I think BMW's logic was that, if you shift at redline as intended, you'll be high enough in the rev band in the next gear that you won't drop back into that annoying power dip. That makes some sense and I get that it's for noise compliance, but I would have preferred that they just supply it with a stupidly large muffler or something and not mess with the power delivery, because you can't always ride a liter bike to redline on the street, but you CAN replace a muffler. If you feel there’s no power in low rpm, shouldn’t you down shift? I never rode a S1000RR but I know that my R1 has definitely a wider range of torque “availability” thanks to the CP4 engine. (CrossPlane). Still, I’m thinking that this new S1000RR ain’t solely made for track use but for road use compared to a V4S Panigale for instance (or V4R which is ridiculously expensive...)
From what I've heard the lack of mid range power is just down to the American emission laws. Here in Australia we don't have that issue and I'm pretty sure the European modern doesn't either. Aussie guys at 6tdegrees did a review on the bike and didn't have that problem.

Really don’t see an issue with having to stop to change settings on the digital display. No matter where you are, it’s dangerous. They probably have to do this by law. Takes you away from concentrating on what you are doing, riding safely.
I think it's good you have to stop. Could you imagine catching the mode button and altering the wrong setting. It could seriously cause you problems. I would say the suspension is running soft at the front as you are featuring the throttle through the corner and therefore it's upsetting the balance because the setting is wrong in the first place. The flat spot sucks but if you have the right gear and keep a smooth throttle you can stay on the tip of it and get straight on the power. I really like the review and I like your honesty.
Honest guy, not kissing the ass of the companies, and of course he's right, you should always wait at least a year or two so they can perfect their imperfections. Great video and ill stick to my 2016.
Stay in lower gear in turns or get a Harley if you want high torque at low rev coming out of the turn... Nice smooth fast riding otherwise. I think this beast is special and just needs a little time to figure out where the G spot is... 😱😂😎
Just sold my 2020 today myself. Same reasons overall with bigger emphasis on the flat spots. At altitude where I'm at they're not flat spots, they're dead spots. I don't need a draft bike BMW.....
The loss was very minimal. Couple hundred $$$. Bike is rare at this point and some people would have the bike flashed like any other bike these days and risk the warranty. Also my bike came randomly with Pilot RS tires. Others came with Metzler. Very drafty crafty BMW. I would like my superbike with grippiest tire available, not something you found in a warehouse somewhere....
that's a lot of things to go through just to make a change man, i get your frustration bro. It's always good to be able to make a change quickly while riding.
Thanks for the honesty. You've saved peaple thousands. This is how you force manufacturers into fixing the problems. If the bike don't get a shit to of good reviews simply don't buy it. I love the bmw s1000rr. Ive got a 2016 i bought new in april 2016. Here it is july 2019 and I've put 30250 miles on it. I've been watching this new 2020 for some time. I have to say i'm let down. Speed bug is selling his 2020 also. Once again thank you for the truth.
It’s not a 600. It should not be anemic below 9 grand. Stop making excuses. Supposedly the whole reason for the shiftcam technology was to have power down low. Hoping BMW sorts the bike out soon.
I guess I don’t get it, depending on the motor character I change my shift points. Sounds like the flat spot is 3500 to 8500, so ride it like a 4 cyl 600. Keep it in the power band! I ride my 1290 twin different than my 1000 4 cylinder.
"There is no power here, see?!" - No shit dude.. you're in 5th gear, trying to race down the back straight. Drop a gear or 2. If you want low rpm power, get a Superduke R. Honestly, some of your points are valid.. like the sudden change with the shiftcam.. but most of the time, I feel you are nitpicking. You definitely (on this session you uploaded on TH-cam) didn't try to get the max performance out of this bike.
Your review was one of the most interesting videos I have seen and that is because you were able to evaluate, ride, and share your thoughts with us without throwing the bike down the track! I know, I've crashed twice at T Hill and my focus was on riding and nothing else. What you did was pretty remarkable in my opinion and I understand your frustration. From your power band description, the bike performed like an old turbo without a turbo. I wonder how BMW thought they could let this issue get by without anyone noticing? I wonder how they are responding to the chatter? Perhaps they are working like mad on a software upgrade? Furthermore, how can you race this machine under changing track conditions when you can't make on the fly adjustments? The advantage of all the electronics is kind of neutralized under those circumstances and it's certainly a PITA to have to enter the pits each time you want to make changes or simply fiddle with the suspension settings. I've had a number of sport bikes over the years, none have had any electronic aids, my Ducati 999R is a vintage 03 model and in my case I guess ignorance is bliss. In my world it's a hellava lot faster than me, but I love the bike. However, I've had the itch to own a more modern machine with the electronics just to have fun with the settings, truly a marvel of engineering by my standards. On the other hand, keeping it simple might be best because I would be the type to run off the track while messing with the buttons. Like flying an airplane and knowing stick and rudder, on a motorcycle I equate that to hand/ throttle control, basic principles no one should lose sight of. Thanks again and much appreciated.
Good review. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this bike. It is a beautiful machine and a lot of positives about it. I’ve heard other reviews about the dead spot at 6k to 8k rpms. Supposedly it’s only the bikes that they are sending here, to the USA.
The flat spot was done on purpose, not by mistake. How else do you expect BMW to pass through all the emission regulations without heavily restricting the bike? Shouldn't be a problem because who even rides stock ECU bikes anymore?
Ask Aprillia, Ducati, and the likes. Don't make exuses for BMW. They F'ed up this release. EPA affects all the same. This bike's had so many issues it's not even funny. Ticking noise, flat spot, delyed arrival, heavy vibration, dumb TPMS, user unfriendly display, some wheels with defects, etc.
gonna ask for the dumbest request but can you please give drills or practices to improve cornering. i'm sure you are very familiar with the track that's why you decelerate and accelerate at the right time but your cornering was just perfect
What you got in the US is the very first batch of S1000RR 2019 Models made in Spandau, Berlin. The real 2020 modelyear was just released by BMW Germany. It has one more package (carbon fibre package for 2k €) to order and one additional color "Hockenheim Silber" (silver) option. Rest stays 100% same to modelyear 2019. In Germany the "modelyear 2019" has a callback for 340 Machines as well as a software update that is done with the first service. Furthermore the ECU of the US bikes differs from the EU-software. Gear 2,3,4 and 5 are limited in throttle response. The reason is kind of dubios. Word on the forums is, that it has something to do with emissions. The bikes delievered in Germany now (orginally scheduled for april) are fast and brutal as hell and way faster than the old S1000RR. I orderd mine (fully loaded) in November 2018 and got no bike until now. It is scheduled for october ... I road the bike and its way better than the old s1000rr, but i can feal your anger about beeing second class customer.
Dude 1st off great video!!!! Very honest I like that you have a new subscriber. I was able to see what you were explaining. It's a lot of hype around all the new bikes! Good to see an all around review.
I love a good honest review. Only a handful of youtubers do this anymore. Look at afancyanimal youtube page and look at the speedbug page, they put in their 2 cents on this bike too.
Motonosity just posted about this exact issue and got a re-flashed ECU and problem is gone. Interesting how I just watched his video about it earlier tonight and now I found your video complaining if the same exact think. All beemer 1000RR's USA spec'd bikes I believe were shipped this way.
How does wheelie control work? Doesn't it stop you from doing wheelies by restricting the power? If so, wouldn't that be the reason why you are not getting power at lower RPMs?
Is the lap time quicker? Irrespective of engine performance? Sometimes its just a smoother power delivery. Having heaps of torque feel behind the seat does not mean one is going quicker could be the suspension is tuned better? If your lap times are slower than the previous model then that sucks... had my hopes up for this bike.
@@CaliMotoTV All your points are valid. I have ridden both and the US bike is decidedly worse. It needs a new full exhaust system put onto it and remapped on a dyno to get the most out of it.
Yeah... fly by wire is awesome when it works... Keep pushing the envelope, dude - it benefits all of us. :) When this dude comes up behind me in the twisties on any bike - I'll be the dude that he says, like "get out of my way grandpa"... lol and my 1999 R1100RT will still have more to give than I can ever use. You push it on the track, and I will continue to ride the highways and byways, and we will all get along just famous.
Coming out of a corner in 5th gear at 100 mph talking about how its pinned and you have no power?the bike should be in 2nd gear at that speed.its not the bike, its you 😂
I guess I don’t understand. You are comparing your stock 2020 to your heavily modified 2015 that has countless hours of set up on it to get it just perfect for you. Set the 2015 back to stock, anything that had a tool put on it gets undone. Now which one is better out of the box so we can make an educated decision on which model to purchase?
The dip in the mid rev range is not a flaw that BMW missed, it is on purpose due to DOT noise regulation. I believe you can easily tune it out but I guess that means 700 bucks to restore the bike to the stock euro map, which is dumb. BMW should offer free *race* map for people who want only stay on *track*.
Indeed, in Europe the reviews are completely the opposite, that it has gained a lot of mid-range, more torque as compared to the old bike. The conclusion is that U.S. bikes seem to be electronically limited.
@@CaliMotoTV Shit I just realized that voids your warranty. I did it to my Tuono and thought, fuck I hate the fact now I have no warranty, but then it never bothered me since the bike was reliable AF.
Interesting that there's more going on than just the flat spot from @7200-8200 which is supposedly related to the exhaust flapper valve (and related map). Since it looks like you've got the full Akrapovic system, I guess that's not the whole story.
Everything is working correctly and how it was intended to. The problem is the requirements. BMW therefor had to tune it differently for the US than for the EU-markets.
It's really a shame BMW doesn't offer some kind of "courtesy tune" through the dealership which gives you the Euro spec tune at some kind of nominal fee. These bikes are nuts once they are sorted out. Even the stock Euro bikes put out more HP and don't have as horrible of a dip.
Never buy first model year anything. Period. The flat spot throttle restriction on the US model is ridiculous. I'll hang on too my 16 for a couple more years.
Sadly, i feel the same way about my 20, not sure if i'll let it go, or keep it and pray BMW, releases a update to fix some of the throttle shortcomings..
Cali Moto TV I mean realistically, if it wasn’t for the poor power delivery, overall it woulda been a worthy successor.. the power we have available in 6th gear alone from freeway speed, up, are a testament that the engine is a monster, just we don’t get all of it, and paid for all of it and thensome..
Shift cams are kind of a gimmick. Ideally you stay above 8,000 rpm the whole time. They change the lift but not the valve diameter so volumetric efficiency is not optimized.
Its rough when I can hear the engine tick just from his simple mic. I've had 2 BMW's but time to try something a bit different. While a flash can fix some of the issues it's not s fix all and regardless of what you say flash tuners cant tell you if BMW has a hidden counter yet so they could possibly void your warranty.
Cali Moto TV looking more info with this issue, i find there are really massive restrictions with throttle mapping going on.. -50hp down😱brentuning solved this issue with flash, go check that out.

Drop a gear or two man. Cmon.
Rod Jermy Or ride at higher rpm.just thinking out loud
Andy Gascon. Same thing isn’t it?
Phenomenal run through and review. Answered many questions and raised new concerns.
that's a lot of things to go through just to make a change man, i get your frustration bro. It's always good to be able to make a change quickly while riding.
Most people who buy this bike will never track it. They'll be down at Starbucks kicking tires, or cruising up and down their local strip mall area.
that will be me
You are 100% right.
Yup a guy at my job got one and boy does he think he's the shit!!!!!!
It’s made for the track not a grocery getter
Keep it in the power it’s a race bike it should never be below 8 grand on the track
Fk it bro, if she gotta go, she gotta go.
I don't see how he could concentrate talking while going around the track. He is a great rider.
A track time comparison between this and the old model would have been cool with your abilities.
Ticking noise, flat spot, delyed arrival, heavy vibration, dumb TPMS, user unfriendly display, some wheels with defects, etc.
plus the reason why they have a 3 year 36k mile warranty and others do not.
The ones who dont want there warranty deleted
@@644loic .The newer Newer BMWs like 2017s and up cannot be flashed back to stock by yourself.
@@644loic . Hes working on it
gonna ask for the dumbest request but can you please give drills or practices to improve cornering. i'm sure you are very familiar with the track that's why you decelerate and accelerate at the right time but your cornering was just perfect
Thanks for the review bro! I am going to keep my 2016 s1krr and wait until they fix all the problems with the new BMW. Also I want it in black lol
Have yall seen the grey it's coming in 😍 look it up real quick.
Where did you you see they grey one?
Reviewer of the year !! Cut the check 4 this guy bmw
Thank you, just confirmed my decision to wait for 2021!!
I love a good honest review. Only a handful of youtubers do this anymore. Look at afancyanimal youtube page and look at the speedbug page, they put in their 2 cents on this bike too.
🎯
Did you get the rev limiter taken off? It's capped until you bring it in for the first maintenance (600 miles), and they disable it.
you should change down when you come to a corner so that when you you come out you have all the power you need
Motonosity just posted about this exact issue and got a re-flashed ECU and problem is gone. Interesting how I just watched his video about it earlier tonight and now I found your video complaining if the same exact think. All beemer 1000RR's USA spec'd bikes I believe were shipped this way.
Thanks for the honest review m8, love to know how you get such good audio? I can’t even hear the bike thru my camera
Guessing wired mic inside helmet ?
Cali Moto TV what stereo mic do you use?
The emphasis behind the word "Nothing" sold me 😁. Great insight. Subscribed!
At first I thought this was from 650ib
Man I get nervous hahaha great riding man. And if that bike cant deliver and you're still doing work on the track then the sale is believable!!
Have mine on order. Was told today to expect maybe September or early October . Could you please explain the other issues you spoke of??
How does wheelie control work? Doesn't it stop you from doing wheelies by restricting the power? If so, wouldn't that be the reason why you are not getting power at lower RPMs?
My son has the same problem with his 2020 S 1000 M. He had it Brentuned, but it is never the same as his 2018
I congratulate you for not making do with it and being honest enough to say it's not good enough yet.
What is your opinion on the 2021?
Is the lap time quicker? Irrespective of engine performance? Sometimes its just a smoother power delivery. Having heaps of torque feel behind the seat does not mean one is going quicker could be the suspension is tuned better? If your lap times are slower than the previous model then that sucks... had my hopes up for this bike.
Is ur issue not due to it being a USA spec bike ? The Euro spec bike is a rocket 🚀
When this dude comes up behind me in the twisties on any bike - I'll be the dude that he says, like "get out of my way grandpa"... lol
and my 1999 R1100RT will still have more to give than I can ever use. You push it on the track, and I will continue to ride the highways and byways, and we will all get along just famous.
Coming out of a corner in 5th gear at 100 mph talking about how its pinned and you have no power?the bike should be in 2nd gear at that speed.its not the bike, its you 😂
Erik 1000 I know right?! The speeds he’s going he could’ve of basically left it in second for the whole lap...
I was thinking the same, but then again I don’t ride a liter bike so there’s that. Lol
im just sitting here thinking how many times he would have lapped me on my MT-09 lol
Depends on the rider
A sorted rg500 would undo that pile of electronics posthaste .
This guy is a Boss on this bike
Motorcycles are getting TOO COMPLICATED.
I guess I don’t understand. You are comparing your stock 2020 to your heavily modified 2015 that has countless hours of set up on it to get it just perfect for you. Set the 2015 back to stock, anything that had a tool put on it gets undone. Now which one is better out of the box so we can make an educated decision on which model to purchase?
on the track with mirrors? this is -for example- in Germany not aloud
That 2015 looks way better anyways
Interesting that there's more going on than just the flat spot from @7200-8200 which is supposedly related to the exhaust flapper valve (and related map). Since it looks like you've got the full Akrapovic system, I guess that's not the whole story.
Everything is working correctly and how it was intended to.
The problem is the requirements. BMW therefor had to tune it differently for the US than for the EU-markets.
It's that old school vtech boys. But boy when that vtech kicks in....... Zaazoooom!!!
Bmw have the vanos system.
So it has shift cam technology but still rides like an R1... lol.
@@CaliMotoTV That is sad and pathetic indeed! Like we really need to worry about these 50mpg+ motorcycles ruining the environment... right ...
Well that suck's...but at least you have the r9t cafe racer which is awesome 🔥
Great video. Ahh sucks about the power curve, but so fun to listen to this bikes whistle howl ... almost superchargerish.
Cali Moto TV yea hopefully, but like you, I’m
Still rocking my 15, with 31k miles, she ain’t slowing down anytime soon..
Cali Moto TV is that the sputtering? I got it one time during cold star and turned off. Restarted and it went away. I need a tune.
Oh yea, even shuts itself off sometimes.. they didn’t tune the bike from factory... got 1500hp. Cars that start better
Oh yea, even shuts itself off sometimes.. they didn’t tune the bike from factory... got 1500hp. Cars that start better
Shift cams are kind of a gimmick. Ideally you stay above 8,000 rpm the whole time. They change the lift but not the valve diameter so volumetric efficiency is not optimized.
Sport bikes are designed for sustained high rpm's, the oil passages, cooling, and engine internals are setup for high rpm, low load.
Sounds like when they do all it will need is a software update knowing BMW . Also for most they will never notice this and enjoy the bike.
So you sold it cause you can’t afford it...
He sold because it did not meet his Standards...did you not watch the video?
He's rich dude. He owns the track.
I loved my 2011.S1000rr is the best bike for the road and also, it’s so confortable
S1000rr always limit your throttle.. what dtc profile are you using? Does lean angle make any difference with that lag?
Cali Moto TV looking more info with this issue, i find there are really massive restrictions with throttle mapping going on.. -50hp down😱brentuning solved this issue with flash, go check that out.
I know you probably just ordered the V4R is all!!!! LOL!!! Gotcha.....
