I have arthritis and fibromyalgia, and am an avid crocheter and knitter. I find I have to take regular breaks to stretch and massage my hands, otherwise besides being painful, it can also affect the quality of the knitting or crocheting, and the gauge. I often use cold therapy and soaking to relieve pain and swelling. Like you, I don’t think stopping is the solution. We just need to adjust our practice and not over do things. Losing such a joyful hobby, would be worse than the pain. I hope your video encourages others to continue to do the things they love. Thanks for sharing💕

Thank you so much for sharing how you deal with some of the same pains that I have. I totally agree with you that if I had to give up what I love to do that would have been the most painful thing ever. I never realize that so many people we're going through the same thing until I put the video out. I am so glad know that maybe this video will uplift and encourage people to continue to find a way to do what they love. May God bless you and all that you do💝

I started feeling pain on my right thumb one day after knitting consistently for one or two weeks. I was knitting my first sweater and I was so excited to finish it! The doctors still don't really know what it is, thankfully not rheumatoid arthritis, but I did have to take a break from knitting. I was really scared I would never knit or crochet again, but your video gives me hope! Thank you!

My arthritis has stopped me from knitting ,now, for two years. I can't hold my favourite dpn to knit socks ...I was devastated. I went from making a pair of socks every few days to only 2 pairs all last winter! That's when I discovered I could still crochet! From May to September, I have made 6 afghans using ergonomic hooks! You are so right on! Never give up! I'm over 70 and my hands are gnarly! I will never give up my craft! I usually soak my hands while I do the dishes! I have been known to save washing up until my hands are aching! Waste not! Lol! I sleep with braces on my left wrist for carpal tunnel as well. Parts wear out and the warranties are off!

I have ankylosing spondylitis, carpal tunnel, osteoarthritis in which all of them are autoimmune diseases. I know how you feel because long periods of crocheting causes them to flare up. I take Enbrel. Everything you say they wanted to do to you, I’ve had done to me and you’re right none of those things work…I.e. steroid injections, the electrodes under my skin leaving knots under my skin, and physical therapy with no relief. This video is helpful. Thanks for sharing🙏🏽🥰🙌🏽💪🏽✨

I wear compression gloves whenever I crochet or craft, but like you they don't always help, so I just have to stop and rest. 8 years ago at the end of this month, I will celebrate another year with Multiple Sclerosis. Thankfully, I was diagnosed because of a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) that wasn't getting better. Since we caught the MS early, I have been fortunate enough to remain "proactive" instead of "reactive." I am happy to report that I am still able to walk and move normally (for now). However, I COMPLETELY understand the emotional journey you experienced! I used to type in my job in the past as well, I play the piano and I have been crocheting for decades now. I have also recently picked back up knitting after learning new techniques that have drastically made things easier for me than what I was initially taught! While my hands haven't been a major issue yet, I know that there is a HIGH probability that I will have to deal with it in the future. I still appreciate your recommendations to file in my "for future use" information just in case. ;) I've been experiencing 2 other issues with my crochet & knitting that I wasn't expecting.
    1) My eyes! I didn't get glasses until my MS diagnosis. Ironically, it's not because I need them to see better, but to help reduce my eye strain when my eyes get tired. Most of the time I don't think about wearing them, but I have noticed that I'm getting to the point now where I HAVE to wear them to do ANY yarn work at all! I will probably eventually loose the ability to crochet doilies (simply because I can't see the small stitches), but I know that I will always be able to crochet blankets out of chunky yarn if nothing else! :) So, I make sure to take breaks where I close my eyes to let them rest after doing several rows to keep my eye fatigue in check.
    2) My energy levels! When I have days where I am dealing with fatigue, I spend the whole day in bed. You don't think about the amount of energy you use when you are doing yarn work, but when you don't feel well, you realize VERY QUICKLY how much energy it really does take! This has taught me 2 lessons: a) I need to remember to pace myself. If I start to feel tired, I put it down for awhile. Sometimes I can pick it up again later, sometimes I only get to do a row or two. As frustrating as that is, I've learned that it's OK! :) b) I no longer estimate how long it will take me to get a project finished in the same way I used to. This can also be SUPER frustrating when you have something you are making as a gift for a birthday and/or holiday, but, once again, it's OK! If I plan ahead for having bad days and accept that it may take me 2 to 3 times as long to finish something as it used to, I'm typically able to get the project finished on time without feeling too much stress about the timeframe. Plus, if I get the project finished early, even better! :D
Sorry I got a bit long winded....I come from generations of "story tellers," so it's hard for me to keep things short sometimes. ;) Thank you so very much for sharing your story! Sometimes, we may not share the same issues, but just knowing that there is someone else out there who has struggled with challenges and found ways to overcome them can help give hope and inspiration to others to keep going and not give up! May the Lord continue to bless you with the health, courage and passion you need to keep enjoying life and this AWESOME hobby.

I cannot tell you how much I really appreciate you sharing your story as well. Don't worry about towing a long story because I enjoy them. I am so happy to know that you are still able to do your crafts. I plan to record either tonight or tomorrow a follow-up to crocheting with arthritis. I will definitely be mentioning most of the people who have left me their stories. Thank you so much because I had no idea that I was not alone. I look forward to hearing how your projects are going. Feel free to drop me a line any time because just like people say that I have encouraged them, stories like yours keep me going. May God continue to bless and favor you and all that you do

Thanks for your video. I don't have (Rheumatoid) arthritis but something else and the steroid injection helped me almost instantly. (They're bad but I love me some steroids.) I also had sessions with a hand therapist who gave me exercises to do at home three times a day permanently. Some are to be done with (inexpensive) exercise material. It's been three, four years and I've not had any problems since. Praying for your hand health...

Hi Shonya! I hope I’m spelling that correctly, I went off of another comment 😊. Thank you for this video. You popped up just when I needed as I’m preparing to do my first farmers market table (at 62 years young 😂). I use some braces and always thought the one with the thumb guard would hinder me but looks like it doesn’t. I LOVE those little blue single finger thingy’s. I definitely will be getting some. I definitely need to soak and would use some Epsom salts and lotion with magnesium. Your tips and tricks are so easy. I take a lot of notes as well with my Bible study so my neck/upper back has issues as well. I’m so encouraged. I hope you are still finding the joy in crochet 2 years after this video. I just subscribed and look forward to viewing other videos.🙏🏻😊🦋

      Happy Sunday! 🌄
Thank you for your feedback. I am so happy for you as you prepare for your first farmers market event. That sounds exciting 😀 The braces with the thumbs are great. I think it depends on the maker of those braces. I am literally sitting here crocheting with the blue finger stints on. It really helps a lot. I too have the same issue when I'm reading with my neck and shoulders which aggravates the cervical stenosis in my neck and then leads down to my hands. There's a lot of things that can be done that are inexpensive but it does take a lot of trial and error too. Nevertheless, God provided a way for me to continue with the talent He has given me and so here I am sharing with others. So the old saying that goes where there's a will, there's a way. Especially if it's God's will, there's definitely a way for sure! 🥰 I hope you have much success at the farmers market. Thank you for watching and subscribing! 💚

This is self diagnosed from Google of course lol. On a whim I decided to see if anybody had any videos out there for relief and found yours. I bought a thumb stabilizer a couple of hours after I watched. I also dug out my compression gloves that didn't seem to help with carpal tunnel issues when I bought them a few years back. Crocheting has actually helped me regain loss of muscle mass in my hands which means less pain. I do stretch daily and only crochet if my hands aren't flared up.

I deal with thumb, wrist, elbow, and basically my arms and hands killing me because of the same reasons. Larger crochet handles and longer hook, help a lot. Yours looks like 5.5 inch type. Try a 6 inch hook. The one thing that helps quickly but pricey investment but lasts a long time is magnesium lotion from Jordans Essentials. Only sold by reps in your area. I deal with chronic pain and cannot taje anything with nasids anymore because of additional problems I developed from using them. My experience is this very little of it this lotion works very quickly for me. It's worth trying. I hope it helps you if you try it. I was amazed at the speed relief was felt. Even scripted pain medication wouldn't touch it. Don't know why it helps but it truly does.
