*Fun Fact:* Initially in the writers' room, it was planned in storyboarding that Stan would intentionally sacrifice Waddles as bait to the pterodactyl. I think Alex and team made the right choice to change that, as it does make Stan pretty unsympathetic (this was their specific reason for redoing the script)

I don't buy that. I mean, I buy that that's why they scrapped the idea, but the reasoning is dumb. Stan has done far worse in the show than sacrifice a pig to save himself from a pterodactyl. He's a terrible human being, but it hasn't stopped me from sympathizing with him.

Fun fact: Instead of Land Before Swine, series creator Alex Hirsch planned do an episode where Stan takes Dipper and Mabel on a camping trip. While out in the woods they’d encounter a headless horseman monster who hunts humans and has a wall in his home that’s lined with head trophies.
Unsurprisingly, Disney thought it was too scary and the crew had to scrap it.
Alex thought it was for the best as the episode would've been a generic technology vs. the outdoors story. Fortunately, the headhunter concept found it’s way into the comic Face It from the four-issue series Gravity Falls: Lost Legends.
Thing had changed since those times. I mean, now we had an history with a serial killer that wear his victims skins on the Halloween episode on Amphibia

You’re definitely more into the codes than some other people (Blind Wave was also heavily into the codes as well), but it’s a neat detail that you caught the tattoo despite it only being there very slightly
As a GF superfan from back in the day, I can save you some time, and let you know that the tattoo shown in Stan's telling of events, when decoded, spells out "lies".
Blind wave took the code solving to a whole new level. I didn't even know the keys were there.

Ngl I'm looking forward to seeing her reaction to what's behind Stan's vending machine and her theories on what it all means. It's no surprise to us repeat viewers but that episode and the first half of season 2 spawned over an entire year's worth of collective fan theorizing that was really fun to see developing alongside the revelations, twists, and red herrings in the episodes as they were released.

I love the fact that of the (human) characters featuring this episode, 3 out of 5 of them are voiced by the same person.
The reason why "pterodactyl" starts with a p is because the name comes from the Ancient Greek word "pteron", which means "wing" (also "dactulos", which means "finger", so the whole name means "winged fingers").
It's also one of the root words for helicopter ("helix", meaning "spiral", plus "pteron").

I showed my buddy a clip of this episode before he ever saw the show. It was Stan's "This is the dumbest thing I've ever done" moment followed by jumping on the Pterodactyl. He instantly got hooked, started binging watching, and became a bigger fan than me.
I love the little detail of Soos pronouncing the P in Pterodactyl since he's latino😂😂

The writing in this show is so good, going back to these early episodes and seeing all the foreshadowing (and growth) really highlights that.

You may have already heard this but this episode has a special commentary with Alex Hirsch in character as Grunkle Stan. That also happens to have implied connection to the Owl house.
Grunkle Stan mentions "that one character" in that commentary though so it's probably best if Elijah waits till after the halfway point of S2 to listen to it.

Been enjoying the series. It's nice to relive someone watching Gravity Falls for the first time and experience all the mysteries. Just wanted to let you know that in-between season 1 and 2, Disney released a bunch of short episodes to help with the long hiatus. I recommend watching them once season 1 iins done. They are on disney+ under Gravity Falls shorts
Dinosaurs became our current birds, while Pterosaurs became our lizards. So, in a way, Stan was right about the pterodactyl(which looks more like a pteranodon, since pterodactyls were way smaller).
Pterosaurs didn't become lizards; they just died out. Lizards are a different branch of the Reptile family tree, more closely related to tuataras than to any sort of archosauromorphs.

Not saying they are 100% right(it was just a quit search), but they do exist.

In the GF boxset, each episode has directors commentary, a couple have different people, and Ep 28 has it from Grunkle Stan himself. But it's best you watch it after the S2 finale.

Stan does actually have a tattoo on his back, but it’s different to the one shown in the fantasy sequence. In reality it’s some kind of symbol while in the fantasy sequence it’s a code that can be deciphered. There’s also a online short dedicated to it. I recommend checking out the Gravity Falls shorts, as their a fun watch and have their own things to decipher in them.
I’m excited to see you tackle the last few episodes of the season. They got the fandom excited for the next season for a reason.

Throughout its run, one of The Owl House 's most prominent fan theories has been that the character of Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick) was once briefly married to Stan Pines (Alex Hirsch), aka Grunkle Stan, from Gravity Falls -- which itself ran for two seasons on Disney Channel and Disney XD from 2012 to 2016
Stan does have a tattoo on his back! You can see it in some shots of other episodes when he’s wearing just his tank top :)

To answer your question, the p is in the word pterodactyl because the word comes from Greek. "Ptero" means winged and "dactylus" means finger (named so because pterodactyl wings are made of skin stretched between their feat and an elongated pinky finger.)

I hadn't watched this show in about a month and while waiting for my nephew this afternoon watched this episode. Then, I see your reaction to the episode literally 3 hours later. This is the first time something like this has happened to where one of my all-time favorite streamers premiered something that I literally just experienced was awesome. Usually, with editing and everything it is at best a couple of days so this rocked. Sorry for the dissertation but you made my week. Thank you!

Before starting season 2 you should watch the gravity falls shorts. They are canon and were released between the two seasons. They are not needed for the story to make sense, but there are some clues to the overarching story and they are really fun too
Elijah, you should watch the GF shorts, like "Mabels guide to", " Mabels scrapbook" and "dippers guide to the unexplained". In one of them, they mention the tattoo

So to answer your question, Pterodactylus was named by Italian scientist Cosimo Alessandro Collini. Species are usually named by combining prefix and suffix words derived from Greek and Latin. As it was the first Pterosaur discovered and no other fossil flying vertebrates had been uncovered at the time, Pterodactylus' name was derived from the greek prefix 'pteros' and suffix 'dactyl', meaning 'winged finger'. Pteros is the latinized version of the same greek word, ptéryga (πτέρυγα).
Another thing to note is that while 'Pterodactyl' is a catch-all term in pop-culture and media for any Pterosaur, Pterodactylus and what most people think is Pterodactyl are two different animals. Pterodactylus is a European Jurassic Pterosaur about as big as a pigeon with teeth. The animal most people think is Pterodactyl, the large pterosaur with a long bony crest, is actually a North American Cretaceous Pterosaur named Pteranodon, which means 'toothless wing' after how the animal had a toothless beak. While many pterosaurs were monstrously gigantic, Pteranodon was average-sized by Pterosaur standards with a 4-6m wingspan.

the p in fron of pterodactyl is a holdover from the original greek, where the p is actually sounded. it comes from the words pteron (wing) and daktulos (finger) lots of words with silent letter come from greek, like psychology, pseudo, mnemonic, hymn etc.
Fun fact: there is a reason why, for instance in psychology people didn't just spell it Sicology when it came over. "psycho" (mind) and "logia" (the study of) is psychology, the study of the mind. But "sico" (fig) "logia" (the study of) is the study of figs.
