You know what I love about Tom as opposed to other online trainers? He shows us his mistakes. When I first started training my dog, it was hard for me to try things because I felt like if I wasn't perfect, it would screw things up. Seeing Tom make a mistake and wave it off after acknowledging it helped me realize you don't have to be perfect, you just have to acknowledge the mistake and try better next time. I think too many online trainers edit their mistakes out and with Tom, you get Tom and that's why he's a good teacher...he's relatable.
Honestly pretty eye-opening. I think many people don’t realise what it takes to train a dog. Knowing the command isn’t enough, they gotta be able to do it in any situation, and that takes a lot of work. Could explain why some dogs aren’t so well behaved outside compared to when at home; the owner just didn’t teach the dog to do a command in any given situation. So happy to have found your channel 🙌🏻
My Rotty and I have gone from lunging, jumping, and nipping. To a tight heel off leash, auto sit, and of course "place". You always up the game Thomas. Thank you!
I really enjoy your teaching videos. Just got a 2 yr. Old Lab mix. 60 % 25% German Shepherd. So I am following your videos. They make me feel comfortable about how and why they need this training.
As a dog trainer as well I love the info you give to the audience: clients, pet owners etc. I’ve only been on my own for 2yrs and having someone like your business give info out like this it’s kinda of a refresher of what I was taught in DTSchool. Wish more trainers would be as open minded and take something from each other as we’re all still learning something. Shoot I send your podcast to my clients because I’m not the “only way or the highway”. Great job, love seeing y’all grow👍🏼
I like this. I use the "touch" command word when we're out and he's on the long (30ft) lead and at the max. I call his name and say "touch" and he comes running to touch my fingers for a food reward. Then I let him go back to what he was doing because I don't want him to associate that command with having to leave from his "play" time. Sometimes we'll leave and sometimes we'll stay.
I love the bed idea, she often doesn't use it for her bed, but she uses it when she is upset. If she starts barking, on our deck for a dog going by, I let her in and she goes straight to her bed for a couple of minutes. We originally said bed and now she goes on her own when needed. I love learning new ways over and over, I learned I guess the old ways 45 yrs. ago and they did work for most of our dogs or friends dogs but learning about behaviours in training, is quite interesting and its easy to understand, when relating to people. Thank you once again.
Such a fabulous breakdown. To also see it play out right and wrong, hit or miss, this was great! Puppy raisers use this command for guides in training. Thank you!
Yes! I totally needed this video, we started the place command yesterday. This is what I needed to paint the accurate picture for my dog Kitty, thank you!!!
I love all your videos, makes me feel like I can train my dog easily because the way you describe the training process is so easy to follow! Thanks so much :)
Yes this the first thing you teach you i just want to say thank for sharing the knowledge about dog and other things.dog are just little people they have a heart and soul and we just got show rhem just like teching martial arts for I love talking you do a good job keep up the good work and hope we can talk. More knowledge the better go have a great day
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Our puppy is 1-1/2 years old and needs retraining. We have been through a lot of changes this past year and he has a bit of anxiety. I have been getting very frustrated. This video has given me some hope. Need to start from the beginning. Thank you 😊
I find teaching the send away helps big time. I move back whilst the dog is sent away hence creating more distance. I also so use round rubber mats (used for soccer) and send the dog left touch, right touch , so the dog goes from one to the other. My dog loves being up high, hence the tree climbing : ) She will go to any flat mat or raised surface. Lovely dog Tom . Thanks and great work, well explained : )
Loved this. Great use of example and I appreciate that you left in when you didn't mark at the right time. Great teaching moment. I'm going to go work with my dog on this now. Thanks so much
I started teaching my Shepherd the touch and place command when she was quite young as part of our daily walks. I used what ever was on our route, park bench picnic table logs, big rocks etc....It made her focus on me more by making like a game. She is not realy motivated by food but it's all about the toy Thx Tom for all the great vids I've learned so much from them 👍😎🤘
Love your videos. Honestly so helpful. Love how you break it down into simple steps and show why things dont always work perfectly. Would love to see more work with multiple dogs at the same time.
Man your absolutely the best I've seen. This video is gonna help me so much. My 5mth old rott boomer has the place command down but distance has been my and his issue. After you realized the forward hand motion was leading him to believe you tossed the reward a light went off for me . I'm pretty confident now that I can complete the place command with him successfully from a distance Thanks so much for you content and hard work. I'm a fan .
Great video and thanks so much for sharing. I'm learning so many things from your videos and it has been enjoyable teaching my dog new things which has created a great bond between us. Cheers from Melbourne Australia
this video was great! Currently working on "touch" and "leave it"with my 13 1/2 week old doberman. And this definitely helps with teaching from a distance! Thank you, thank you Tom!
Great advice had the same problem with my mini pit getting confused looking for the food. I volunteer at the local animal shelter working with dogs that have been deemed bad dogs mostly fear aggression people have just treated them wrong thanks to so many of your videos it is help tremendously keep up the good work.
Awesome vid Tom!! Super detailed and very helpful! This is actually what I’m working on right now with my pups. Your channel is so great! Keep it up! 👍🏻
My three Gsd 🐕🐕🐕 don’t know the place command until now. We are working on the Sitz and Platz from distance every day. Just to be sure, they do it whenever I ask them to (ok, it’s not a matter of asking). The “place command” is on the schedule the day they don’t stop barking at the door. Thanks for your advice 👏🏻
I had the same for weeks. I finally got success when doing some commands with the prong collar and then switching up to treats in the same session. My dog and I now practice doing both methods. Hope this might help! You'll get it!
Super helpful! I use the "place" command and he is finally after about two weeks really getting it. I have gradually been stretching the distance but I wasn't sure what the next step was. I'll get some more elevated locations and put them close by. Thanks so much!
I use this now when I come home in the car as I have to open the gates to get in and it’s off dangerous main road! I make Luna go to her bed on the balcony until I back car into carport and close gates then break and loads of reward and play ball. Fantastic to teach your dog this for many reasons it’s also taught her impulse control as she is very excited I’m home I only have to point and say it once. Thanks 😊 .
How do you teach them to stay on the bed until you give the break command? Once my dog touches and gets rewarded he’s immediately off the bed. Thank you! Love your videos!
I love this-my 3 yr old golden retriever gets over excited when we come home or people come over n would love to teach this-any advice for excited dogs when people enter home? Thanks for your great videos 👍🏼
Hey Tom, thank you...my question is...can you do place on a blanket or pad? Why does the dog need to be off the ground? I've done the raised bed but I wonder if my clients can use a pad? Thank you , I appreciate all your info.😊🐕🐾Dawn
I'm not Tom, but I've unexpectedly taught my dog to touch on the corner of a rug in my living room next to the back door, by having him sit before I open the door (a high reward). I think as long as the dog can understand something is different about the spot it can work. The bigger the difference, the easier it will be. My dog now also touches on his fluffy dog bed. At the front door I make him sit before opening it to go for walk, and he tries to sit on the corner of the tiny rug, and then I can't open the door! :) I think I need to work on the "proofing" Tom mentioned, because right now sit and touch are kind of mixed together in his mind.
Great video Tom! I'm about to get a puppy soon as I'm now retired, have the time to care for a dog. These videos teaching the basics are brilliant, I will be able to start correct right from the beginning. Have really got into watching your videos, you have helped a lot of dogs by re-training the owners! I don't like the thought of the e collars, hopefully can avoid by doing the right things from the off! Thank you for all you are doing, Mrs Lee Castle from London
Would you say it's best to teach the dog to stay on their "place" through body language? i.e. standing in front of the dog and basically blocking him until I give my release word? Or start by using the "stay" command in addition to "place" or "touch?"
My dog knows bed inside and outside but I prefer the place command should I rename the bed command to place or make place it's own separate command (touch is our word for 2 paws on bowl)
I am just starting training with my new rescue shepherd. She, we, don't know anything. I am struggling with walking on leash, when we are turning. Especially to the left. I cannot get a stay from her beyond two, maybe three feet. I don't have one of those elevated beds, can I use a towel for a visual place to go to? Or does it need to be elevated. Thx.
QUESTION I have a female GSD. Bec of her history she has become very instinctual on people. When do I press for obedience & when to trust her? Or should I always press for obedience. Example she has that relationship with my husband. When he is in pain or having anxiety she lunges at all except a few people. Is that her protecting or her insecurity & she is reacting bec she doesn't have faith in his handing? She doesn't do that often with me.
Absolutely brilliant. Tom's training video's with Hawk (focused heal training and place, etc) really resonate with me, as I am learning to improve my body language and how to break things down for my dog. I am searching for more of his videos in this style. Someone's comment in a different video said that Tom has found his calling. It made me think of a really neat audio book called "Mastery" by Robert Greene. Tom: If you are reading my comment, check out this book. You might like it.
Nice work! Love when clients are willing to learn this. Difficulty is getting the humans to be consistent. Is there something you use to get the humans to do their part?
@@dawnsaffel2620 Most of mine follow through but every so often they don't. I always say, training dogs is easy. Training people is where the real work is.
Interesting video on the place or touch command. I didn't realize that such a small change in distance would make such a difference in the dog knowing what to do. If you go to a separate room how do you direct the dog to the right location to place?
Hi Tom, did I miss you saying how long this takes on a dog that has never done it. I am working with a owner and her dog right now with the very basics and staying close to the "Place". I know I should see him start in that direction without me moving. But, I am not with the owner and dog daily. Just wondering, also this dog is a 11 yr old schnauzer. Thanks Tom
My 3 month old poodle figured out "place" recently but won't do it unless I point at the cooling dog bed. I'm wondering if the gesture command is a good thing or a bad thing.
Dude this is awesome! I’ve been trying to teach my German place and didn’t understand why he wouldn’t do it when we were far away. I notice you’re only using elevated beds, does that lead to more success or does a flat door mat work the same?
I've been working on this with my 3, they all know crate well and will go to their own crates but getting them to go to their "own" bed place is proving a little more difficult.

I like this guys training videos. Its not like he makes videos of an already trained dog.
I love watching hours of dog training videos... and practicing a few minutes with my own dog ;)
Ooouch 🦮🥺
Dog usually gets it quick, it's us owners that need all the instruction (or to be taught how to think like a dog).
My Rotty and I have gone from lunging, jumping, and nipping. To a tight heel off leash, auto sit, and of course "place". You always up the game Thomas. Thank you!
It was good for me to see a breed as smart as a Mal still have to work through learning from a distance. Good video!
This is such a great command for any dog. I didn’t realize how easy it was to teach. Great video as always! 🙌🏻
Rae S thank you!!!
Rae S hi! How long did it take to teach your dog?
Brooklyn Sotelo my dog started getting it after a few times but it took a couple days for him to completely get it. I still practice with him often.

Watching this video again while our 5 1/2 month old Aussie was chilling after our walk. Heard Tom say touch and she moved over to her raised bed😂
This was awesome Tom,sort of switched the light bulb on,in respect to the complexities a dog goes through to understand what is expected of them.
