- Is it worth ECU remapping your Defender Puma engine and what are the improvements and BHP and torque gains over standard on a 2.2 and 2.4L? What is the best remap for the Land Rover Defender? For me it’s Empire Tuning who are leading the way with making Defenders far more enjoyable to drive. It’s made a massive difference and now makes the Defender even more enjoyable and usable in every situation whether that’s on motorways or off road.
I would highly recommend getting your Defender remapped using Empire Tuning. There are other remaps available but some are questionable and if its not done correctly can actually risk damaging your engine.

I have a defender 2.4 puma. No issues with the clutch at all, gears are not long or difficult and a Defender is so easy to drive. I simply don't get the whingefest on a Defender, they are so forgiving to drive. I always say, just do the gear changes in slow motion and you will be fine. Stage 1 is as much as anyone will ever need.
Did you do the stage 1 for your puma 2.4 ? I am about to, is it a mad difference mate ?

How is the reliabilty on yours?
I am absolutely torn between defenders and like land cruisers
I live in South African and want to do some heavy overlanding into Botswana and further- so reliabilty freaks me out
Mine has been very reliable since getting the initial bits fixed that the dealer missed. They will do huge miles without issues if you find a good one and maintain it well.
You're driving a Defender, it's a 4WD. 1st gear is brilliantly SHORT (not long) and I love it. It rides like it does because it's a 4WD and has live axles and a ladder frame chassis.
I have a 110 like yours 2013, 2.2. Your exhaust sounds so aggressive. Does the remap change the sound at all? Or have installed a straight pipe? Cheers
The exhaust is standard on mine, has always just sounded like that!
Is there any issues with passing emissions on your MOT after a remap?

Not normally just from a remap. Best to check with whichever company you're planning to use, and what remap/additional things you're going for.
Nice videos ! I’ve had my 2.2 90 remapped by Twisted plus K&N air filter and straight through stainless exhaust from the DPF. WOW. Total transformation circa 170bhp I’m on standard springs and no ABS so when you push on it’s close to its limits before having to upgrade these other components. If Land Rover did a GTI !
Thanks! Yes it makes a huge difference doing those mods doesn't it, brings the car alive. But like you say, don't want to be going much more than that on bhp without upgrading the other components next. Proper handful otherwise!

What’s your thoughts on them ?
They're growing on me, but very expensive and they'll depreciate like any other new motor. If you can live with the quirks then it's always got to be the 'original' Defender.

What would you choose between a 2.4 or a 2.2, Puma and why?
Probably the 2.2 because it's the newer engine and can still be tuned to give decent power.
2.2 all day, the 2.4 produces fantastic torque with one our remaps but the 2.2 does that as well but is alot more refined and responsive throughout the rev range
Are you run your car with the stock clutch?
Was not a problem to remap it?
Yes the clutch in mine is stock and has been fine

After remap did the black smoke come out?
No, although you can get the black smoke from mapping tweaks but it's on the older engines, and why anyone would want that is beyond me.

So what’s the sort of £ for s stage two ?
For a stage 2, in addition to the remap you'll be looking at also upgrading the intercooler, potentially going over to a hybrid turbo, performance exhaust, etc. which would easily be £1000+ at that point.
My TD5 has had a previous remap. So SS exhaust fitted , egr blanked and intercooler upgrade. Recently had a new TD5 installed and turbo. So trying to get an idea of the remapping. But prices I’ve seen vary hugely
Bet that shifts already! Yeah I'd imagine you would benefit from a custom remap, Gareth at Empire would no doubt be able to set yours up/finish it off perfectly. He was telling me about the amount of Defenders he'd done that already had a remap on them which had been 'questionable' beforehand. It's not the cheapest remap out there, but then it's not your regular 'off the shelf' remap either, so it's 100% worth the extra in my opinion.
@@al-s When Ive sme folders tucked away I shall pick it up and see what the options are. Meanwhile, I had best get on with fixing down the bits trying to fall off :-)

Just done my 2.4. EGR delete, de-cat, speed restriction lifted and a minor re-map 30hp more. Sounds nicer and has made enough difference to make it worth while. And it's not thirstier.
