I'm a puppy raiser at a service dog school and we teach all obedience but especially stay with the idea of the 3 D's: Distance, Duration, and Distraction. We start at a very low level with this but eventually the puppy is expected to repeat the command even when these variables are increased. We start out teaching stay in a similar way but eventually will recall a dog from that stay when teaching come. It's helpful to do long leash recalls where you can place your dog in a stay, walk to the end of the 30 foot leash, then recall the dog. On top of the stay command though, we work on a lot of passive staying and impulse control. Our dogs are expected to be in a heel position at all times so we will create distractions such as the treat on the floor and train our puppy to not react even if a command has not been given.
I love that you teach them to stay out of a place. I think my school recommends that place be taught after stay. My most recent puppy knew stay and place but for some reason I found it really difficult to get her to stay while in the context of a place (the end goal of place being to have the puppy run to the mat and stay automatically). This seems like a really smart way to teach this as you can work on both concepts at the same time. Next time I raise I'll try to teach it this way.

No grammar police here lol, I live in Plymouth UK and my use of the English language is very sloppy! I'm much more interested with the content of your videos which by the way is always great. Little tips like rewarding sitting where they are rather than after a re-call, makes such better sense and less confusion for the dog. What a lucky dog Missy is starting life with a clean sheet with such a brilliant trainer.

So glad you are able to convey your training psyche to the watchful world. This might sound crazy, but I find it both enjoyable and relaxing, watching a true and genuine animal lover demonstrate what is possible with the correct mind set.

Have 2 "stay" commands one where they are able to be remotely called off like a " wait" and a "stay" where you always return before releasing. Definitely could save your dogs life in a off leash scenario

Tom - this series is great - I love that you show both sides of the coin, what is easy and what is hard and how to use praise and markers to get behaviors you want and discourage behaviors you don’t. Great channel - keep up the good work! The idea of practicing. The stay in a very clear space using the raised bed is something I haven’t seen but makes perfect sense when you break it down.

Say i teach him only to sit/down and then releasing it with 'break' command so he know when he's in sit or down he doesnt move till hes released so we kinda dont need stay command or am i missing something? :). Or can stay come handy in other situations?

I would love some way to assess my dog's training, for example on a scale of 1-10, how good is the dog at staying? This helps me set better expectations for success, as well as measure my progress. Otherwise I'm not sure if I'm doing well or not, or how far to go. Ditto, "come," and "leave it." Perhaps I ask too much too early, for example.

Hi! First of all, I love your content! I follow you on Instagram as well. Some Dog trainers say not to use the "stay" command. They say that if you place a dog in a sit, or a lie down, they should stay there until you release them without having to give the "stay" command. What are your thoughts on it? I see in this video you are teaching the stay command..

Each time anyone tries to pet my puppy…he follows their hands and bites.
Who likes to be bite…so they quit petting.
He is a 5 month old Pittie.
I haven’t seen a video on this exactly…a lot of videos are about the puppy biting stages which we have corrected.
Again, if you go towards his head to pet…he follows your hand and bites.

Your dog is in control. You are not communicating correctly. I move into the dog that does not do what is needed. I use full frontal body movements, confidently and calmly. I wont tolerate no and the dogs know it . The dog pisses on places that they claim. They dont care what it is. For them is their turf. TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE DOG, YOU ARE FOLLOWING NOT LEADING. Please give your dog a break its exhausted trying to understand you. Dogs make very little dirrect eye contact with other dogs however they are very physical in communicating their message. Have you ever seen a dog staring into the eyes of another dogs? You wont. Unless one wants the other dead or gone. Now imagine how crazy this makes all dogs feel?
I board dogs in cageless environment and I see this behaviour all the time. Too often I have found that the 'prettier' the dog the more neurotic the behaviour. Huskies are gorgeous. I believe its inappropriate eye contact is part of the problem. Watch sincere trainers working dogs, see when they actually make eye contact... its a process and takes time to communicate correctly. The best to you and your dog.

The stay command is very important one. It allows you to take your dog with you and leave them at places where they can not enter. Make sure before you do this, to practice the stay with you going out of sight. Build this slowly up a couple seconds a the time. Better to do it slowly and get succes then rush it and have them fail. Choose also your first practice test wisely where you can keep an eye on your dog like a shop with large Windows. But please do not leave your dog in the sun while you are shopping make sure they are comfortable and have Some water with you.

When puppy bite/nips,dont pull away, rather keep hand steady and tell puppy, 'Softly'. I know it might hurt but puppies need to experiment with different levels of bite pressure. You need to teach them what pressure if any is appropriate. They learn fast. Be patient, persistent and gentle. Rather you dealing with a few skin punctures than your child. Reason you hold your position is that you are in control not puppy. No puppy will bite/nip grown dog and get away with it. Teach puppy and child how to play together...best to you from Cape Town.

Im trying to learn my dog to stay, but she’s pretty submissive by nature, so when she comes to me and I move towards her to get her back in sit she just lay down on her back, what can I do? It’s difficult to get her back in a sit because she gets confused and frustrated and just lays down again..She is a four year old husky/malamute mix, and submissive/careful by nature, so I can’t wait or train away that submissive behavior.
