Been watching you guys for awhile. I appreciate your honest reviews. I'm aware you and other TH-camrs receive free bottles from distilleries for review.... And from my experience, just my opinion, you guys are among the few that will honestly give your opinion when receiving free juice, and that's very admirable. Thanks guys
In my experience, BTACs are barely huntable these days. Either they go to the caterer who buys $50000 worth of booze a year from the store or into a raffle/lottery. They’re like animals in the zoo, technically they’re in your area but you can’t hunt them as they’re behind glass
Totally agree. Weller Special Reserve and regular Buffalo Trace are the only ones I've ever seen, even at an outrageous price. They just do not exist near me unless you know a store clerk.
@@CharleyCareyAgreed. I live and work in the D.C. area and outside of absolutely outrageously marked up liquor stores, the majority of bottles really go to lobbying firms and think-tanks. They move the inventory and have zero problem with a massive markup.
I just bought a 2023 bottle of Stagg Jr at a quickmart/gas station in Illinois for $179 in a small glass case with some other BTAC (Eagle Rare was $69). I know it's above MSRP but at Half secondary I grabbed it. It's odd where you may find BTAC products.
I was able to snag an Eagle Rare 17 (19) this year, and I absolutely love it! I opened it as soon as I got it home because I love to taste my bourbons fresh upon opening, then try it again after it's had a chance to open up. First nosing and taste were incredibly bold, and I appreciated the higher proof, but the second tasting was incredible! It's like a dark honey, maple syrup, charred brown sugar that goes down smooth but with enough presence to let you know it's there. It's going to be hard to not run through this! Eagle Rare 17 was my very first BTAC bottle years ago (I took it to Vegas and drank it all over a five day period). I'm so glad I chose this as my bottle this year!
The one comment about developing those store relationships - it really helps that you have a TH-cam channel. Its extremely competitive out there unless you spend literally thousands per week. Spending even more money just to get a shot at BTAC or Pappy? I'd be better off just paying secondary. Takes a miracle to even get Eagle Rare 10 at MSRP from a shop in my area - some even upcharge them if you win them in a raffle. Luckily, I prefer the Beam profile more than the Buffalo Trace profile for bourbon. I prefer high rye over wheated bourbons. Most of the Rye I enjoy come from smaller/craft distilleries (or sourced MGP). No one appreciates foreign whiskey in my area so I can find crazy allocated Japanese & Scotch for good prices. Ran across Hibiki 21 the other day for $550 (under MSRP) but didn't have the budget to buy it. Might still be sitting on shelf. Yamizaki 12 is always available for $120-160. Similarly, stuff like Octomore, Spring Bank, and Black Arts are just sitting on shelves. My point - this hobby isn't as bad if you aren't a Tater. Far less stressful.
Holds a special place in my heart, first bourbon I ever tried. Still love it. And still find it for $35. In this market for a 10yr age statement. Yes please.
You're lucky. I get it from the distillery at MSRP (twice this year) and it is $45 plus I can only buy 1 bottle per person every 90 days. If you are getting it at $35 you should buy everything on the shelf. Just sayin'
I think you should revisit this in a couple months to see if it opens up. I have a couple bottles that were just ok on the first couple pours and after a few months they opened and are stellar. Nulu double toasted and calumet 16 for example.
I’m actually sipping a 10 yr eagle rare and funny you talked about butter scotch. I can actually detect a hint of butter scotch when drinking this. I’m 52 and stumbled across your channel and love it. I want to learn the finer points to drinking bourbon. Very interesting stuff thanks👍
Great video, nice to see each of your personalities compliment each other on the Channel. You both always make me smile and/or laugh. Not sure I'll ever get a chance to enjoy one of these types of highly allocated offerings for a variety of good reasons. Thanks for sharing each of your opinions and experiences with the tastings.
I had an opportunity with the 2022 version of this pair and couldn’t agree more with Trenton. It’s good, but I would never wait in line for it. They weren’t that different. One more reason the FOMO is gone, and I stick to my shelfers and store picks.
I just tried a flight of ER17, WLW and Saz18. All three were great, but the ER17 stood out to me, the WLW drank its proof and on a short pour it was hot for all the sips
For my Birthday this year I went to a resturant that happened to have Van Winkle 12, and WLW. Had the WLW first and was floored. The VW12 didnt hold a candle to it because it was a lower proof. Had a George T. Stagg for the first time on vacation in seattle a few weeks ago and was amazed, but it didn't hit that same mark for me the WLW did. Still, very very very good. Way better than anything I have at home.
Local bar gets all the BTAC and i got to try the last batch of Eagle 17. It was so unique and instantly took my top overall spot. I'd pay a lot for one but not full secondary.
Nice review! Nice to have that relationship with a store owner! I’ve made a few good friends now (no BTAC at SRP) but they give me some great deals because prices around me are stupid. Parker’s Heritage 900.00 Stagg 350-550.00 JD 12ry 600.00 Etc. I did score 6 bottles in the last two weeks! Yes I like eagle rare but I’m not going to camp outside a store ever to get any bottles. I’m okay with what I can get every time I walk into a store and pay msrp. It’s ridiculous what some will do to get alcohol. And all of these distilleries are getting out of control with prices 10000 for a single bottle and WT putting out some bottles that are 350-450 it’s just crazy. It’s great that you got a bottle of this and I’m glad you like it but this isn’t something I’m even considering on getting.
Hi guys! I had a nice experience with Eagle Rare 10 year old but I also know people where it is a hit and miss. I really enjoyed it! Hey the hair cut is for a terrific cause! You guys rock!
I got my hands on a bottle of ER10 a while back. It's the only bottle I've ever had and the only time I've ever drank ER10. And I have to say, for me, I didn't enjoy it neat. So many other bottles were far better to me. Kinda like what Trenton is saying here. So I guess it's pretty batchy. But I tell you where I did like it, and that is as a mixer. It was great mixing it for cocktails. I used a lot of my bottle to spike egg nog and it was excellent.
Liquor in my area is state controlled. This is good as prices in stores are always MSRP. But bad as most rare bottles (like all BTAC) are only distributed via lottery. I've seen exactly 1 bottle of regular Eagle Rare in a store in the last 7 years. I didn't get as the person ahead of me had already snagged it.
On your proof question. I’ve had the ER17 and a 2014 Handy. I think the ER probably was about average for the proof but the Handy drank way below what I would have expected - especially as a rye
I went to the liquor store today, and as I was buying a couple beers the owner was putting an ER17 on the top shelf for the very low and very reasonable price of $2,499. I plan on going back and picking it up on the 35th of Neveruary.
I finally seen Eagle Rare 10yr on a shelf today here in Texas and it was $79.99 glad I didn’t buy it! I will definitely snag one up once I see it at a $40-$50 range I really like when you guys give an ideal price range to let me know when not to be a chump
The ER17 im definitely interested in. I use to love me some ER10 when i 1st started. Its definitely a great starter to introduce someone into the bourbon world. When i jumped head 1st into the bourbon drinking world. I was lured into it with ER10. & It was amazing & still isn't bad. Now that I've had some really excellent bourbons over the years. ER10 tends to sit untouched on the shelf anymore because others i have just simply crush it. It just doesn't do it for me anymore & im not out hunting for it all the time.
I got a bottle of the Weller this year and yes, it does drink to that 133.6 proof 100%. I tried it with 2 drops of water last night and it did open up a little (got a surprising orange/citrus note at the end) and I think, I will try it again tonight with a little more water to it.
I get a little pepper spice at the end of eagle rare too, light like black pepper, I taste that in Basil Hayden too but its nicer and more balanced in the eagle rare

I recently had a George T Stagg had 138 proof that did not drink to 138. Found a decently priced. Pour at a local bar and enjoyed every bit of it. Eagle rare 17 was quite a bit more pricey.
Last year I got to try the whole BTAC shortly after release at my favorite bar. My takes- top spot was GTS for depth and personality in flavor, followed close by WLW. Handy is a wonderful rye but drinks like jet fuel. So hot. I personally didn’t observe wild differences between ER10 and ER17 so my expectations weren’t really met. Saz was a laggard, not in the same air as the other 4. I’d put Pappy below GTS, WLW and Handy. Call me crazy.
I've had Eagle Rare 10 once and it was early on in my bourbon experience. Back then I didn't think much of it. I'd like to try it again as my palate has grown the past few years. I haven't seen it on shelves near me in a long long time though.
I don’t remember if you’ve done this or not, but… I would be curious to see a video with WT101 where you have a bottle half full, one 3/4 empty and a fresh crack. Leave the opened ones sit closed for a couple of months before doing the head to head to head.
I remember buying ER10 for around $28 a bottle. I’ve tried multiple times but have never been able to come around to enjoy it. Just always hits me wrong. It’s always been odd to me because I’ve always been okay, good, or great with BT products, but I’ve never been able to wrap around the ER10. It’s all subjective, of course, but that’s where I lie with the bottle.
I got a ER10 a few months ago from a buddy who lucked up and found it for $40/bottle and picked up 4. Tried it the first night and was not impressed. I was so disappointed because I had been looking forward to it. I let it open up and tried a couple months later and it’s still the same. Ok on the front end but an end note and aftertaste of a sharpie marker and very bitter. I’m letting it sit a few more months to see if it will get better. I got ZERO of that cherry note.
I would be curious about your feelings on which bottles become better once they have been opened for a while. I am a novice. I like Eagle Rare but I find if the bottle has been opened for 6 months with a quarter or more of the bottle removed it tastes much better, even to the point where I would call it different than a brand new bottle. Do they all get better? Do certain bourbons get better? What has been your experience?
In general, once you get past the neck of the bottle and get a little air in it, the bourbon gets better. However, once the level of the bourbon gets low, too much air in the bottle can make it worse if the bottle sits like that for too long.
It's a damn shame bourbon became so trendy over the last 10-12 years. I used to be able to buy any of the BTAC by the 3 bottle case each year from the local Specs here in Houston without any competition at $65/bottle. Scored multiple Stagg, WLW, and ER17 cases without fail year after year. Haven't been able to lay my hands on a single bottle for nearly five years now. We didn't know how good we had it.
Eagle Rare 10 is hit an miss with me. But, I fell in love with Found North after seeing it on this channel. I would love to see a comparison between the ER 17 and Found North, especially since they are around the same age
I have never had the opportunity to try any of the BTAC releases to this point. OHLQ has a lottery every December for a chance to buy one of the bottles and I hope to get lucky sometime. Beyond that, I just keep an eye open at my favorite bourbon bars to see if they come up with any of these and are not over charging for a pour. Until then, I enjoy the reviews on these bottles very much!
I "tatered" last weekend outside a shop thinking there would be BTAC/Pappy released. Was first in line on Black Friday at 2:45am. Was not to be. I did however score one of my unicorns the coveted EH Taylor Barrel Proof for 130$ I was still a happy camper for sure, looks like BTAC/Pappy has been delayed a bit this year on the full distribution. Coming soon I hope!
I kinda thought this was gonna flop a bit for you guys, not because it’s bad but because it lacks a lot of that “in your face punch” and shock of the higher proofed allocated juices BT releases which I think adds to the glamour of the acquisition of a rarity. Undoubtedly a lot of the love for btacs is simply because it’s a btac (same for me) and value is in the eye of the beholder. My bro inlaw loves eagle rare and while it’s a decent sipper it’s always been kindof a one noter that falls short and a bit flat for me. I brought him some Russell’s 10 to try over the holiday and side by side he preferred the Russell’s within about 30 seconds. That’s not to say Russell’s 10 is super special or that eagle rare is bad by any means, OR that btacs aren’t good, but people want what they can’t have and that scarcity adds a placebo effect. Having said that I would certainly buy an ER 17 if available whenever I saw it. I’m glad you guys finally got your hands on one, a confirmation for me as our palates align quite frequently.
I have not seen Eagle Rare in our part of the country since before the pandemic! It is rare. Our state has lotteries and the current one has only 1 bottle of Eagle Rare for the entire state!!! 😱
Eagle Rare is very good for the price... except that Liquor Store employees in Pennsylvania are NOT allowed to buy it ANY allocated bourbon until 2 days after it hits the stores. We see it roughly every 4 to 6 weeks and it lasts about an hour. So... we NEVER get to buy it anymore basically. Which in my opinion is an Insult to us store workers who enjoy good bourbon.
This was one of the lottery drawings here in Pennsylvania for $119, but I wasn't picked for it... however, I did hit the Stagg for $54 that I was pretty excited about. I'm waiting for it to ship yet, but I can't wait to try it
Eagle Rare 10 year are basically single barrels. They just don’t clear the lines from one barrel to the next. That’s why it can be different bottle by bottle. Great review and perspective, as always.
@@fredfebbriello023 In the interview I saw with their master distiller at the bottling line… That is exactly what he said. Because of production demands… they don’t have time to clear the lines between barrels. So they don’t label it single barrel anymore. But basically they dump it one barrel at a time. But it’s not a blend.🤷♂️👍🥃
@@LeatherDaddy97, I've recently heard, too, that - contrary to common word of mouth - it's actually a small batch. People saying it's a small batch seem to have good source(s) for that info.
I've had ER10 at MSRP twice here in Northern IL and its okay to me. I'll never pay over MSRP for ER10. I would like to try the ER17, but I highly doubt here in IL, I'll ever find it for close to MSRP.
I just went back to look at my first bottle of Eagle Rare 10 review from July 2019 and shocked myself to find out I paid $26 back then. My how things have changed!
It’s $29 at Walmart here in FL. They get it every few months. For that price it’s great. It’s essentially a single barrel so flavor does very. I wouldn’t pay $75... but I have spent $75 on bottles of other bourbon that turned out worse than good ER.
Off topic question: bulleit is one of the very few bourbons I dislike, so does that mean I’d probably dislike their rye? Or are they totally different?
5:48 jokes on you I live in a controlled state where you need to win the lottery to be able to buy it. No waiting in line for hours just disappointment that I’ll never be able to get one
Not sure if the Eagle Rare I got sitting on my bar is just a bad one, but it has a horrid aftertaste and I do not like it anyway, neat, on rocks, in an old fashioned, I've tried it all
I've enjoyed ER 10. The problem is their consistency. I haven't bought one in over 5 years because the last one was so dusty and bitter with its' heavy tea notes.
I summarized the video: Tasters Two tasters are involved in this tasting session. Whiskeys Tasted Eagle Rare 10-Year Bourbon Price: Approximately $40-$45 Distillery: Buffalo Trace Notes: Nose: Cherry notes, somewhat medicinal but not unpleasant. Taste: Oak, vanilla, brown sugar, and prominent cherry notes. Finish: The cherry note is described as similar to a Luden's cough drop. Eagle Rare 17-Year Bourbon (2023 release, aged 19 years and 3 months) Proof: 101 proof Notes: Nose: Rich oak, molasses, not overly sweet. Taste: Dominant rich oak flavor, brown sugar, vanilla, black cherry, slight peppery note. Finish: The tasters noted it as rich and deep, with a dark cherry profile. Tasters' Preferences One taster preferred the Eagle Rare 10-Year for its sweeter profile. Another taster expressed a preference for the Eagle Rare 17-Year, appreciating its complexity and depth. Overall Impressions The Eagle Rare 10-Year was appreciated for its balance of sweet and oak flavors, with a standout cherry note. The Eagle Rare 17-Year was noted for its rich oakiness and complexity, appealing to those who enjoy a more matured profile. The tasters highlighted the importance of bottle variation and the impact of aging on flavor profiles. There was a discussion comparing Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC) releases with other high-end bourbons, like Pappy Van Winkle, with a preference for BTAC in some cases.

Made an old fashioned with ER 10 the other night, used Kurt’s video on how to make one too, it was really good!
Great bottle!!! My number one pick this year.
I don’t remember if you’ve done this or not, but… I would be curious to see a video with WT101 where you have a bottle half full, one 3/4 empty and a fresh crack. Leave the opened ones sit closed for a couple of months before doing the head to head to head.
Just looked online and secondary on the 17 year is $1500 - $2500. What a great find for $125
They have a raffle at my local store for a chance of one of these antiques! Wish me luck! Great video!
Good luck!
ER 10 is a good gateway bourbon. Still $40 ish in Atlanta. I keep it stocked in my collection especially for first drinkers.
Are the bottles in Atlanta good?? Bought a couple bottles here in Texas last month sorta muted and low on taste/flavor high on astringency.
@@Roodmfg they are good. No complaints
I've been in that store a few times and I've never seen Harry in there...I need to meet him lol
60 bucks (10year) in South Florida when you can find it. Nice video by the way.
Must be nice to have ER17 available at MSRP, Harry sells a bleep ton of Fireball!
I’ll be looking for a BTAC this weekend. This was very helpful.
Love you guys, great vids, good quality, 100% honest.
When it comes to the allocated bottles, do you ask for them or do you wait for them to be offered to you?
Always ask if you are hunting the allocated stuff….
That's a hell of a score. They released some EHT BP around me and people were camping out a full 24 hours prior.
Love Eagle Rare 10 year. Very good stuff. Would love to try the 17 year.
One of my favorite bourbons!
Would you buy it at $1000+?
I'd like to find one and try it😂 I've never seen one in the wild. Can you introduce me to Harry?😂
You guys are just great love this channel.
Off topic but its funny Trent doesnt like scotch but loves rye. The rye spice is similar to light peat to me
Tbf, most scotches arent peated. Its probably something else he dislikes
This was one of the lottery drawings here in Pennsylvania for $119, but I wasn't picked for it... however, I did hit the Stagg for $54 that I was pretty excited about. I'm waiting for it to ship yet, but I can't wait to try it
Did they charge your card yet? I won the Russell's 13, but I have not received the shipping email confirmation nor have they charged my card yet.
Only 1 bottle of eagle rare was available to the entire state of Pennsylvania
@@mattyingling9020 I know, how ridiculous is that lol
@@KyleBrown-ie6pw I just got the email mine has shipped today 12/6... figured I'd give you the heads up
What is a fair secondary price for ER17? Videos are always entertaining !!!!
Depends entirely on the person. I wouldnt go a penny over 150 for any of them.
thanks sounds good
@@LeatherDaddy97
that bottle of eagle rare you have is 2 labels ago! how old is that baby?
Eagle Rare 10 year are basically single barrels. They just don’t clear the lines from one barrel to the next. That’s why it can be different bottle by bottle. Great review and perspective, as always.
Apparently that might be a myth
@@LeatherDaddy97 not from what I have seen from the Buffalo Trace videos they used to shoot weekly
@@fredfebbriello023
In the interview I saw with their master distiller at the bottling line…
That is exactly what he said.
Because of production demands… they don’t have time to clear the lines between barrels.
So they don’t label it single barrel anymore.
But basically they dump it one barrel at a time.
But it’s not a blend.🤷♂️👍🥃
@@BillMcGirr yeah ive heard conflicting info on it recently, at this point i have no idea
@@LeatherDaddy97,
I've recently heard, too, that - contrary to common word of mouth - it's actually a small batch.
Is there a link to the discord? Just jumping into the bourbon world and would love to learn more from this community.
I get Eagle Rare for $30 almost every time i visit my local store.
Off topic question: bulleit is one of the very few bourbons I dislike, so does that mean I’d probably dislike their rye? Or are they totally different?
Very different, the rye is made by mgp, the bourbon is a blend from multiple kentucky distilleries.
Thanks@@LeatherDaddy97
Northeast Jersey over here...local store has eagle rare 10 for $80!! And 17 year for.........$2200.00!!!! Is it worth that??!
5:48 jokes on you I live in a controlled state where you need to win the lottery to be able to buy it. No waiting in line for hours just disappointment that I’ll never be able to get one
ER 10 is my fav bourbon!!
I really enjoyed my first bottle of Eagle Rare. Unfortunately, the second bottle wasn't nearly as good.
Like it...see you on the Live Stream 🥃 Cheers
I have seen ER at $32 at the lowest and $45 at the highest, all within a 5 mile radius. It's probably in my top 3 at the $30 to $40 price point.
It's $75 here 😢.. that's why I won't buy it lol.. its worth about $35-$45
I have seen it in san Antonio for as much as $100 to $120😮
@clydekimsey7503 heavens to Betsy that's way too much for the 10 year.
@@BoozeandNewswithTimandDut plus, it's rarely in stores here
@@BoozeandNewswithTimandDut - $32 or $45. I have spent quite a bit more on a 10 year.
What a great video! thanks
BT mash #1 is most likely the same as Dickel (the closest they've ever said was less than 10% rye)
Trenton and Kurton with that BTAC energy!
What is MSRP for the ER 17?
Not sure if the Eagle Rare I got sitting on my bar is just a bad one, but it has a horrid aftertaste and I do not like it anyway, neat, on rocks, in an old fashioned, I've tried it all
If ER10 was not allocated, it would be on everyone’s top 5 list for under $50 and the chorus would say “it punches above its price”
I've enjoyed ER 10. The problem is their consistency. I haven't bought one in over 5 years because the last one was so dusty and bitter with its' heavy tea notes.
40 or 50 bucks?? Hell I can’t find it on the shelf and I live in Kentucky.
I summarized the video:
Tasters
Two tasters are involved in this tasting session.
Whiskeys Tasted
Eagle Rare 10-Year Bourbon
Price: Approximately $40-$45
Distillery: Buffalo Trace
Notes:
Nose: Cherry notes, somewhat medicinal but not unpleasant.
Taste: Oak, vanilla, brown sugar, and prominent cherry notes.
Finish: The cherry note is described as similar to a Luden's cough drop.
Eagle Rare 17-Year Bourbon (2023 release, aged 19 years and 3 months)
Proof: 101 proof
Notes:
Nose: Rich oak, molasses, not overly sweet.
Taste: Dominant rich oak flavor, brown sugar, vanilla, black cherry, slight peppery note.
Finish: The tasters noted it as rich and deep, with a dark cherry profile.
Tasters' Preferences
One taster preferred the Eagle Rare 10-Year for its sweeter profile.
Another taster expressed a preference for the Eagle Rare 17-Year, appreciating its complexity and depth.
Overall Impressions
The Eagle Rare 10-Year was appreciated for its balance of sweet and oak flavors, with a standout cherry note.
Can you explain what you mean by it drinks its proof?
it means it tastes like the proof that it is. if it drinks under its proof, it would taste weaker than its proof
LUV !! EAGLE rare , gona look for thT 17 yr.
I went to high school with a guy 30 years ago, him and his brothers shaved their heads one summer, he was already balding at 17 yrs old, his hair never grew back, you might want to reconsider Kurt
Wish they would bump Eagle Rare up to at least 100 proof. Cheers!🥃
ER17 is soooo yummy. Also it does surprisingly well in blinds against stuff that’s higher proof
I get grape big league chew on older bottles of eagle rare
Love Eagle Rare and would love to try the 17
I need to try Eagle Rare 17 Year. 🥃
I’m from northern Michigan by traverse city I’ve never seen eagle rare
Easy to see y'all had buyers remorse
Would love to snag btac yet!
Bald is beautiful. Been shaving for 25 years.
I love seeing you guys try the rare stuff like this, but I appreciated it more when you guys used to hunt your own bottles.
Eagle rare is still one of the best values if you can find it.
