The 90's was my generation and the early to mid period was a glorious time for loud noisy guitar rock, but it was also when I discovered this genre they kept calling "power pop" after the reissues of the Big Star albums on CD. My favourite artist in that genre would Matthew Sweet, he's recorded three or four classic albums and has remained consistently a great songwriter. He's my vote for a full video. Cheers!
Overwhelming Colorfast -- Their s/t debut is one of my favorite releases of the 90s. Produced by Butch Vig it's power pop with a slightly grungy/punky veneer. It's one of those 'lost' albums that deserves a lot more attention. The Chevelles -- Check out the compilation 'At Second Glace' for an excellent slice of this Australian band's power pop output. Really good stuff.
Oh man...I admit I had totally forgotten about that band, but just listened to a couple tracks off their debut and it's so great...thanks for that! I was just introduced to The Chevelles not that long ago, as well...I think their album Girl God is awesome! Thanks for watching!
You're absolutely spot on with them...great Seattle band (well, great band, but I love that they're from Seattle, too). 😁. I briefly worked with Braden Blake at a tech company in the early aughts...nice guy, too. Thanks for that and thanks for watching!
Very cool that you know Braden! I really like his voice, melodies and delivery. Revisited their Famous album over the weekend and was impressed all over again. Great channel/station you're running. Thank you for all you do for our enjoyment. :-)
@@jimmytrainor5512 Thank you! I really appreciate your kind words. It would be a stretch to say I know Braden, but, funny story (and maybe TMI) when we worked together, we introduced ourselves because we always seemed to end up in the restroom on the same schedule...got awkward, so we thought we should at least know each other's names. 🤣
@@poprocksradio Ha, great story! Perfectly understandable, too, and not the least bit weird. ;-) Listening to "A Year In Pajamas" right now. Talented dude, for sure.
While I am an amateur historian of the entire history of this beautiful subgenre, as a teenager/young man in the 90s, this will always be my fave era. You listed a few of my fave acts, but there are countless great bands of the time. I fucking love your channel. Long live power pop!
Thanks for that! I really think that the 90s gave us one of the more unique and diverse periods of music, and is so much more than "grunge". Please send some of your faves my way...would love to hear them. Thanks for watching!
I'm late to the party. Great channel!! Terrific production and its too bad you have to side step sound clips from the actual bands. Excited to see more!
Thank you and welcome to the party! I really appreciate your kind words. I totally agree...I would love to include the bands' music in all the videos. I'll keep working on ways to squeeze them in there and also stay out of trouble. 🤣. Thanks for watching!!
Excellent compilation & vid. You hit all the greats IMO as well as the listing bands like Ride towards the end. Really sad re Jim Ellison. Saw the Ish open for the Pretenders twice in ‘94. Temple Theatre in Tacoma & Commodore Ballroom in B.C. Stellar performances. Wish Jim could have rode out that rough patch. He is sorely missed. On a lighter note, so cool that you mentioned Velvet Crush & Redd Kross. Both bands seem to get overlooked often. Lots of cross pollination with Matthew Sweet & VC.
Welcome back, sir! Thank you...I really appreciate that. I never saw Material Issue live...those must have been amazing shows (love the Pretenders, as well!). Thanks!!
Why Sloan isn’t a household name and one of the biggest bands on the planet, I’ll never know. They have risen to the top of my favorite bands list, second only to the Beatles imo. After all these years and many albums they are still putting out consistently great material. Their newest album, “Steady”, is my top rated album for 2022. I wish they would get out of Canada more often and come to Portland, Oregon so I can see them live! Lots of other good bands in this video as well, thanks for making it. 😎
Thank you! Totally agree...I'm just amazed at how they have consistently put out great albums (over such a long period, too!) They have a big following here, but nowhere near where it should be. Hope to see them live one of these days, as well! Thanks!!
Coming from Hollywood in the early-80s, a lot of these bands are new to me. The Bings got popular in the wake of The Knack. But, we never promoted ourselves as a "Power Pop" band. Back in 1980-83 the genre didn't exist. We called ourselved "New Wave", which included bands like The Bings, who were melodic. But, Punk Rock also defined us - as a band whose guitars and pounding drums invoked The Ramones. It was an era of amazing creativity and musical cross-pollination.
20/20 deserves a mention - their first two albums are power pop masterpieces. Also Mayflies USA in the late 90s - early 00s (and they're reportedly working on new material as of 2024) - their first two records were produced by Chris Stamey of the dB's
Amen, my friend! 20/20 is my favorite power pop band, hands down. I have something planned for them, though I heard they may be working on new music, so I'm holding back for now. Also, I hadn't heard The Mayflies USA - listened to a couple tracks ("You and Me" and "Ariel") and loved them! Thanks for that rec and thanks for watching!
Nobody ever mentions the Paley Brothers. Their compilation featuring Ramones is gotta be near the top of the list. (And brother Andy helped Brian Wilson do some of his best solo work, though it’s only been intermittently released.)
Great mention…love the Paley Brothers! I couldn’t agree more! Spoiler alert: you might find a little something about them in this video: th-cam.com/video/PQvKEGSQsZ8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_2-t24LVPLHiLERZ. Thanks for watching!
Though they're more from the '70s and '80s, I'm still looking forward to something (hopefully in-depth) about the Rubinoos. Information about the Tazmanian Devils would be awesome too.
LOVE the Rubinoos...they are on my list for something a little more in-depth. Listened to a couple tracks by The Tazmanian Devils - "Feel Alright" and "Don't Hold Back" - great stuff! They go on the list! Thanks for the rec and thanks for watching!
@@poprocksradio Great!! Looking forward to what you create - by the way, I love listening to the Posies too, Material Issue's song "Diane" has some of my favorite lyrics: "Diane's got everything, a helicopter and a submarine" as does "Suddenly Mary" by the Posies: "Suddenly Mary fell in the water, were I not weary, I would have caught her"
Ah! They would have been a great inclusion! Of course, they almost deserve a video by themselves...their story is kinda hysterical and worth digging into. Thanks for that and thanks for watching!

I've been thinking about doing a video about those guys and bands like Candy - power pop bands marketed as something else by confused (maybe "confused" is generous) record labels. 😁. Honestly, it's criminal. Thanks for these and thanks for watching!
