This procedire only works on pdfs that have actual text. If the pdf is made of pictures, then you get a blank result. To get the text from pictures you need to use an OCR (Optical Chracter Recognition) application such as Tesseract OCR.

Thank you, Anson. However, like many others, I've tried this several times on a couple of PDF files, just to be sure I hadn't made some mistake, but this failed to work for me, too. The steps just resulted in a blank RTF file. Could there be something about the original PDFs that hasn't been taken into account here? Is this advice obsolete because of recent changes to either/both Adobe Acrobat and Automator?

I did it and it both worked and didn't work. The one that didn't work was pencil written words that I took a photo and made into a PDF. The one with the actual type written words. Perhaps there is something in this.

Didn't work for me, either. I also got a blank rtf file. Seems like most of us are having the same problem. What's your take on this?

It worked for me.. but try all these things: First go to System preferences and change Security & Privacy / select Privacy Tab, and check "Automator" to be allowed to control computer. This will allow it to choose the correct fonts. Add "Copy Finder Items" to prevent corrupting original doc. Add "Apply Quartz Filter to PDF Document"... Worked fine for me, with a complete 849-page PDF Google-book of James Joyce' Finnegans Wake to a RichText File, downloaded to my SmartPhone, which it can now can read to me with text-to-voice app via a bluetooth speaker.. Imagine how that makes me feel!!!

I applied your instructions to a income tax form .pdf and they worked as described in the video, but the end result wasn't any different than when I Select All + Copy + Pasted the original file to a TextEdit file. Still, I did learn something today.
