  • Gato Zinzli (Sesame Balls) are traditional sweets made by the Chinese community in Mauritius for special occasions such as Chinese New Year. We have 2 varieties, the soft sweet potato version and the plain flour version which is harder version.
You can use a variety of fillings for these pastries, the most common ones are red bean paste(made from adzuki beans), sweet mung bean, cooked papaya, crushed peanuts and lotus paste. The types of fillings have evolved over the years, for example you can get a salted egg version in Singapore and Malaysia.
These are best enjoyed when they are hot, they will still be delicious after a day but will lose their crispiness.
Gato Zinzli I Sesame Balls I Jian Dui
    Ingredients:
    1 Large Sweet Potato (about 200- 250g)
    100 - 120g Glutinous Rice Flour + 1 Tablespoon (for coating)
    4 Tablespoons Sugar
    6 Tablespoons Raw Sesame Seeds
    600ml Vegetable Oil
    (Makes 12 - 15 Sesame Balls)
    Sweet Mung Bean Filling
    Ingredients:
200g Mung Dal (Shelled Mung Beans)
    125g Sugar
    1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Essence
    ! Tablespoon of Vegetable Oil
    1 Large Pinch of Salt
    3 Tablespoons of Grated Coconut
    **Note:
You can use any variety of sweet potato for this dish (I used orange and purple sweet potato). They can be baked instead of being boiled/steam.
The sesame balls need to be cooked on low heat. Wait for oil to cool down a little before you fry the next batch.

    (1) Gato Zinzli is also one of my all time favourite sweet treats. Possibly on a par with "Pudding Manioc" and a good "Bessan Laddoo." I cannot decide now. They are all very moreish.
    (2) Can you please use more utensils with a reflective surface? I am trying to catch a glimpse of you but it is not easy. The pressure cooker lid nearly made a "face reveal." 😘

Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe. Do you think normal rice flour would do? Can’t find glutinous flour due to lockdown 😣

Hi dear. I doubt that it will work as glutinous rice flour gives it its soft texture. Try amazon or Indian/Asian shops that do delivery 🙂
