I've started to change my attitude towards making music so that I don't try to do it anymore. Rather, I give inspiration a chance every day and if the inspiration doesn't ignite I don't let it disappoint me. The more often I give it a chance the greater the number of times it happens.
Your sentences are too vague to be understood honestly, but that inspiration is the brother of motivation. That's not the point of the video I think. I also wondered how you give a chance to inspiration everyday for inspiration itself unintentionally comes whenever it wants, like a weather condition.
@@fanusamurai Actually there are some situations we run out of the ability to create, once I was arrested unjustly and prisoned for years just because I criticized the Turkish government on the internet. I was drawing FL Studio to the notebook with my pencils and was trying to imagining the sound of the notes in the prison lol. And I also wonder how we are gonna make music when we really really get old and when our tinnitus reach the highest point and when we lose too much frequency spectrum to hear... 😀
"How often do you have good days?" That's the key question and hits perfectly to the point. This is one of the most modest yet the best videos I've ever watched on TH-cam. I discovered you on Ableton's certified trainers. As someone who lives in Estonia, I wondered who got the certification around and found you. And this video is a gem. I really liked. Thank you for sharing.
So true words Fanu. It’s indeed so similar to academic or any other writing. The scientific clue you might have had on your mind is the dopamine brain that seeks instant gratification and work means that this can also take longer. What I found always helpful was having someone external involved that you are also accountable to through deadlines! Whether a buddy waiting for a piece (of music or writing) or a vety formal deadline. Most importantly, if a deadline is not met, don’t give, just as you said, and never put yourself down for it - just get back to it.
last seconds are awesome )) straight from the living room )) I could say charisma & ability to laugh from yourself is another tool that is hidden here. Still remember Kyiv UA drumfunk party in noname club in-the-middle-of-the-nowhere long time ago & Fanu did some magic that make all that space glittering - Its possibly energetic effect from happiness + honesty + love-to-process > it become a beautiful ritual a bit & more important it gives a touch to that state that possibly last forever as it still strong endless felling from it. Anyway I am so thankful to listen Balcony Acid and be redireced finnaly to this channel to learn more. 💪🙏🙌🖤
Thanks! Yes, it's a very non-trendy topic; we have lots of videos on making gnarly basses and all that, but this side of things is much less covered. Prob because it's hard to formalize. And that's why I'm trying to help :)
My dude! This is such valuable advice again. The 30 min. rule is really a good idea that I will try. I know that if you don't feel like working you need about 30 min to get into the zone. Sometimes watching a documentary about some legendary band in the studio really gets me motivated and that makes it a bit easier to get to work. But yea, discipline!
Yeah man! Sometimes I read artist interviews to get into the mood too (love interviews of Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert etc…long-timers often have good things to say)
I'm just gonna take this opportunity of a new video of yours popping up in my feed to thank you for the wonderful music you have made. It has taken me to wonderful places in my mind and soul, and still does.
GF is handling the gaming…she's into board games, just got a Nintendo Switch etc…it's been all about Animal Crossing here :D I have a PS4 and have been heavily into Fallout games for example.
@@fanusamurai haha nice. its good to have a little fun so its not all 100% work all the time. I need to check out Fallout. Ive been playing Ghost of Tsushima lately.
I have pretty severe ADHD and used the dopamine cycle of motivation to try and get things done, but of course it was unsustainable. I similarly picked up a Polyend tracker on sale and it was sitting for a month in my closet. I watched probably like 5-6 YT channels including your video on breaks chopping but I never actually started because I knew myself enough by now that I knew I would stop, so what's the point of even starting? Your point about sitting for 30m and working on the bassline was really good. I guess I always thought I need to finish a song or I need to bang out something 'significant' in one session - but the definition of that 'significant' was always something I made impossible for myself so that I always set myself up for failure due to the expectation. So now I am going to start without the expectation of making a tune or song but work on one aspect of the track like breaks or bassline or whatever in a session. This goes against all those videos that say that if you can finish X number of bad tracks in a month you will get better, but that advice does not work for people like me.
Yeah man! I always make my tunes little by little, to be honest. Never been one to start and make a tune in one sitting…never been one of those dudes and I’d never expect that of myself either. I enjoy the babysteps…they often work to get the bigger whole done, little by little!
I would instinctively reject this philosophy if Fanu wasnt the single most prolific and consistent drum and bass musician i can think of. You would think the output would exceed the quality of each release but thats not the case.

@@fanusamurai Yep, reading something as well. I like reading biographies of bands I love. Some have really inspiring info about them recording tracks.
The 30 minute rule works really well for me. Great advice Fanu!
Yeah, just starting is often the biggest hurdle. Once you get rolling, momentum often takes over.

Great words of wisdom Janne! Thank you ❤️
