Review: 2020 Mazda CX-30 AWD - Is it the best small crossover?

  • I review the all-new 2020 Mazda CX-30 in its Premium AWD trim. With a best-in-class interior, beautiful looks and best-in-class power, the CX-30 is easily the nicest subcompact crossover in the segment. Despite this, it's priced very competitively with the rest, even undercutting some. Adding this value to the mix, the CX-30 is easy to recommend as long as you don't mind the interior nuances like not having a touchscreen infotainment system. Would this be your pick in the subcompact crossover class? Thanks to Mazda for this opportunity to review the CX-30!

    PHENOMENAL CAR. I bought the 2021 cx30 and do not regret it one bit !! Beautiful car inside and out and so fun to drive. Responsive, nimble, easy to drive . Premium interior and high quality feel and look. Mazda paid close attention to every detail .

    *S O L D* ‼️ I bought mine yesterday ... picking up tomorrow.
    Regarding touchscreens ... I have an iPad ... it gets so grubby / fingerprinty ... Among many reasons, the fact that the CX-30’s infotainment centre isn’t touchscreen and relies on dials / buttons sold me ... screw the b.s. about touchscreens ... not in a car while driving.

    I drove a CX-30 yesterday that had a heated steering wheel, and to my surprise, a 360 view camera system. It's strange that you don't have that on the US cars. It's usually the other way around. I live in Norway for anyone wondering.

      Thanks for the suggestion! That's an interesting idea. Usually splitting things up adds an extra step of going from one video to the next, which means there will be some drop-off. But it also would boost overall view count and make the individual videos a lot shorter and easier to watch all the way through. I'll bring it up in my next live q&a and see what people think. I love the look of this new CX-30, I just wish the plastic cladding was scaled back just a little. And like some will say, it would be cool to see the 2.5T in here at some point. Id like to see that powerplant tuned more for horsepower and less on the torque. Overall it seems as if this should have been the original CX-3. That one is just so small and doesnt make sense.

      DNeese The Runner modern steel used in car doesn’t rust, hence the warranty just in case. Mazda can’t seem to shake this old reputation. I don’t work for Mazda. But I always jump in to defend them, my parents bought their first Mazda in July 1989 and it was a wonderful manual transmission 626 LX or Ex. It was really really nice and Japan was putting out great cars including the very successful Honda Accord that my parents cross shopped. That car was passed down to my crazy little brother then from him to my crazy cousin Heather who delivered pizzas out of it for 5 years! It didn’t die. She crashed it during an icy winter in 2007. Oil changes were constant but I know my brother and then Heather drove the cat piss out of it! Meanwhile the parents bought a Mazda MPV in 95, an MX-6 in 99 and have bought 3-4 pre-owned Miatas. Now they have a CX-9 and a Mazda 3 and a Mazda 6, all less than 5 years old and going into their retirement. Meanwhile I was buying various Mazda’s and am currently into a new leased CX-5 and I own a 2016 Mazda 3. All that said, my siblings and other relatives own Mazda’s. We all like them. We keep going back to Mazda as they have been better than some of our Honda’s and certainly Nissans. I can buy about anything I desire under $55-$60k and I love the Mazda’s. Still fun, still quality and better all the time, efficient and affordable! No CVT! No rust! No paint problems! Just normal Maintenance. Mazda seems to not have a wide mass market appeal. There are reasons for that’d course like a small dealer network etc. but poor reliability and lack of fun-factor aren’t among them. I love to go take new Mazda’s on test drives. There are no perfect cars and especially at the price range of $20k for a new base model Mazda 3- but they manage to do an excellent job imo and in the comment section of any Mazda comment section you find on TH-cam!! I hope you give them a chance if it meets your needs! Take care of the Mazda and the Mazda will take care of you! Let me know what you think! Good day.

    Love Mazda, but this is why their sales don't do as well as main competitors such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan. They tend to choose what's best for customers instead of catering to their customers. Example is customization for the guage cluster and even infotainment system. They have the best looking cars bar none, same goes for interior.

    I drove a 2023 last week and I got that feeling that there might be an engine buried under that crappy automatic. The automatic makes this a total dog. @@2004cyrus Well, for the record I usually restrict my strong negative comments to the bloated CX-9. In fact, I have a long positive history owning Mazda vehicles. It's true I once had a Mazda 626 whose engine literally exploded 7000 miles after I purchased it new but after the engine was replaced under warranty I drove it another 100K miles without a problem. And I owned an AWD Mazda MPV that probably saved my life when I was able to get it out of a ditch in deep snow on an isolated logging road in the Cascade mountains. I even owned an RX8 with a rotary engine that had to be towed to the dealer each time it flooded when the engine was turned off before it warmed up to have its spark plug replaced. But having learned my lesson I always made sure not to let that happen and driving it was a hoot and a half. I've never owned a Miata but if Mazda built only that vehicle it would justify the existence of the company.
      As for the CX-30 I just wonder about the strategy of offering vehicles that seem to overlap one another in terms of market categories. There's the Mazda3 hatchback, CX-3, CX-30, and CX-5. All of the CX's in the sub-compact to compact crossover categories. The CX-30 is among the largest of the sub-compact category and the CX-5 the smallest in the compact category. The CX-3 and the CX-30 seem to overlap in term of both size and price. And other than ground clearance the Mazda3 hatch seems to offer what the smaller crossovers offer. Perhaps Mazda knows what they're doing but it looks to me as if they have a set of vehicles that are likely to cannibalize the sales of one another.

    • @2004cyrus
      @2004cyrus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Hendricks I think all of the manufacturers are experimenting with the lately smoking hot crossover market. They’ll see what overlaps and cannibalizes the other as you say and focus on what the consumer is buying in the next 3-5 years and adjust. These companies are slowly become more nimble with their global platforms. That’s the beauty of capitalism- companies of all kinds adjust their product lines to meet consumer demands. Nothing new there. And you are hard on the CX-9 for some reason. You say it’s bloated, have you been in any domestic suvs and crossovers in the last 10 years, those are the definition of bloated. To each his own but I’ve driven many of them since the MPV and I happen to think they are great. But I do love Mazda for the price paid. Do you not find the Toyota Sequoyah or Honda Pilot to be bloated ?

    Really dislike touchscreens in cars.. Touchscreens are great for devices like phones and tablets that you hold up to your face and are looking at so you're always looking where you're touching. On a car it's bad design, wrong interface for the situation, no tactile feedback that you've it the right button, so you have to look (eyes off the road). It's just trendy because hey, iPads.
