I remember seeing The Sorcerer in the theater in the 70's, and being so impressed by the music and Soundtrack. Was my first introduction to Tangerine Dream.

Dirty Dancing - I don't give a shit what anyone thinks, it's an 80's classic especially if you were in high school at the time. The Swayze with She's Like the Wind fucking rules.

    Natural Born Killers
Lost Highway: these two soundtracks were created/compiled by Trent Reznor. The song selection creates such a dark and ominous mood, mirroring the movies well.
Dazed & Confused: I can’t listen to songs like Tuesday’s Gone and Slow Ride without thinking of this movie.
And it’s been many years since I’ve seen Heavy Metal. But I remember hearing Mob Rules for the first time in that movie and thinking it was amazing.

Ryan is in my good books this week for mentioning Phantom of the Paradise. The movie was a flop when it came out. The only place it was a hit is Winnipeg, Canada. I’m a Winnipegger. I am one of the kids who went to see it more than once. I’ve always loved the soundtrack. The movie is celebrated to this day in Winnipeg. A 50th anniversary show is being held there later this year, with a live band playing the soundtrack. I wish I could go to it, but not to be.

    4. Rock Star - Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer," Kiss' "Lick It Up," and Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" all on the same album? Heck yeah!

    Heavy Metal
    Singles
    Purple Rain
    Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    Dazed and Confused
    Superman: The Movie
Times Square. There are also a glut of teen comedies and dramas from the 80s that have great music on EPs and soundtracks, such as:
    Valley Girl
    The Big Chill
    Some Kind of Wonderful
    Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
    The Breakfast Club
    Footloose
    The Lost Boys
    Sixteen Candles

All of your mentions are excellent.
Movies like Sixteen Candles were never given a proper soundtrack release, but you can find fan created CD's. Love the Valley Girl, also.
I am a big fan of the Times Square movie as well, after seeing it multiple times in the theater in 1980. Soundtrack is fantastic, so I'm going to have to look up your discussions about it. The DVD I have has special commentary with it with Robert Stigler, the producer, and Robin Johnson. Pretty cool. They state how heavily cut the movie was, and the extra footage was never saved.

Great topic picked by Rob and thanks to everyone for their picks and honorable mentions. Definitely a person who enjoys soundtracks and picking just five is difficult so here's five for at least right now.
    1. Forrest Gump - for the kid in me who became a teenager at the end of the 60s
    2. Jackie Brown - for Tarantino films, this it the one played the most
    3. Purple Rain - favorite Prince album
    4. Easy Rider - see explanation for the first choice and some other sentimental reasons
    5. Grease - maybe a bit cheesy, but catchy songwriting and scratches a personal enjoyment of good musicals.
And some not so much rock (& roll) or metal
    1. Amadeus - for reigniting a personal love a classical music in general and this composer specifically
    2. Shawshank Redemption - Thomas Newman too often not mentioned in film score composers. See Wikipedia for his list. So many good scores but going with this.
    3. Jaws - John WIlliams [share the name but none of the fame]. Another great film composer and could pick several but going with a seasonal favorite hear. The most recognized two notes in music from the start.
    4. Excluding Yellow Submarine - the other three Beatles soundtracks mentioned in the show.
    5. O Brother, Where Art Thou. Mentioned in the episode and agree completely with those remarks.
Thanks again, everyone. Not just for the music, but some history or the music and film choices.

Was wishing for a soundtrack episode for the longest time. Thanks HVS. Special thanks to Rob for his suggestion. Here are my picks .
A - Music Score made specially for the film
    3. The Clint Eastwood spaghetti western Trilogy. A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad &
    The Ugly
    2. The Last of the Mohicans
    1.Conan the Barbarian.
B - Soundtracks with songs selected for the movie
    3, Spawn 1997
    2, Natural Born Killers
    1. From Dusk Till Dawn

Favourite soundtracks? In no particular order:
The Jungle Book. Not rock, don't care. The first movie I ever saw at a cinema. The songs are all classics and I could sing the entire soundtrack even now.
Singles. Cameron Crowe's ode to the Seattle "grunge" scene.
Flash. Just backing up everything Craig said.
Guardians Of The Galaxy. 3 movie soundtracks and the "Cosmic Mix" soundtrack to the animated TV series, featuring 2 James Gang songs, and one each by Joe Walsh, Queen, Thin Lizzy, Dobie Gray, Three Dog Night, Blue Swede and some 70's disco tunes.
Paris, Texas. Ry Cooder's atmospheric acoustic slide blues.
    Honourable mentions:
    Bladerunner. Vangelis's classic
Rocky Horror Picture Show. Probably the only one that could out camp Queen's Flash
Iron Man 2. The Best Of AC/DC, by any other name.

One from my youth that was always shown on Night Flight was Another State of Mind. Awesome soundtrack of California punk/hardcore. Cool documentary following Social Distortion and Youth Brigade in 1982 as they go on a DIY summer tour. They convert a late 60's school bus for the tour with both bands and crew living within. Needless to say, hilarity ensues. I was a teenager in my own band when this came out and saw it many times on the USA Network. The Night Flight show specifically. Awesome documentary that I would assume is somewhere on TH-cam. Check it out.

@@countralfus6408 You are right Ralph, it IS a pure documentary I guess. Suburbia was more of a movie for sure, with Mike B the flea, who we all know. I think I was tripping on acid the first time I saw that, and the dog scene with the little kid at the beginning freaked me out.

    Boogie Nights!!
The Wild Life is pretty darn good with some original instrumentals by Eddie Van Halen.
Dazed and Confused, Reservoir Dogs, American Graffiti are also all great.
Wendy Carlos did the music for Clockwork Orange, Tron and The Shining, all of which have great moments. Little did I know until just recently that Wendy began life as Walter (!) and was a pioneer in electronic classic music (1968’s Switched On to Bach).

    No order. Just mentions:
Top Gun. Say what you will about the movie but it has some really uplifting and powerful tracks on it. A few songs in the middle are a bit 80's fluff but the memorable stuff gets me going.
Blade Runner (by Vangelis). Perhaps not the most obvious soundtrack but give it a few spinns and it is very rewarding.
Cinema Paradiso (by Ennio Morricone). Morricone is mostly famous for his western themes (with good right) but as a whole album.. This is probably my favorite. Just so touching music. I really like the movie but I think the soundtrack might be even better.
The Godfather Part II (by Nino Rota). The Godfather always get mentioned as a movie but the soundtrack doesn't really get nearly as much love. I think the second movie has an even stronger soundtrack than the first.

...most of my choices are listed below, but I have a few favorite "scores" (as opposed to "soundtracks," which I believe are 2 different entities...)...Danny Elfman's score to "Batman" was really cool...actually, just about everything Elfman does I'm a fan of...as for "Dazed And Confused," you need "Patrick's Mix," which compiles each and every single song you heard, in full or not, in the movie...I watched it from start to finish one day, pausing to recognize snippets of songs being played on car radios, and other songs left off of the soundtrack to make a "complete" soundtrack for it...pretty impressive list of songs...and, finally, here's one for Pete and the Journey fans here...to the best of my knowledge, I've never heard him bring up the soundtrack to the 1980 Japanese movie "Dream After Dream," which was the last album Gregg Rollie recorded with the band...except for maybe 2 songs, very un-Journey-like, but an interesting listen, all the same.
