Burgers are a staple in the Western world. People eat millions every year, from the cheap, fast-food option to expensive, gourmet editions.
And vegetarian alternatives have existed for a long time. But as more evidence piles on, everything from how much water it consumes and how much land it requires, the future of meat consumption seems to be coming to an end.
Two companies want to create a vegan option that's just as good as the real thing. This battle, however, is much more than just a burger patty. It's controversies, big names, and questionable products. So, let's take a look at the duel between Beyond Meat vs. Impossible Foods in this episode of Company Forensics.

It's misleading, you can eat a burger a day and make sure you're below if not right on point for your sodium daily consumption. Btw for anyone reading this, daily sodium intake based on the FDA is supposed to be less than 2300mg, so it's possible to be in that range and still enjoy the food you consume.

In their marketing campaigns, all beef farm systems in the world are simplified to that one same image of feedlots and deforestation, while many beef farmers all around the world work towards a carbon neutral beef production system. Carbon sequestration by holding cattle on pastures, lowered emissions due to adapted, animal-specific feed composition, planting trees to give the animals shade in summer,...
Meanwhile, these multinationals need all of their resources coming from cash crops, highly processing them using lots of energy just trying to recreate a certain taste, not adding any extra nutritional value. Acoording to them, thousands of family-run farms aiming to apply all durable practices, producing beef op excellent quality, have no right of existance. I think the whole "farmland used for grazing" is overstated in importance. Land suitable for grazing is typically much lower quality than land where you can actually grow plant crops, and many countries have a lot of this type of land, like the USA and Argentina. The ability to feed livestock excess food crops is also great for the farmers who grow food crops, this lowers risk in growing stuff like corn and lentils, since the ranchers will always buy any quantity (for a lower price than when used for human food, but still it's predictable and safe). Cows eating grass is a very nice form of upcycling nutrition, since grass has zero nutrient value for humans and beef has large nutrient value. Obesity is a real problem, and not eating meat every day is good for you, but that does not mean cows destroy rainforests. In fact, burning of rain forests is to make space for growing food crops for humans, like soybeans and oil palm.

    • @playerik2135
      @playerik2135 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I get, where you're coming from. However there is a bit more to the problem of land use. First of all, animals eat a lot more food, than they produce. Cows for example need about 8 calories (iirc, could be more) of plants, just to produce one calory of meat. That means, that for the same amount of food, you need 8 times the amount of land. Of course, you can use "worse" land for grasing, but the reality is, that most live stock is fed soy, or other crops. In fact, the soy that gets the rainforest burned is mostly used for animals.
If we all adopted a vegan diet, that would drastically lower our landuse and co2 emissions (it is estimated that around 15% of global emissions are just from meat production). In addition to that, the now unused land could be led back to its natural state, which in most cases is forests. These new forests would take roughly 16 years of global co2 emissions out of the atmosphere.
Plus that would also drastically lower the chances of more pandemics.
If you want more information -with sources- i recommend watching some of earthling eds videos.

      Who keeps perpetuating these myths?
Very little of what you said is factually true and the implied conclusion that cattle grazing isn’t really hurting the environment is a flat-out lie.
80% of grazing land worldwide was *not* grassland before it was converted for grazing, it was most often forested. The definition of “land where you can actually grow crops” sweeps a bunch of wrong assumptions under the rug, starting with “what counts as a crop?” Where I live, in NEPA, dairy farming is done on land too marginal to grow corn, but that land *could* grow wheat perfectly well, but wheat is less profitable than dairy (especially given the current government subsidies given to the dairy industry).
Over 90% of the rainforest of Madagascar were cut down to make grazing land for cattle, and neither the protein nor calories from the cattle are necessary to support the people of Madagascar, they just like having lots of cattle as status symbols, showing personal wealth.

    • @ThePhiphler

@@ThePhiphler you are correct, the economics don’t make sense *because the government subsidizes dairy!* If there were far less demand for dairy and more demand for wheat then the land would be able to provide *more* human nutritional value per acre growing wheat than growing pasture for cows to graze. I’m glad you understand my point.
My comments on Madagascar are not patronizing! They are behaving in a very stupid way for very short-sighted goals. I’m sick and tired of leftist bullshit “people should be free to do whatever they want, all lifestyle choices are equally valid, let’s all get together and sing kumbaya” I am not patronizing to look at bad behavior and call it out for being bad behavior. If you had a child or a friend who was, for example, continually maxing out credit cards, unwilling to keep a job, denying financial reality, would you just give them money anytime they asked and shrug your shoulders, thinking “oh, it’s ok, they can choose to live their life however they want.” Or would you confront them any say “dude, this isn’t sustainable, you have to clean up your act and take responsibility and make better choices.” When the rest of the world looks on while Madagascar destroys their island (and then themselves) with a collective shoulder-shrug of “not my problem” then we are behaving the same as the bad friend who can’t be bothered to intervene in my example.

It will take a while to reach same prices as real meat given historically sale prices of Beyond Meat are decreasing by 3% each year. The companies need to continue scaling up production and also successfully lobby for subsidies like those given to meat producers. It will take around 20 years to reach price equivalence.

As a vegan who (before the pandemic and hopefully again afterwards) regularly entertains groups of 4 to 10 people for 2 to 3 days at a time, grilled Beyond Burgers is a cornerstone of my cooking. Give a meat eater a perfectly grilled Beyond Burger with melted vegan cheese, fresh tomato, onion slices, it’s familiar and comfortable, usually they don’t even realize they are eating vegan. Impossible Burger is a key ingredient for a fantastic “meat” sauce for pasta, and their meatless meatballs can be used in pasta or in a meatball sandwich, again it’s all about feeding friends food that is familiar to them. I won’t presume to say what *you* should, or should not, cook for *your* guests, just letting you know that they (BYND and Impossible) are a great option for preparing vegan meals that meat eaters can enjoy.

Tried these many times, it's just not the same, I've had friends try to "trick" me at my own request, it's been random, cooked in different ways, I can just instantly tell and don't finish it

Okay, I don’t mean to sound rude or anything and I hope people take this in a constructive way...
Honestly, the industrialized western world needs to look into Indian (Asian) Cuisine for vegetarian dish inspiration. Not saying y’all need to make “curry” your daily driver, but like just note down the incredible list of options y’all have in terms of vegetables to choose and cooking methodologies. EVEN if you’re one of those “Strictly vegan” folks, it’s super easy to make great dishes that taste “amazeballs.”
This “invest millions to make it taste like meat” makes me chuckle sometimes. It’s entirely an “American only issue” from what I’ve seen.
Again not to seem rude. But like...just take notes from other vegetarian heavy countries...It’s easier. And cheaper....and won’t give you “side effects” down the line if at all. Just normal organic stuff that we’ve been eating for centuries.
And one more thing: “Paneer”. Google it.

I think if the companies stuck to more of an environmental message instead of a health message, there wouldn't have been so much backlash. I think both products are fantastic advances for sustainable foods that are environmentally and ethically conscious. Even though I'm definitely not a vegan, I can see the value in having food we can eat together without a compromise in taste.

The reason I eat Impossible Meat occasionally is not for health. It’s because a beautiful loving animal didn’t give its life for me to simply eat and enjoy a hamburger.
