Sax's can sound like almost anything. Wish I still played it. But look up saxophone orchestras. I've seen some big ones and they sound almost the same as a regular orchestra. At times I could swear I was hearing other woodwinds, brass, and even strings. Sax is really one of the most versatile instruments
Kenni is amazing wow. The sax making different animal sounds has got me thinking that maybe all Colin Stetson's music is just him trying to imitate the sound of some elder god monstrosity only he can hear.
I love how Cory randomly plays bass on some tracks. It's like he's should be in a band with a group of guys who play different instruments each song 😉😉😉
Were you talking about Heist or the actual closing of the episode??? Heist was great. The song that Cory briefly alludes to is "Simon F15" by the Fearless Flyers. The song at the VERY end is the same motif "FE D, FE FF ED (D up and octave) FE D, FE CC BBb" with Kenni taking a solo. So either you really like Heist or you should check out Simon F15
Does Kenni live near the West Bank of the U of M? That chickadee sound at 7:08 reminds me of a bird call I used to hear a lot around the west end of the Washington Ave Bridge in the early '00s.
i feel like people dont talk about this enough. he had to develop a whole new skillset to play the instrument upside down and i wish he would dive into it a little more
If you didn't know Kenni Holmen before this interview you absolutely have to check out the group "Hornheads"! They used to play on Prince albums and their own stuff is outstanding. I have never heard such a tight group of brass players playing without rhythmic instruments. Kenni Holmen's solo on "Isn't She Lovely" is out of this world!
First of all we need to know what a tritone is: it's the sharp fourth or flat fifth degree in a scale. Now, a secondary dominant is the dominant of the scale's dominant. In C Major, for example, the dominant is G and it's dominant is D. So D is the secondary dominant here. On a simple ii-V-I chord progression, in C Major, we would have Dmin-G-Cmaj using the Tritone Substitution For Secondary Dominants we would substitute the D for it's tritone, which would be Ab (it's flat fifth), leaving us with the progression Ab-G-Cmaj And the reason we would do that is for that extra spiciness.
Cory's bass tone is🔥🔥🔥 He plays so lightly but it comes out so punchy, I need some explanation for that shit! There has to be more to it than just some compression pedal/unit
Heist was amazing. Gonna find that song and add it to a playlist. Oh and the rest of the episode was great too. Hope we get to learn about tritone substitutions some day!

I just wanted to learn about tritone substitutions for secondary dominants :(
The household 9-year-old thought it was pretty funny. (But also wanted to watch some original Attenborough afterwards.)

How do I support Cory Wong and the Wongnotes beyond a thumbs up and subscribe? I just don't want them to ever go away. . .
Cory has a merch store I think it’s linked in his bio
This is a also in support of the album which you can buy. Cory Also has a Bandcamp page with pretty much all of his previous albums.

Kenni just showed us all of that on sax and then right after it he rips a devastating flute solo
check out the Cory Wong Live in Minneapolis concert video, at one point he shows up with a piccolo and everybody loses their minds
Not taking anything away from the guy, but the two instruments share the same fingering for their valves which makes things somewhat easier.

Jon lampley for ya
A show where the presenter holds a Strat and has a big band behind is my type of show! 🙌
Honestly slightly disappointed I didn't get a review of tritone substitutions for secondary dominants.
But can we talk about the substitutions tho? I know Cory can nerd out on that for an hour and I’m 100% here for it.
this whole series has been a feel good vibe from start to finish
12:01 The way Jon just palmed that mute and kept playing
and here I thought only guitarists could palm mute haha
Did you see his stank face during Kenni's flute solo? This guy gets it!
Let's be honest. This is the episode we've all been waiting for!
Yeah, Cory eased in a comment that the Stevie Wonder Medley is on this episode
Yeah Kyle Gass is Amazing
Kenny Holman is just everything i aspire to be. What a sound
just practice 8 hours a day for 4 years straight like he did and you might just get there.
Kenni's chops are insane!!
11:18 Kenni is out here quoting St Thomas, he really is a tenor player
HAha
I've enjoyed every single episode, but Kenny making animal noises on sax takes the prize for my favourite. Cory, please don't stop.
Kenni Holmen is from another planet! Wow
Oh My Goodness...This was my fav episode thus far. Thanks to everyone involved...
my mouth was hanging open when Kenni started playing in the interview

Crikey, Kenni is not just an animal, he's a BEAST. Don't think I've ever heard slap tongue before - such a cool texture!
Also, Jon Lampley's 'digging someone's solo' face is a highlight throughout this whole series.

yup..
