After my Masai Kenyan spouse died of cancer in 2019, I traveled to Botswana for a conference. I met a beautiful Tswana woman, a lawyer whom I eventually married in November, 2021. Good people, quiet and peaceful nation. Peace be upon Botswana forever.

    • @the8thchurch461

Considering being in Africa? That is the mistake people make about Africa. You all think we are very different from you but let me ask you this question, can you do business with monkeys in the jungle? There is your answer. When Europe colonised us, she also was FORCED to bring us to a level where she can do business with us. So it is propaganda to say that we are backwards. It doesn't serve the West to leave us underdeveloped because she needs a market for her products. Don't let people make a fool out of you by selling you lies. Africa is not too far behind you, trust me.

Batswana are generally, not all , note that, peaceful people. Even this video is about Batswana. I don’t even know why we are arguing about Namibians. But one thing I know there is no nation in this earth where the people are 100% good, otherwise you wouldn’t have prisons in Namibia. And I don’t dispute that they’re not generally good. And you cannot use one awful experience you had in Botswana to generalize their character.

usually we say "excuse me" when we are around someone or people and we do something considered disgusting, for example, burping,farting...it is used as an ask to be pardoned after doing a not so pleasant behaviour. also others would say, "excuse my language", perhaps if they spoke an insult or about to use an offensive word. another way to use excuse me is to ask for a person's attention,if you wish for them to make way you add onto that and say "excuse me,can I pass" aka "sorry, can I pass". most literate Batswana actually acknowledges must as a command because we are taught so in school, but how it's used most of the time is a matter of broken English- improper use of the word.

if i am blocking your way and you say 'sorry', i let you pass. If you say 'excuse me', i stop (still blocking your way), look at you and expect you to say something like 'hey can you help me here'.

Helen .. Excellent piece. As a Muzungu in London I have to listen more closely to Nigerian English accents, even tho I have had the pleasure and honour of many interactions with Nigerian people.
I've been to Ghana and Botswana, Uganda and Kenya. Botswanan is closer to UK English at least aurally IMO.
    Really good video.
I enjoy language and accents in general.
As an English Man it's fascinating to sample so many different World wide interpretations of the language we proudly gave to the World.
Sadly nowadays some people would describe the above compliment as having "Colonial" connotations
Do you have an actor inside you?
