Gilmore presence on court is amazing, old school big men really could anchor the paint and changed way you played, as great as Jordan, Bird, Magic and others are - The Wilts, Russells, Nate Thurmonds, Artis Gilmores and Kareems, their size and presence can take away from other teams and add a huge advantage to their teams, even guys like Mark Eaton their paint presence is tremendous. Todays NBA has stats are like baseball steroid era is just full of asterisks and unknowns because these guys today have never really contended with this kind of size. Watching the European Baby Shaq vs team USA with Lebron, you could just imagine the reality check these guys of today would have facing old school big men who played in way more physical eras, todays NBA is like trampoline halftime show compared to these old school titanic matchups of the big men, where as todays big matchups are perimeter since mid 90s. Moses Malone is kind of like Ol School Amare Stoudemire and here you got Artis G nullifying Malone's energy on the boards, Artis definitely under appreciated and not talked about enough. Thanks for vids as usual top notch.

Both Gilmore and Malone are very underrated and forgotten centers.
Gilmore was the best center in the ABA (aba champ; rookie of year; MVP ; 11 time all star and 4x rebounding champ)
Malone was one of the best rebounders in history, champ and 3 time MVP and finals MVP!

Moses Malone usually dominated physical matchups against most centers, but not here against Gilmore. Gilmore even prevented Moses from getting his signature offensive rebounds.
Moses was fortunate to have his mid-range jumper in his arsenal, otherwise he would have had no answer for Gilmore's size and shotblocking.
Gilmore was a beast, and should be considered a top 10-15 center of all time.

I have Gilmore ranked 8th all-time when combining his ABA and NBA numbers (could make the case for either Willis Reed, Bill Walton, or Arvydas Sabonis for 7th on that list; Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Bill Russell, Shaquille O'Neal, and Moses Malone pretty much have 1-6 locked up at the moment). Wish more people like myself could've seen him in his ABA prime. Easily the top center in that league and quite possibly Top 3 in all of pro-basketball during that time period. His durability was very underrated. Aside from one major knee injury that cut his 1979-80 season short, the big man just never missed many games his entire pro career.

@@MrScott4020 Yeah, from about 1979-85 when he was the undisputed top big man in the league. HOWEVER, 1972-78-era Gilmore was an absolute monster who in his ABA Colonels prime nearly played the whole game and NEVER missed any during those seasons, either. That Gilmore would've had his way with Moses more often than not too because he was a superior defender in the paint and a lot more mobile than he was in the 80s when he really started to pack on the muscle. Gotta keep it in perspective, buddy!

@@PeekaPeep Gilmore at his apex wouldn't have been a dominated at any point Moses Malone in his prime ,,, a young straight out of highschool Moses Malone campaign inthe ABA in 1975" all rookie team" was terrific ,Gilmore crafted his efficient repertoire from 4 years of collegiate basketball and it still wasn't enough to supplant his elite best years above Moses Malone ,who even as an professional teenager was a worthy test for a seasoned pro like Gilmore . The contrast between them is huge in terms of prime production ,and Moses Malone actually made first team all defensive team in ,83 ,second team 79 ,and his defense overall actually was excellent ,not the shot locker ,shot altered presence that Gilmore was, but he wasn't a zero either,a string body in body ,move his man out of position inthe paint defender ,who did get a respective share of blocked and altered shots occasionally .Moses 22.3 pts 12.7 rebs per game vs Gilmore's 15:6 pts 8.7 rebs per contest vs Moses is the only factual confirmation we can utilize to determine the objective outcome ,Gilmore in 1978 made the team all NBA 2 defensive team ,while still in his prime at 30 years old ,Moses avg 24.8 17.6 rebs per game in 78 .At what rational era in these two Hof gentlemen career would Artis Gilmore dominate Moses Malone ? Never ,no one would deny Artis Gilmore was a defiant obstacle in side the paint ,nor state he didn't make his mark onthe glass ,but he wasn't quick enough off of his feet, had the innate inexhaustible stamina , to adequately contender with Moses inthe boards ,lacked the versatility offensively " was primarily a close to the rim screen " to cause Moses a inordinate amount of problems ,was missing the lateral quickness to derail Moses drives towards the basket consistently . Strength vs strength ,Mises Malone pound for pound was amongst the strongest men in NBA history ,he handed out bruises to goliaths inside the paint ,so Gilmore's percieved strength asset advantage at it's maximum is small if it's that . Context must be applied properly my fellow sports fan . Moses Malone peak is amongst the top tier with the truly great centers Wilt,Kareem ,Hakeem, Shaquille ,, no one who is cognizant about the historical aspect of the NBA has ever stated that about Artis Gilmore . One solid game performance by Gilmore vs Moses dosent dismiss the fact that Moses outplayed Gilmore more often then the other way around . 78 ,82 NBA Moses Malone vs 74 ,75ABA Artis Gilmore ? No one is selecting Gilmore , last time i checked,Moses Malone captured 3 NBA MVP Trophy's , directed two of his teams to NBA finals appearances ,conquering Lakers teams Artis couldn't help his team defeat ,dint forget ,those Spurs were talented ,more talented then Malone's 81 Rockets team .Respect again towards both legendary NBA gentlemen .

Moses always had the quickness advantage over Gilmore. Malone could move laterally better than most big men. More importantly his greatest skill was in his quick leaping ability. Moses could jump 2 or 3 times while Kareem or Artis got up once.

I think Gilmore was the most dominant low post player ever. Not the biggest scorer, not the best player , but Everyone knew if he got the ball down low it was over. Wilt was a better athlete , just as strong , and faster. Artis was fast in the ABA , but became more muscled up and slower in NBA Gilmore hands weren’t as good as Wilts either. But when it comes to posting up , and then muscling up shots down low , think Artis was the best ever . He was very unselfish. He had such a presence . Had to work harder to score , but he could have scored more. His FG percent says it all. Artis also at times seem to disappear, and was so laid back. Not as comfortable in spot light as Kareem and Wilt. Malone a beast too. He was one of the greatest offensive rebounders I ever saw. And he was relentless. He kept coming. Jacksonville was dominating early when John Wooden switched defensive assignments and put the 6 foot 8 inch Sidney Wicks on the 7 foot 2 inch Gilmore. Moses Malone was a better all around player than Gilmore . Gilmore was a bit clumsy. People talk about Moses strength, but more important it was his quickness, intelligence , passing, good outside shooter, and quick tenacious tipping and rebounding . imho Chamberlain was the greatest center prior to his knee injury with LA, and Malone was second best of all time . I'd rate Kareem third . in the late 60's, if memory serves me perhaps up until the 70-71 Philadelphia dominated the NBA with Chamberlain and many nba championships with Chamberlain . but then Boston came along with their team oriented basketball . center Bill Russell said we knew Chamberlain would score a lot of points but we starting to beat them with good team play by the Celtics. the one weakness of Wilt the Stilt was his lazy defense . i must not leave out Dave Cowens of Celtics . He was only about 6'9" but one of the smartest and mobile centers i ever saw . he helped boston win a championship or two in the mid to late 70's . I saw him block Kareem once . Although it was muscular Nate Thurmond of the Warriors who probably blocked more Jabbar shots than anyone. Jabbar said Thurmond was hardest player he ever played against in his whole career . Like Bill Russel, Cowens was a player coach and both won nba champiohships as player coaches . Also an honorable mention to Robert Parrish . Even with Larry Bird, when Parrish was in foul trouble or injured Boston had a hard time winning .
