  • Shoes has been a musical force for over 50 years. Jeff Murphy, John Murphy, and Gary Klebe have taken their love of Beatlesque melodic rock and turned it into a sound unlike any other.
Jeff Murphy is a storyteller, a musician, and an all-around nice guy. Join Bijan from Pop Rocks Radio for his chat with this indie music pioneer as they discuss the band's history, their iconic releases, and how their music ended up in a Travis Scott song!

Jeff Murphy has written a book about their major-label debut album, Present Tense called "Birth of A Band, The Record Deal and The Making of 'Present Tense': 40th Anniversary Edition" available here: amzn.to/47B6V8M
Also, check out Mary E. Donnelly's definitive biography of the band, "Boys Don't Lie: A History of Shoes" available here: amzn.to/42hpn5n
Very special thanks to Ed Turner for putting this whole thing together for us! Ed produced an excellent documentary titled "Ticket to Write: The Golden Age of Rock Music Journalism". Check that out here: • Ticket to Write (2016)...

Fell in love with this band when I first saw them on MTV around 1983 and I've been obsessed ever since - thanks for the interview!

Way back in 1979 when I started my rock and roll love affair with all things New Wave, Punk, Post Punk. I discovered the album Present Tense by the Shoes. I loved the album and have been a huge Shoes fan ever since. Still cannot believe the song Its Too Late did not go top 40. Great Interview! Worth checking out the cd by the band Underground Cartoons produced by Jeff, sometime in the 1990"s.

Thank you! I'll never understand how they just weren't huge, but their fans are some of the most devoted I've seen. Oh, and I listened to a few tracks off "Shoot for the Sky" which was great! Thanks for the rec!

Had the pleasure of working with Jeff on our record Mr. Deelish with my band at the time The Quick. Jeff was so great. As he indicates in this interview he loved the creative process. He also sang background vocals on Caroline is Crying. Can’t say enough about Jeff and Shoes!

Hi Dave - Mr. Dee-lish is an awesome album! I admit I only came to know about The Quick and Oh Boy! recently (thanks to Chris Cerasoli) and didn't realize Jeff produced it, but man, is it great. You guys obviously worked well together! Thanks for watching!

Your shows are amazing btw. I drive around with a note pad writing down songs and artists to support! Thank you!

Great video, I’m a huge fan. I’ve always wondered how all those unique sounds were created.

They say don’t meet your heroes but I attended a show in Indiana back in ‘14 and I joined the band backstage anyhow. They were a great bunch of guys and they slayed in that gig.

I love to hear stuff like that. In my brief time chatting with Jeff, I can say he has been so cool and gracious...just the nicest guy. Would have loved to have been there for the gig, as well! This year is 50 years since their first album "Heads or Tails"...fingers crossed they do something fun for the 50th (and get back on stage, too). Thanks!!

The opening bit with the confused elderly gentleman brings to mind a question I've often had: Are there any particular methods that are helpful in looking up bands named after household items like "Shoes"? It's not as hopeless as trying to find information on the old Matt LeBlanc TV series "Episodes" (every show on television has episodes, for God's sake!) but it can still get very frustrating...

lol...you're not kidding. "shoes band" works pretty well, but still end up with a bunch of random stuff! Thanks (as always) for watching!

You have to Google “shoes” plus the name of one of their songs. That usually works for me
