time was at my cabin just off the highway, as a kid: a transport truck’s jake brake went off right as it passed by while we were outside.
    Just about jumped out of my skin that day. I thought something was wrong with the truck until my dad explained!

    A Jake Brake is a type of compression release brake that helps truck drivers slow down their truck without wearing out the service brakes. Commonly called an engine brake, Jake Brakes are often used in large diesel engines on semi-trucks.

    The inside was NICE. It was pretty comfortable as far as the seat, placement of the pedals, steering wheel and shifter. The dash was pretty well thought out, however it rode like a basketball.
    It had Hendrickson rubber block suspension. You could tell the difference between the thickness of a penny and a dime if you ran them over with the tires....it was THAT rough.
    But TOUGH. 525 N14 cummins, RTLO 18913A super 13, 46000 pound rockwells with 3.55:1's in them.
    It would do 100MPH.

    I remember when I was in middle school. I had two classes that you have to go outside to the classroom, one classroom with a building itself and the other outside the school building. The school is right next to the freeway like 20 yards or something. When the classroom doors are open, everyone in class can hear the semi trucks with the jake brakes going and somebody was asking if that was a boat on the freeway and and the teacher expained how a jake brake works.

    When activated the outlet (exhaust) valves close and the compressed air on top of the cylinder start retarding the engine and the retarding is transfered to the drivetrain.

    • @rishishankarr3917
      @rishishankarr3917 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually the exhaust valve opens at the end of compression stroke and this drops the pressure inside the cylinder which in turn prevents the piston from gaining or maintaining momentum

    Brendan I have witnessed not one but two instances where a deer ran in front of a big rig travelling at highway speeds. The first time the deer bounced off the front side like a rubber ball and almost hit my car as it spun in the air. The second time the deer got sucked under the truck and other than a little wiggle in the cab it was business as usual. In neither case did the driver even slow down, much less stop, to assess the situation.

    @trd2009 a jake brake slows a truck down slowly over time like it doesnt do well with immediate stoping but then the brakes last 3 times longer and it is used for longer streches of slowing down and down hill so the truck doesnt reach dangerous speeds and turn the brake red glowing hot

    I believe that someday, cars MAY be driven by computers and GPS tracking, however...semi trucks are a LONG ways off.
    I'd LOVE to see a computer take a dump truck, get it loaded so the gross axle weights are right, send it to a jobsite and have it spread the load out perfectly. Truck AND pup trailer
    We're a LONG ways from that!!

    The cars to be hauled will drive themselves on the hauler (self driving, remember?), the hauler's system will lock them down maybe a human will lock them down. Then navi system will use sensors and calculations to pilot the rig/vehicles where they need to be delivered. Everything will operate within a set of parameters - car sticking out 1.237 feet ahead of cab - adjust calculations. No estimations that end with accidents. No human error. Cars arrive 3 days earlier, rig never needs sleep.

    Logging events is something computers will do far better than any human - no errors, no mistakes, no fraud, and the utmost precision. Logging came about because drivers steal/lie/make mistakes, and the logs keep them in line or provide an evidence trail.
    At first I could see low skill unloaders being required on some trucks - you'll get to ride in a truck all day as it quietly, efficiently moves between deliveries, so that's something to look forward to.

    i have a question for my fellow truckers out there. i've driven a 2004 freightliner columbia with that mercedes engine, and when you flip the engine brake switch, it doesn't make hardly any noise at all. you hear a soloenoid click when you let off the gas, but then theres nothing following it, except a very quiet air hissing kind of sound. Is this just a really weak jake, or some other kind of engine brake system?

    • @d4l678
      @d4l678 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes technically. But The jakes wouldn't last aslong being bob tail, but with full load and more weight more pushing the truck they would last longer like in the video.

    • @briansuderman5597
      @briansuderman5597 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could be right about the load being heavy but if you have no muffler and just a striaght pipe, THEN ITS LOUD!

    • @SUPERTRUCKER166
      @SUPERTRUCKER166 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because its decelerating slower due to the weight, so it spends longer at higher rpms hence more noise. Using the Jake when empty makes the same amount of noise (as the motors load does not change when using the jakes) just its shorter as its slowing down further.

    Also I used to work for a national food distributor and rode on the rigs. They had these funny devices called MUFFLERS that kept exhaust noise to minimum. We would get complaints about the refrigeration units on the trailers, so the drivers would turn them off BEFORE ENTERING RESIDENTIAL AREAS. See how a little courtesy and respect for others goes a long way? Sure better than being a tool and waking up half a neighborhood for your own giggles and grins.

    Mind you, I am loaded to 110 000 pounds, going down 5%+ grades while exiting off major highways.
    So if a jake brake is unnecessary, why do most trucks come with some form of exhaust or compression release brake on them?
    Hell, even the diesel fords, dodges and chevy trucks have exhaust brakes on them. They much louder than stepping on the foot brake.

    You don't think a sheep or deer can cripple a rig?
    If the air to air intercooler, radiator, power steering cooler or transmission cooler get damaged, that rig is parked.
    There isn't much to protect those vital parts of a truck but a stainless or aluminum grille bolted to some fiberglass.
    I've used a jake brake to scare off animals that were on the road.
    Actually, Thursday, a jake brake kept me from getting in a HUGE accident on the highway.

    MsFisherman1 what you don't understand is, I *don't* love jake brakes. I do enjoy the sound of an OHC flat six (or even four) boxer engine, and even own a vehicle with one of these engines with a free flow (loud) exhaust. But since I follow the golden rule, I never start and drive this vehicle before 10am. I keep RPMs low until I am away from populated areas. Open header trucks OTOH jake brake near me 7/24, disturbing my right to quiet enjoyment. This is the golden rule violation I mention.

  • @MiguelGasRa
    @MiguelGasRa 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jake Brake Won't "Fuck" your engine....
    I just lets the air compressed after the intake stroke escape, so it won't act like a spring as the piston descends. The exaust valve opens just after the intake valve closes on TDC. The only problem is the air exhausting at higher pressure that normal. But it's the same amount, just on a shorter "burst".

    wow... you have a valid argument, and so does everyone else... but think of it this way Rob, you can personalise your desk can't you, personalise your office space etc. etc. As a truck driver myself, aren't we allowed to customise our workplace? Loud Pipes in actual fact save lives as hitting large animals like Kangaroos, Emus, Cattle, Sheep, etc. can actually kill a truck driver and all those car drivers who travel too close. Loud Pipes scare away wild life and stock. Just saying

    a deer or sheep would be disastrous to a truck with out a bull bar mate, would tear the front end apart and the repair cost would be phenomenal. I have seen the aftermath of a Cow Strike on a truck with a bull bar, it went under and tore all the air lines out causing a severe lock up, as air is needed to keep the brakes off. he rolled it in the end, messy.
    as for your 1000w sound system, I used to work as a sound and lighting assistant and 1000w isn't all that much to be honest. but I understand
