Of these, I haven't had the Hancock, but ER is my favorite of the other 4. I drink more BT than the rest combined. I have Weller Green just collecting dust. May need to open one to revisit.
Hard for me to get weller anything up here in WI. But I travel for work just enough that I'm able to get SR, found a 107 near Detroit last year and have tasted a 12yr... Gotta say, a lot of the other Wellers are over rated and over hyped. i really really enjoy an ounce of SR once or twice a week.
Blinds help ground people. Removes the marketing and hype and makes you realize the bottle you dis is perfectly serviceable or the one you seek after isn’t worth the chase.
Totally agree, unless your name is TRENTON as when even after seeing how far down the list his 'favourite' bottle landed He still proclaimed that it's the best one and still his favourite, lol. Sometimes you can't see the obvious even when it's staring you in the face ! You can learn a lot from doing blinds and sometimes what we learn about ourselves is NOT what we thought it would be, maybe it's "I am just a Bottle Snob after all !"......Those damn fake bourgeoisie bottles will get you every time, eh Trenton, lol. I noticed that Kurt wasn't so bothered about where EH Taylor landed in the line up, man the guy just sips and says it as he sees it, no preconceptions, just taking names and spitting truth, a man whose humble opinion I always listen to and have learned to respect.
Blinds are fun, but not scientific. After a few sips, your palate is so influenced by what you had before it, not to mention your palate is constantly changing, or even blown out. Some pours also perform poorly because they lack certain notes that punch through, but on their own they have a lot of depth. Maker's Cellar Aged comes to mind in that regard. It has a subtle complexity and sophistication, but put up against most other things near its proof point, your palate favors the brashness of other pours.
@ completely agreed! Definitely not scientific. There are so many variables from what you ate that day, to how long the bottles have been open or just the comp of the blind. But the blind does remove at least the bias variable of hype. If you think you hate SR but it blinds consistently higher than maybe you bought into the hate. My favorite blind is to let ppl try Elmer vs BT and even with the different mashbills most can’t tell the difference or think one is better than the other. They are both just good decent bourbon and worth msrp only.
Would love to see blinds like this for all major distillers. Blind their core offerings and then maybe even do a final blind of all the winners to crown the best ore offering.
Would love to see an old fashioned tournament! Maybe put together a poll that people could vote on for their favorite from each distillery and then create a bracket from there. Could do 8 bourbons vs. 8 ryes. Whatever you guys come up with, I’d love to see it!
Blinds are always, in my opinion, allowing for more leveling of the playing field. One thing that is difficult to control for is the fact that our tongues and taste buds sometimes get overloaded and don't "release and reset" easily, such that the next expression you taste doesn't start with the same "clean slate". Think of it like a "lock and key". Sometimes the "keys" don't release from the "lock", to allow another "key" to fit it so you miss elements because previous "tastes" are in the way. As they say, "the good thing about opinions is that everyone has one." The other bias is also chasing the "shiny thing syndrome". It's so great to have options and resources to try many things.
I hosted my first two blinds recently. I borrowed from your channel- “overall sip experience”, that phrase is so great to include in a blind. Love the banter between you two. Always look forward to your videos, thanks for the laughs
I would have to put the new Bardstown Bourbon Co high wheat bourbon above OWA107 also. If you haven't tried it, it's really good, and 106 proof to somewhat match the Weller.
Guys. Seriously. Do more like this one. This is super helpful. I've had multiple bottles of all but the Hancock and would normally rank them EHT, ER10, WSR, and BT. But I have NEVER blinded them. That said, they're all good and I've repeatedly said that WSR is hard to beat at its price (which is ~ $32 USD where I shop). It's a very tasty, reliable, and approachable daily sipper and it does great duty in cocktails as well.
Trent, love when tour mom chooses the line up. Would love to see this same blind done again in 3 or 4 months and then compare the 2 blinds. It would be interesting to see if your palettes change with the seasons.
I've gotten into trying different whiskeys in an old fashioned and am with you, a solid rye cuts through the sweetness of the sugar, brings out some of that orange and pepper, and creates a great balance. I'd love to see an Old Fashioned show down.
After watching this, I did this same blind today (no Hancock) and it came exactly the same , and I was shook too! I really like EH taylor small batch so much so that I have to get shipped in $$$ and the WR is growing on the trees where I live , unbelievable!
Buffalo Trace was the first whiskey I drank neat like a grown up and didn't just shoot it lol. So it's got a special place in my heart. Fortunately, here in Oregon, they have boxes full of them all of the time.
The old fashion idea is awesome. Do separate ones for other drinks as well such as manhattans, ky mules, etc. I'm gonna have to try this myself since I have all available at this time. My guess would be EH Taylor, Eagle Rare, Weller then BT
Thank you for this blind. I always get ridiculed because I’ve never been a Buffalo Trace/Weller fan as far as profile and pricing are concerned. To me they aren’t any better than a lot of basic bourbons. Cheers 🥃
3 or 4 years ago when I first encountered eagle rare, I, like many, was impressed and sought out bottles. Being in Ohio we had to make trips to the distillery. When we finally got our hands on a couple bottles of our own after three visits, I took my first sip and was greatly unimpressed. It was only then that I learned eagle rare was a single barrel product. Having tasted most of the entry level bottles, and a few of the rarer offerings I can honestly say now that I wish the top tier were more available...Stagg Jr. and Antique 107 in particular. Really impressed. Just learned that a local fine dining establishment has the George T Stagg available to order at about $90 an ounce. 😱 So, like Kurt, I will continue to enjoy my consistent favorite, Rare Breed, which I recently heard was going to be offered. Non-chill filtered here in the US. Thanks for another great show!.
Great blind! I have typically been underwhelmed with BT products. Coincidentally, my first Buffalo Trace Bourbon was in an old fashioned. I have found that 1792 works very well for my taste. Last note… watched (listened) on my day off, while finishing some drywall.
Really enjoyed this blind. But was wondering if you could do the blinds Without knowing the products/bottles in the blind. I really think this knowledge influences a bit of the general results. The less your mind knows about the "Blind" the better. Please try. Would be very very interesting.
They don't know the bottle, only we do. They add the bottle in post production so we can see what they are tasting but they're still in the dark about it.
@@chasecook3854I think the original comment was asking for a double blind. Meaning they do not know which bottles are in the blind in front of them. Just knowing The distillery may have influenced their tasting.
I'm glad I'm not crazy! I've had almost every buffalo trace product and I was so excited last year to try EH Taylor for the first time and I had the exact same reaction that you guys did in this blind. I remember thinking that the front end was okay but the mid and back half of the pallet really fell off and I couldn't believe how disappointing it was. I thought I was crazy and that my pallet must be completely jacked up 😂
@ oh yeah. The norm. 2oz rye, 1/2oz cane sugar simple syrup, 4 dashes angostura bitters, 2 luxardo cherries with a bit of the juice, and a splash of Grand Marnier.
I don’t know what happened. But somehow I love each of the Buffalo Trace allocated bottles and even their regular Buffalo Trace bottle. Their mash builds are right in line with my pallet apparently.
We're all different, and even bottles vary, but I did my own test, substituting Blantons for Hancock. My results: 1. Eagle Rare 2. EH Taylor 3. Weller SR 4. Blantons 5. Buffalo Trace I was surprised, but I'm leaning towards blinds focused on choosing favorites being unfair. I struggle choosing sometimes, for good reason. They may all be good, and tomorrow, your ranking may change based on a multitude of factors.
Gotta love the original BT. I’ve always loved Weller too. I’ve only ever been able to find the Special Reserve for purchase. Full Proof is fantastic too
Buffalo Trace is my favorite. I love Buffalo Trace (got me drinking bourbon), Weller, and Eagle Rare. Blanton's is also awesome. The standard Buffalo Trace is under $30 and you can't beat it. My favorite drink is an Old Fashioned and you can't beat Buffalo Trace in it. And Weller is my top!!
Good review. Would like to have seen Elmer T Lee in this line-up too. And, btw, I got my only bottle of Hancock Reserve at a store in Indy about a year ago. I tried it. M’eh.
My favorite old fashion is with a Old Forester Rye, Sagamore Rye,or Knob Creek Rye - I usually use simple syrup made 1:1 with water and a fresh wild honey and it is fantastic
Eagle Rare has been my favorite bourbon for years ... fortunately it is easily obtainable in my area. I found a store pick single barrel of Buffalo Trace last year that was terrific, though ... if you ever run across one, its worth the extra few dollars they want for it.
Would love to see the old fashioned bracket! Also would like to see some Benchmarks blinded with other Buffalo Trace products. I think the Benchmark Single Barrel beats standard Buffalo Trace hands down.
I love the old fashioned bracket idea! Usually I gravitate towards rye to get a balance of sweet/spice in the cocktail but I'm still searching for something that's a good mix of affordable, holds up to ice, and isn't too sweet. Eagle Rare would win today's blind for me 👍
@@tpdtopcop2010 pikesville rye was the first I tried with it because it was not a good sipper for me. It really held up well to ice and sugar. Other cheaper ones I like is wild turkey 101 or old forester 100 rye. Old grandad 114 is a high rye bourbon that is also awesome in an old fashioned.
👍🏼👍🏼 definitely an old-fashioned bracket styled battle would be awesome! Old-fashioned are my favorite and I absolutely love trying all my different whiskeys in them and yes, it’s very surprising how different they can all be even using the same ingredients.
I was just at Buffalo Trace yesterday and I picked up a bottle of EH Taylor, because that is what they had. Now, when we tasted, I wasn't impressed with the EH Taylor, but I attributed much of that to the plastic cups. EDIT: I just tasted it (putting aside some other drama related to the bottle)... it was much better than yesterday's taste. They're really doing themselves a disservice with the plastic cups... but I know why they're doing it. I got that corn starchy cotton candy note, which was good... and then on the finish... and it was a while later... I got a rich butterscotch note. Nothing like what I would normally call butterscotch which would be a hint of a butterscotch candy. This was more like a thick butterscotch pudding... but only in the lingering finish.
Would you both be willing to give your top 5 distilleries? I think that would help for people wanting to try other bourbons outside overly hyped products from Buffalo Trace. As a newbie, I know it would help me. Thanks! Also, would love to see the Old Fashioned competition!!!
Have you guys done a video that includes the Benchmark series from Buffalo Trace? Those are some banger budget pours. The Full Proof and the Single Barrel can be really good.

Blinds are tough because your pallet is affected by so many different flavors bottle to bottle. I have drank through a few bottles of all but the Hancock. If they were all on the shelf readily available at MSRP, I would likely take the ER first, EHT, Weller, BT, then Hancock. Between the ER and EHT, I've felt the ER has a more full, flavorful taste. Cherry, Leather, tobacco. The EHT seemed lighter and less flavorful. But there IS something to be said about knowing the label.....its rarity and its age........Here I laid out my lineup and i KNOW that rarity and ease of location skewed my selection! Cheers to keeping it blind!
Throw a Weller Full Proof in place of the Hancock....these are all so similar and all considered lower proof...you guys like the complexity of the higher proof bourbons. Good video...I have not had the Hancock but really enjoy the other four of these...but I also prefer the higher proof.
I get it - EHT Small Batch can really vary. My first bottle was so mediocre I had no idea why it was so hyped when I preferred regular BT to it. Then sometime later my friend bought me a bottle of the EHT small batch that was outstanding.
Yes to the old fashioned challenge! Also rye in OF makes total sense, since that same concept works well in a manhattan. Guess I know what I’m having tonight
Not a big Buffalo Trace fan but probably Eagle Rare. I use rye in about 60% of my Old Fashioned’s. But I cheat and use Woodford syrup, and sometimes add spiced cherry bitters.

Weller Antique 107 is my favorite. I finally found a wheated bourbon that beats Weller Antique 107: Holladay Soft Red Wheat Rickhouse Proof.
As a fan of wheated Bourbons as well as a Missouri native, I love seeing all of the Holladay hype. It's really good stuff.

Not only these the same distillery they are also the same mash bill except for the Weller.
Rye in an old fashion is excellent.

Benchmark single barrel is one of the top BT core lineup in my opinion.
Old Fashioned bracket is brilliant
Nice blind! Seems like wheated bourbons do really well in your blinds. Cheers
High west double rye makes a very nice old fashion!
I get it - EHT Small Batch can really vary. My first bottle was so mediocre I had no idea why it was so hyped when I preferred regular BT to it. Then sometime later my friend bought me a bottle of the EHT small batch that was outstanding.
Sounds like you have your bourbon madness competition theme! Old fashioneds!
Yes to the old fashioned challenge!
Also rye in OF makes total sense, since that same concept works well in a manhattan. Guess I know what I’m having tonight
Would have been interesting to see some Benchmark in here! Full proof and single barrel might do better than even some of these!
Not a big Buffalo Trace fan but probably Eagle Rare. I use rye in about 60% of my Old Fashioned’s. But I cheat and use Woodford syrup, and sometimes add spiced cherry bitters.
Great whiskeys for opening the night! They all make fantastic old fashioned, but you do have to adjust the sweetener down and the bourbon up.
Would love to see an old fashioned bracket!
