      The issue is that the O-rings only dampen the down stroke of a the key press. It's really hard to quiet down none silenced switches because the experience of silencing comes from the upstroke and down stroke. Probably the biggest thing you can do to quiet down a switch is to lube them with a thick lube so the switch will be a tiny bit slower to bottom out and to come back up which can significantly reduce sound.

    after slamming my own keycaps multiple times w/o the o-rings, I hereby conclude that the noise from a mechanical keyboard originally came from the keycaps hollowed structure itself you can try to reduce the collision noise etc. However the reduction isn't significant. Laptop keycaps are not that loud coz its nearly flat shaped. Thank you for coming to my ted-talk. Sheeeeeeeeeeeshhh

  • @Chokkan

    It great that you tested the three different switches under very similar conditions. You can really hear the difference and the decibels don't lie.
    O rings are an effective, cheap, and easily reversible way to make the downstroke quieter. My issue with them is that they reduce the travel and feel too spongy. Unfortunately, once you've bought a noisy keyboard, there's not a great deal you can do to make it quieter without resorting to a bit of DIY by lubing the stabilisers. Plus most cheap keyboards, and some expensive ones have very rattly stabilisers.

    does this solve the metallic echo that some keyboards get? mine is so loud and out of control it drives me nuts to type on it

    Are the O-rings you linked compatible with keyboards other than those listed? I have Logitech G710+, just want to make sure.

    My favourite switch is IBM's buckling spring(well actually Unicomp's, I don't have an actual model M) and making it quiter is a lost cause, I'm actually watching for a friend.

      I'd recommend you get an extra keyboard that suits your needs when you need to be more quiet, you don't want to be taking your key caps on and off all the time anyway, it's easier to just swap the keyboard

    If I buy a silent keyboard will it be quieter than those o-rings? I feel that the orings are still really loud.

      GameFace not a great idea, as it makes the key more mushy, and the switch may not even register a click.

    my question is does it the o rings affect the responsivity of the keys

  • @exe_
    @exe_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Or you could just plug that rubber dome usb if you’re all about that spongy feel at the end of your keystroke.

  • @louisczar6483
    @louisczar6483 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What o rings do is they make the plastic of the keys not hit as hard as if you are using the keyboard normally without them, it makes it feel very displeasing, the only good thing about them is that it quiets down the keyboard a touch, but ruins that by making it feel rubbery and trash. just get a keyboard, buy something called spray lube, and then take off all your keycaps and then just hold down the key you want to make quieter, and then spray, it can get messy so get like 8 paper towels to clean after.
