    Kareem 32 pts, 18 rbs. Moses 23 pts, 15 rbs this contest. Kareem came up big in the deciding game but the Rockets came up with better offensive rebounding the whole series getting solid performances from Reid and Paultz and better scoring from the bench as a whole. Calvin Murphy put up excellent 6th man numbers. The Lakers didn't really get their Showtime run and gun offense going.

  • @camoss3724
    @camoss3724 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The Rockets were always a tough matchup for the Lakers back then because of their size up front. They could control the offensive glass effectively enough to limit the Lakers' running chances. Once the game became a halfcourt affair, the Rockets had the advantage. The Lakers reached the NBA Finals eight times during the 1980s; the two times they didn't make it, they were eliminated by the Rockets.

    Bill Willoughby is on the floor for the Rockets. He made his name for being one of the few players to block Kareem's skyhook. He was a great leaper. Jumped out of the gym.
    So i kinda laughed the play at 4:24 when poor Bill is in the lane and Jabbar comes out of the sky to put that offensive rebound back in.
    It aint no fun when the rabbit got the gun.

      Rockets also got solid play from Reid and Paultz. The Rockets got more offensive rebounding , better scoring from the bench. Calvin played excellent as 6th man off the bench. The Rockets had a good team and seemed to shut down the Lakers Showtime run and gun offense.

    • @hmhm856

      I mean, it was a best 2-of-3 series, so thats probably why
      And this was a 3-seed versus 6-seed matchup, and playoffs upsets are only considered upsets if its a:
      7-seed or 8-seed beating a 1-2-3 seed, AND there is a huge difference in records between both teams facing each other AND the weaker team won 45 games or less AND the stronger team won at least 10 more games than the weaker team.
      Given, the Rockets did have a losing record of 40-42 and the Lakers did win 54 games

    Props to Kareem Abdul-jabbar for taking it to Moses Malone with a vengeance in this deciding game of the 3 game mini series. 35 year old Jabbar outscored Moses, outrebouned him as well as lead his Lakers back to take the lead late. If Magic would have gotten the ball to Kareem one more time that's all they needed.
    Interesting to see Malone for all his physical play flopping mutiple times in the lane when Jabbar had him one on one. Referees didn't buy it.
    I guess at 34 Kareem still had his fastball or hadn't lost it all yet.

    • @x-man9473
      @x-man9473 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Biny Beaks I'm not sure what you're referencing. Kareem got locked down by Thurmond again. He averaged 30 on 55% shooting in the refular season. But he only averaged 22 on 43% shooting in the playoffs and the Bucks lost in the 1st round. He got contained twice.

    • @x-man9473
      @x-man9473 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Biny Beaks Yes. I explained that Kareem was contained by showing how significantly he dropped in that playoff series as opposed to the regular season. Also, they won in 72 because Robertson was able to pick up the slack and run the offense. When they lost in 73, it was because Robertson's injury prevented him from performing well during the series, so he couldn't save Kareem that time.

    1981 Rockets = one of the four Western Conference teams to beat the young/prime Magic-Lakers in the playoffs. And the 1981 Rockets had a losing record of 40-42
    Rockets are also the only team to beat the Magic-Lakers in the postseason multiple times = 1981, 1986, 1996
    Other Western conference team to beat Magic Lakers in the playoffs = 1990 Suns

  • @teofemo7000

    Moses looked helpless vs a determined Abdul-Jabbar in that 4th quarter. Flopping like a fish. Kareem was swoopwin right over him, around him, through him. They both had 17 points midway through the 3rd quarter.
    From then on Jabbar whip him 15-5. Even outrebounding Malone. So much for the folks who say Jabbar couldn't handle Malone you saw it in this game. The deciding game. If Magic didn't have such a terrible game LA would have one comfortably. 2-14 including that last airball. Johnson was still a kid though overrated at that time.
