“It’s your job to make him right.” Amazing, yet simple advice. I’ve been in the position where I’ve felt frustrated by my dog while training... but when this happens, it’s always clear that he’s also getting frustrated and is trying his best to please me. Thank you for the reminder. Also really good advice about “going back in” to give the reward! Thank you!!
I love these videos, absolutely my favorite trainers on TH-cam. My 5 month old puppy is doing so well and I'm feeling so much less frustration. Everyone else in the house is getting it too!
I am so thankful for the McCann methods. My 10 month old lab has been super rowdy and obnoxious especially with my kids ever since we brought him home around 10 weeks old. Due to some unforeseen family issues we are getting a very late start on even the basic commands. I have learned so much in the last month of watching these McCann training videos. I wish I knew sooner how quickly dogs respond to training. In less than a week of better management (giving him way less freedom in our home) and with just a few minutes of training each day he has already learned sit, down, stay and is sleeping quietly in his crate. He also hasn't jumped on my kids in several days and just today he actually listened to me when I told him to 'stay' at the top of the basement stairs. I am blown away by how quickly he is learning! I have signed up for the Life Skills course and will be starting lesson 1 this week. Thank you so much!!
One of my favorite McCann Dog videos I've seen so far! So helpful to see the dogs make mistakes and how to train something from scratch with an untrained dog.
@@McCannDogs It's all so overwhelming being 60 and getting a puppy -- but we can do these things in short bursts and this was the perfect reminder. I had my husband watch as well and it helped us realize we were making it all too big like we had to be able to devote hours a day. Short sessions! Whew!
@@SharrellKline Oh, Sharrell!! If you should happen to read this would love to know how you did and what kind of puppy you got!! 59 and just got an aussie pup. Overwhelmed to say the least and sad to say big part of that feeling is negativity from others saying aussies too high energy and too much work! ☹ Not denying either of these things but have never shied away from a challenge and as my son says who gave me this wonderful puppy, "What are you doing anyway???" 🤪🤯🤪
@@rosemarygavin3121 We have a Double Doodle (mother Goldendoodle/Father Labradoodle who was selected from the breeder's second litter of 10 for the traits I needed in a service dog) who is now15 months old and 75 pounds. We've gone through advanced obedience but got a lot more from the McCann's. We did my service dog training and as the youngest in the class he still passed with flying colors. As I write this I am sitting on my couch in Tirana, Albania where we are spending the next year to launch our roving retirement throughout Europe. We left Portland, Oregon early this past Sunday morning, flew through Seattle, JFK, Rome (15 hour layover and not allowed to leave the terminal. Our pup never did pee or poo on the floor growing up and they had no pet relief areas inside so he wouldn't consider going on the wee pads and held it for over 24 hours), and into Tirana 40 hours later. For each of the four legs he was perfect on the floor in the cabin. The last 90-minute flight they gave our bulkhead seats with extra legroom to a family with a baby and put us in this little commuter plane in two seats together and my husband and I literally had to rest our feet on Sebastian. He still was a rock star. He did hit a wall when we had to deplane in Tirana where it's such a small airport that we had to go down the metal steps to the tarmac. If I didn't have his service harness to help him down the stairs by literally holding him all the way down he'd have not managed. He was very scared on the shuttle bus when everyone crammed on around him and they were pushing and shoving him all over. But all the while he never made a peep. The crew and passengers on each leg were so incredulous of his behavior they all kept coming by to take pictures. So I've given you a very long winded response but wanted to make the point that even if you have a high energy dog and it takes a big investment, that work pays off by gifting you with a dog that is so impressive in public that even in the park people come up to take photos.
This video is so helpful. My trainer in puppy class went way too fast with the stay command and my puppy just never got it. I finally realize from this video that he never really understood what I wanted him to do
Mac is so smart and so handsome!! It's neat to see an older working dog learn obedience skills. These are things I'll work with my puppy on! Great video!
I have just started to work on stay with my 3 month old GSD. This has shown me that I've been making a lot of mistakes that I need to correct. Thanks for another great video!
I LOVE these videos! All of the exercises are explained slowly and thoroughly so I can do them myself at home. I appreciate this resource so, so much! I've already taught my mom's pup "YES," her name, Sit, and Down - with the help of McCann's videos. She's doing great at focusing on me, too! It's incredible how quickly they learn and how badly they want to please! Thank you thank you!
Nice basic mechanics info that is so important. Bringing the reward up to your face before giving it to him does two things: Looking at your eyes helps build your trust-filled relationhip with him. It also teaches that you are the source of his commands & reinforcements, so he'd better pay attention. Thanks!
I just watched this video all the way through. My family has a little Maltese puppy called Benedict Waggo (Benny for short) and he is the sweetest little thing, but we've neglected his training a little. He's not big enough to cause any injury to us, and I'm sure he wouldn't try to intentionally, but I still feel a bit guilty about his manners sometimes. Recently I've been watching videos and taking notes, and I think this one might be helpful. I will have to write down the tips or whatever you call them!
I LOVE this video! I just brought home a 6 month mini sheltie with no house or crate training, so we're starting with a schedule and basics, these 5 minutes/5 feet videos really help living in a small apartment and having a chronic pain condition. She passed the SD temperament test so the goal will be CGC and SD public access. :-)
Have to say you are a god send to pet dog owners trying to it right I took my 17 month GSD to her intermediate thinking she would shine as I trained though play and treats she hated it a hit and a miss whether she would work for me my dog trainer said she had no respect for me I was so upset I now take her to different places and do her commands and stay I can see she is very nervous at first always scanning but with a bit of patience she gets there at home she is a perfect companion thanks for your free time and lessons sorry it's so long
McCann Dog Training videos, along with some of Ian Dunbars videos, in my opinion are the best/most informative of thier kind on youtube. I'm in the process of training my little poodle puppy these videos help so much! Much appreciated thanks! :)
Thank you for all the great video training! Dog training lessons are expensive, this is such a great opportunity. I have a question: what food or snacks do you use for the food rewards for the pups while training?
Thank you, Heidi! So glad you are finding our videos helpful! The reward you use is dependent on your dog. If you’re finding that your having trouble getting your dog’s focus, switching to a higher value reward that your dog absolutely LOVES is helpful. But that is something that you’ll have to figure out for your dog. We have a homemade treat recipe that dog’s seem to really love and you can make it yourself. Here’s a link: th-cam.com/video/5rVgHLnt4W0/w-d-xo.html Happy Training! ~Ken
My dog can't wear a collar so iv had trouble getting her to respond w pressure training in a harness. Could u do a video on dog training tiny dogs in harnesses?
I love these training videos and on semi related note can we see more of the sheep herding videos? Or have y’all taken the winter off because you’re in Canada? I know down here in GA we take the summer off of herding class!
HAHA!! Skye is almost as tall as you when sitting, such a cool dog. My dog pushes his way into the bathroom when I'm using it, can't image Skye trying to push his way in :)
My Sprocker puppy usually barks at the command stay, but just done this with him and he was excellent, never seen him so focused on me like that before. When would be a good time to take away the reward?
What about a 150lb 1.5 - 2yr old great dane rescue that you can't easily maneuver back into place? She came to us knowing sit, lay down, and shake, but only for a brief second. Won't stay in position. She's also animal reactive and reactive to tones in voice when my teenager gets huffy and puffy with me. I need her to stay when asked and also to be able to call her off when she's going after my son when he's copped an attitude about something. It'd also be great to not have to keep her separated from the 5 other animals in my household, bc it makes it hard to function here!
Great video, but I am having difficulty with my older collie now that we have a new puppy. She will stay well until released, even when I throw her frisbee. But when I want her to settle while I work with the puppy she will stay there only until I say yes, okay etc to the puppy then she thinks she is releasing and tries to gate crash the puppies training sessions.
I love your videos, so glad I found you! My puppy is really tiny and I use really small bits for treats but I'm concerned he's getting too many treats. Mac here is awesome and getting lots of treats but he's much bigger so in wonder if you treat differently for different size dogs? I use teeny bits of deli chicken meat. Is this good?
it would be very helpful for me to know theageof the dog in every training video i have a 9 week old english lab and he does not have the attention span to do this yet
What kind of treats are you using? He seems to really like them. I have a 3month old Aussiedoodle that I'm trying to train, he just is not interested in treats. I've tried several and can't seem to keep his attention with them for long. Was thinking of cheese or hotdogs. Is that ok?
What if your dog knows the sit command, but knows it means to sit and face you, not to sit at your side? Is there a different command we should use to have him sit at our side?
My puppy only listens when I have food. If he’s going for my slippers I try giving him an appropriate toy but he continues to jump on me and go for the slipper. He will do sit, leave it when I have a treat but will keep going back to the slipper. When I try to go back to treats to get him to stop he will lose focus and move away. Any ideas? We just can’t walk without him grabbing our shoes or pants.
Hi there, Eva PM! In this case, Instructor Steve was using treats, but it’s all about your dog. If your dog loves to work for their food, then that’s a great option. Focus on motivation and occasionally switching the reward up, and you’ll find that your dog stays interested in the rewards! Happy Training ~Ken
It is not easy for me to train stay command to my German Shepherd puppy because she just want to be with me whenever I go for a short distance, she follows me like she wants to stick to me!!!

Love that you show us with an untrained dog...it encourages us 👍
This comment🙌🏼
Yes definitely. Very hard when the trainers are showing us with trained dogs 😊
Thank you for using a dog that isn't already trained. My GSD has come a long ways using your methods

Very helpful video. I like how you used a dog that wasn’t trained and showed the corrections that had to be made as you went along.

Just watched this! Love you used an untrained collie !

What if your dog knows the sit command, but knows it means to sit and face you, not to sit at your side? Is there a different command we should use to have him sit at our side?
What Dog Breed is that? Thank you
Okay. I need help. I've taught my older dog to sit, but now he just sits before I tell him to sit or see the treat. Is that bad? Or is that good?
My puppy only listens when I have food. If he’s going for my slippers I try giving him an appropriate toy but he continues to jump on me and go for the slipper. What do you do if your Great Dane (11 months) doesn't stay for longer than one treat?
Hello,
I have a dachshund that gets upset if you touch her bottom area. how would you go about having her sit correctly by your side?
Melissa hold a treat just above his head, that will make him look up and Most dogs will transition to a sit from there.
Are you giving him treats or is it his food? You’re all awesome, thank you for taking the time to teach us!

Dawg atp I’m gonna be watching all the stay videos and none will work
PIVOT!
Who said you can’t teach an old dog
New tricks?!
So I see you’re doing this training inside...better than going outside?
A 9yr old border collie that has been a working dog who herds animals around . . . but DOESN'T yet know how to stop and stay in one place for a bit?? I guess I'm confused. This is like bringing a grad school physics major to a 7th grade science class to learn the "basics". Interesting situation.
My 8 month old pup doesn't give 2 dookies for treats! 😢
Why does he push the dogs butt down isntead of asking the dog to sit?
I think he does that cause he doesn't know how to sit
please don't use the word OK for a break command. We use the word OK far too often in our conversations, Use a word that we don't use often such as break
Should stop looking into his eyes and look at a spot on wall
Oh, no. I'm sorry, Steve, you have two shadows.
Hey, who turned out the lights?
From what I am seeing he can't sit right because he keeps sliding on that mat. He needs something he can grip to!
Crying because my dog who is almost 3 years now just won't sit. He'll stand up, lay down, but won't sit and even when he does he gets right back up before I can properly reward him for it, or starts to lay down
A 15 minute video talking about a 5 minute plan. Why do people make such long videos? Brevity people! LOL
