      Good video, as a carpenter,the only think I would do is ,start with the grove a ,and nail the tongue,(in Scotland we call it secret nailing,)then when you get to the end board it's easier to finish,the last board we just cut the BACK of the grove of ,so that it fits over the tongue,and you don't struggle , getting it in,(hope this makes sense to you),,🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      @@thadh4085 make a story pole and see how wide your first board will be so that your boards on each end are close to the same size. Maybe try using something like the zip wall poles has to hold up one end and middle of the piece if you can find a tool like that. Obviously you can’t always use it since not all ceilings are flat.
      Or if you butt t@g to a beam, highly recommended starting top to bottom tongue down

    I admire your relaxed, chill, demeanor. I often feel tension ..I’m pushing, pushing, trying to make good time and hold to my estimated timeline. There are inevitable setbacks, little problems, typical to every job and every job I do takes longer than I planned for. I don’t bid by the hour. I give a specific bottom line bid price. I can estimate matl. cost very accurately but always underestimate the number of man hours . I’ve been in biz 41 years and in the trades 46 years. Yet, I’m still too optimistic on my time frame computations....hence the tension. The upside is that I always deliver quality craftsmanship and have a long list of very satisfied customers. I think I’m usually 25% off on my time estimates. Guess I’ll just add 25% to my labor figure on the next bid. I use $65 per hour when figuring my labor cost. Anyway....congrats on your thriving business, your command of the craft, your video skills and thanks for sharing your experiences and advice. I can’t imagine being an employee. : I would always overestimate my time. That way I never felt pressured with time constraints and customers are never upset when I would finish a job early. Of course, I would charge $50/ Hr. based on actual time spent to complete the project. I also enjoy watching Richard tackle these jobs. The thing is that he makes difficult projects look easy which is the true sign of talent in my opinion.

      I don't mind running 8hrs over my estimated time, because I know my customers appreciate my attention to detail.
      They will tell their friends and family, and I can recover most of that time, if not all on the next job I price out.
      I've had 2 or 3 pissy customers since 1980.
      Carpentry makes me happy, so I'd rather Donate my hours on a job to get future referrals, than Stress about it. It all works out in the wash.

      @victorsupreme214 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      " I give a specific bottom line bid price." - Unless you have clairvoyancy and x-ray vision giving a fixed price with no variations allowed leaves you in the lurch with unexpected or hidden problems (costs).
      Perhaps using your standard estimate + 25% as the lower end and + 50% as the higher end of a 'fixed estimate range' to give to clients.

    Just finished installing this on my own 1000 sq Ft rancher renovarion. It wasn’t easy but like you demonstrated, if you plan ahead and square up both sides of the room as well as ensure you measure out and trim the starting wall properly so you don’t end up with a little sliver on the far side lol. I blind nailed mine straight to the rafters with 16 ga 2” nails perpendicular to the joists and it’s solid as hell. I staggered mine something like 6,8,10,12 in the large rooms and it looks super nice. It’s nice to see that as an amateur I pretty much “nailed” my installation like a pro would. 😂 great work guys!

      @Dave-ek2jx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's awesome you tackled that on your own. Great job! Btw by "staggered" I hope you don't mean you stair-stepped them. With flooring and panelling you always want your joints to be as random as possible. That being said, a lot of veteran carpenters do stair-step their joints. It's a common mistake. It isn't "wrong" but it doesn't look as good as random joints.

    Looking good brother..congratulations on landing that job. I know its a nice one and there is nothing better then a customer that values your work and understands this is the part that makes the job. The attention to detail towards the end of the build. You can have the best framers,drywallers in the world but you have a person or crew start slamming trim and whole job looks like crap. Now don't get me wrong..I know every phase should be treated just as good bc everything does matter but now a days you see so many companies rushing through projects and using crap materials. A question I always ask the guy's is "don't you enjoy feeling good at the end of the day..when you can take off your belt step back and look and be proud of what you did" It seems so many people want things done as fast and cheap as possible. And that's contractor's as well as customer's. I can remember the day's I would take on anything and everything I could but over the years I wised up and came to realize everything isn't for me. If it's gonna beat on my pride then I will politely tell them I don't think I'm the right guy for the job. I know way shape or form am I living the dream and in position to turn down every job that's not the "perfect" job but we still stay working and at the end of the day we head home feeling good about yourselfers and knowing we did everything correctly and what we built was done with pride and respect towards our customers.

    Nice job, that's what I am doing this week. FYI blind nailing T&G is totally fine, the tongue will only split out if you nail too close to the cut edge, but even so the next board can slide tight over it. We only face nail if you can't fit the nail gun up there next to the peak of the ceiling.

    First off..beautiful job. And congratulations on landing the this project. I remember you saying there is a lot of work there and alot of cool things planned. A couple things I may have done a little different but I'm a fan and not here to talk any kinda trash about you should have done this or that. I am a little surprised this far into the build of the home the builder or customer or whoever is overseeing the building in a whole hasn't had power in there yet. Especially with finish work starting. If you are wearing a skully inside I'm guessing it's a little cold in there? Gotta get that house conditioned. Just don't want you running into any issues. Nothing worse then redoing something you just did. Plus imagine how much nicer your day would go with some power, heat, lights and I'm guessing water isn't on yet either? Just don't want anything falling back on you. Hope everything goes well and looking forward to all the new videos. That house is gonna be something else..what's the size of that vent pipe for the range hood 10"-12"?

    Maybe it's just me but I have hung alot of t&g and always put the first board groove side to the wall. That way I can hit the tongue with my soft blow hammer if necessary for fit and not the groove side which could break. I put the last two boards in together by angling both and pushing the middle in for a tight fit. My 18ga. Milwaukee with the right tip blind nails just fine and saves on putty later. I have had good luck with ceiling boxes/cans putting a thin bead of silicone on their edge and placing the board up the pressing against it. Take it down and use a hole saw or jig saw. Wouldn't work on those sprinkler heads though...Looks like it is going to be a great project for you!

I've painted all different styles of stairs using just these tools. For all but the super high stuff I've gotten away with a combination of the step stools, the 4 shorter ladders and the planks. Then you've got the stairs that go from the first floor all the way to the ceiling of the second floor; all open space. In these cases I'll take the extension ladder and place it straight up the tall side so the feet are sitting on the first floor and it's extended to within 7' or so of the ceiling; I'm 6' tall so with my hands above my head I can easily reach the ceiling. Then I put the plank one side onto the aluminum ladder and the other end on one of my other ladders sitting either on the landing in the middle or the floor of the second story.

    Outstanding job as always Richard. Why when they installed the sprinkler heads didn’t they allow for the material thickness? Now they have to extend the piping to if needed they work correctly. I hope there is attic access as I just had to Sheetrock around 11 replacement heads on an older house and they cut out 12”x12” squares for access and working space as there wasn’t an attic above.

    Great work guys. I do have 1 question is there a reason you install with groove side ahead. Ive been building for 20+ yrs & I have always installed it like flooring tongue side ahead. Very curious maybe I'll learn something

    Great video! Quick question-did you have to account for expansion gaps near the walls?

    Great video! Do you recommend using glue if you have plywood underneath or is nailing it fine?

    Wow, residential fire suppression system. Nice. With a room that large and open, that will likely save that house from burning down. Especially since there's no gypsum board on the ceiling.

    Great video! I'm about to begin installing T&G like you installed on my hallway ceiling. My concern is I have a air intake register for my AC unit in the ceiling there and not sure how that will come down or be lowered to the same level at the new T&G. Is there an extension or something else to use to lower the vent intake? Thank you and keep up the great videos>>

    I've got to put some of these up on like a trag styled ceiling and I've been stalling trying to get some more experienced assistance but that ain't forthcoming amid today's covid mindset workers. Major problem is that the place aint squared and I've put it in once. I might just end up doing this with my uncle this weekend if the professionals don't show up. I have to agree with other comments here. You are chill. Stay safe.

    Looks awesome! Question small kitchen how do you finish it with an open ceiling to the dinning room? I just want this in my kitchen ! I believe you should lay the boards in length?

    One of the natural awesomeness of the universe is joists usually run on the short length or perpendicular to the line of sight as you walk in. So that makes the t&g go parallel to the line of sight which makes the room look much bigger.

    Great video! Thank you for sharing. One quick question, is it possible to install this without drywall or plywood? I'm pulling down the drywall so I can better insulate the cathedral ceiling.

    Did my tongue and groove ceilings 6 months ago, only difference is I routed the ends/seams of every board to match the sides, and it looks sharp. I may be biased but I like the router edges better than the flat butt ends.
