- In this video I challenge myself to see if I can beat donkey kong 64 without jumping off the ground. This is not an A button challenge if you are looking for DK64 A button challenge videos RingRush has a second channel that document's all the a presses needed his channel is linked below. I really wanted to play Donkey Kong 64 again but play it in a different way. There are so many cool glitches in the game but they are mostly only useful for any percent runs. I made up this run for a fun challenge for myself to learn a lot of the clips/glitches in DK64 and to find out more about the game. This took me much longer then I expected and I'm glad in the result and how much I learned about the game playing it this way.

I must give respect for going all that way in and still being able to say no it's not, and uploading it.
The best challenge videos really do focus on the extreme limits of the game with effort to complete as much as possible without breaking the rule, or turning it to a minimum challenge. A lot of times it's more about finding the point or points where the challenge is near impossible that we'd never notice on a casual playthrough.

Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze

God I want a remake of this game. If only to see it keep a consistent framerate in creepy castle!
Play it via RetroArch on a Series Xbox, runs like a DREAM at higher resolution and 60fps!
and keep all of the glitches (except helm medals "can never 101% the game file now" glitch since it both saves time and makes you well not able to never get 101%)
did anyone else usually unlock tiny kong before lanky kong? i always would do that mostly because i liked her so much but I see here you unlocked lanky first
Yep, I'm really confused as to why the game considers Tiny the fourth kong instead of Lanky. In Aztec Tiny is found in the first section of the level and Lanky is found later on in the second so I've always just unlocked Tiny since she was unlockable earlier on.
@@TheHaremReviewer I feel like tiny was intended early on to be obtained in frantic factory, with chunky being obtained in maybe gloomy galleon. The change was likely due to mad jack being fought by tiny, and the devs probably didn't want players to have to fight a boss with a character they only just got. It would explain the awkward pacing in how you get the characters and honestly I feel that those stages suit the characters better. That's just speculation though, so take it with a grain of salt.
Tiny legit appears before lanky
I unlocked lanky before tiny but that was only because I didn’t know how to melt the ice where she was trapped. I figured it out though a month later. This was when I was 8 lol

So the new question is:
How many jumps does it take to collect the remaining collectables?
At the beginning, you can just go in the water, use C-Up to clip through a wall, and swim out of the area, bypassing the training barrels and Cranky.
Those are mandatory, if you don't do them its impossible to grab barrels and vines won't appear.
They enable the moves for the kongs. Skipping them wouldn't be ideal in a run like this
Tiny can jump mid-air out of her Z + B move. If you combo this with her mid-air attack or Ponytail Twirl, it seems like you could get a lot more bananas.

There's actually a way to kill the Fungi Forest boss without using Chunky, although I can't remember if you absolutely need to jump.
If you have that kick rule for DK then it should also apply to Diddy since he is airborne for a nanosecond when doing cartwheels

I wouldn't call kick jumping a glitch. You can do the something similar in the Donkey Kong Country games and some things even require it.
yeah, this guy was breaking the rule with that one heavy because that was a mechanic rare intentionally did like that. It's like a trademark of the DK series
@@iKickBullies It's not breaking the rules. A kick is performed with the B button and causes Donkey Kong to go airborne, meaning that jumping from that state is legal, as the only type of jump that isn't allowed is when the chosen kong is on the ground and the A button is pressed.

31:34 you can do that with a "moonkick" by jumping, (yes i think a kickjumping should work) right before landing press b and spam it to arial attack and interrupt it with a kick then go to the edge of the wall which has no collision and youre done its more "complicated?" i guess but its a lot easier

So I know this video is a few years old, but if you complete dogodon quick in angry aztec it gives you the fungi forest key instead of the angry aztec key. With this you can reach creepy castle early and then unlock the kongs from that boss fight

a shame in the end honestly but 3/5 of the phases are built around the barrels the only true jumpless phase is for Lanky as all the others require you to get off the ground. As for the doors, I think DK's tripple B combo gets your hitbox into the level loading zone as well so the rock shenennigans in creepy castle's lobby might be a wasted efford

So I know I'm 7 months late to the game, but you can reach Castle by defeating Dogadon in Aztec and still get Key 5 to open Caves and Castle. To do this simply start the Dogadon fight in Aztec as DK, after the first five fireballs, place the TNT barrel slightly in front of the spawn point, step in front of the barrel and as Dogadon places his hand down after the finger point animation, he will damage you and himself on the same frame. This confuses the game and it tries to play the cutscene from Fungi, but you're in Aztec so DK grows giant and you receive Key 5. Castle as early as Aztec is possible
Do you have anywhere I can read about this/watch a video explanation? I’m trying to get to castle fairly early for my current play through, I wanted to unlock as many Kongs in castle as possible
In Angry Aztec, you can actually get the Diddy GB on top of the temple by chimpy charging the last gong at an angle so it pushes you to the centre of the field, and you get carried up to the top of the temple when it rises.
Just guessing- the answer is probably. No.
It was at least a somewhat more realistic goal of just not being able to jump off the ground, as opposed to not jumping at all.😅 It's still *VERY* impressive seeing just how far he got.😲🤯
You could use oranges to damage boost into some of the lower barrels

the rule with DK being able to jump is a bit extreme
i'm sure he didn't know it at the time, but if he did the quick kill in aztec instead of doing it normal first, it would have skipped many of the trouble shooting he had to do later on since it would have gotten him key 5
Great watch while work has been slow. Sucks that it doesnt look like theres any way to get Diddy into that last barrel at the end. But even if you found a way to do that, isnt there still a Chunky barrel that you would have to get into after that?

If you clip out of the ropes during the K. Rool fight, it teleports you to the middle of the ring. I wonder if it'd be high enough to get in Diddy's barrel?

You can use DK to do a bonus barre and then collect with the appropriate kong
You could enter hideout helm to switch and exit to bananaport to get DK’s blueprint
You can at least get to the top of that Angry Aztec tower as Diddy. You Chimpy Charge facing away from the last gong and run really fast to get on top of the tower before it rises.
Also, if you can change Kongs, does the boulder go back on the hole in Jungle Japes? If not, can you Simian Slam as Donkey, exit level, and come back as Chunky for his underground section?
Dude you can just dash attack off a ledge as Diddy and jump after you're in mid air.

It's been a really long time since I've played DK64, but can't you clip into creepy castle early? I thought you could clip past that B. Locker using oranges.
IIRC you have to jump up stairs to reach B. Locker, so if you need Lanky to get through, then this wouldn't help, but if Donkey can get past B. Locker then you could have unlocked all the Kongs before ever entering Jungle Japes, saving you the effort of clipping into crystal caves.
After seeing the lobby again, maybe not. I still wonder if there's a way to get into the portal without using Chunky to move the boulder. If so, you could avoid having to ground pound the switch to free Chunky.
That last Chunky banana might be obtainable too. The problem seems to be you lose just enough height when jumping to it from off the shore. Swim through the shore, to get underneath it. Then jump and grab it. Since you did the swim through shore glitch, you're still technically swimming so I'd argue it counts.
I figured the K. Rool fight would be a problem. Unfortunately it renders the above kind of pointless (outside of just going until the boss fight).
TECHNICALLY you can do a skid by hold left/right and instanty pressing the opposite direction if you jump on the same frame you do that youll jump but the game still thinks you are skikdding on the ground and you can jump again cause of that and since it think youre on the ground and the jump again is in the air it technically would make this super easy

11:53 you can do it with a ledge clip? its easier to face your back to him, jump backwards, (cuz of a weird glitch that makes you closer to it with that) and spam b to do his slap its easier with lanky obviously but yea he cant jump

I commented like 3 years agto but... you should definetly redo this run eventually, since there's no a few new glitches like Dogadone early which gives you fungi fors't boss key in Angry Aztec making some stuff was easier on you

30:02 In level 3 of DK's Arcade, doesn't it require jumping from platform to platform? Good video either way. About 20 minutes into the video, I paused and said to myself that even if you somehow reached the final boss without jumping, you would still have to jump into Diddy's barrel, with no way of getting around it (same with Tiny and Chunky's parts of the boss fight).
I mean, if you even get there in the first place without jumping, I think we could consider that a win.
So as it turns out, if you clip out of bounds, you get immediately sent to the middle of the arena, which happens to be the exact place where the barrel is located for Diddy, Tiny, and Chunky, meaning you can do their fights without jumping.

If you try falling off onto the moving platforms, Mario just plummets straight down and dies. You have to jump off the ground.

It's not. Even if you could get all the way to the final boss using only donkey kong the final boss still requires you to play as all five kongs

never recorded it, but i think i did a similar challenge, with a few differences.
1, i had a jump counter
2. you can jump onto a tree without influencing the jmup counter
3. no kickumping(i think)
