  • In this video, we cover an ugly textured ceiling with tongue and groove pine boards for $1.68 per square foot. It was easier to install a plank ceiling over drywall instead of skim coating it. A plank ceiling is also a great decorative feature that gives the room a coastal feel.

    I did the same thing with my dated 70s style family room that had wall paneling and beams. The room had popcorn ceilings I hated and I spent the extra $ to get primed clear pine 1/2"x6"x16' T&G boards (no defects), as I wanted no joints across the ~15' span. The cost was expensive at about $36 per board, but I got to say it exceeded my expectations and a bunch of people I know want to do the same thing now. It looks beautiful and worth it to me not to have to prime it, as well as not deal with the defects. I also put n those exact same wafer LEDs.
    I used 18 GA narrow crown staples and had to put up 3/4x1.5" furring strips, as the T&G ran in the same direction as my joists. I'll be doing the same in the kitchen to match the look, when I re-face & build new doors for the cabinets to get rid of the, again, 70s dated golden oak look.

    Looks good, I was planning to do something like this with ceilings in two rooms of my house this summer/fall. Question: since its been two years, have you had any issues with the pine boards distorting due to moisture, drying out, etc?

    Any problems with shrinkage and expansion between seasons? I built a small ceiling with these same pineboards that I nailed to the rafters I put up for the loft I built. But it's a small loft of about 80 sq ft. No problems there. But I'm debating whether I want to use this method, or hung MDF planks for the big 800 sq ft downstairs.

      @handydadtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We need installed them in the summer last year so they probably shrunk in the dryness of the winter. But we didn’t notice anything because we prepainted the boards, including the tongues. So we’d see white even if they shrunk a bit.

    I like the light primer look. Is that just a thin coat of sprayed water base wood primer?

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rolled, not sprayed.

    Just for comparison on this crazy wood prices. I just bought the same boards for $8.98 per board.

      Yeah it’s crazy but supposedly coming back to “normal” - whatever that is now.

    We have this kind of ceiling in our new house. It clearly has several coats of paint that is chipping off. I’m in the process of removing the paint and it’s a pain. Can I use paintable caulk in the gaps to keep it looking nice when it expands and contracts? I started doing it but didn’t finish yet.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that’s a lot of work over your head! Yes, you can caulk every joint, or just the big ones, to give a better paint job if you don’t like seeing the cracks. But it’s obviously a lot of work, and the beauty of a plank ceiling are the imperfections of natural wood.

    • @JoAnnaLynne
      @JoAnnaLynne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@handydadtv the problem we have is that we have to remove many layers of paint that were done after the boards were installed so the cracks look terrible. I was worried that the paintable caulk would cause an issue if there was ever a leak. Thoughts?
