You may think that Hammond daily drives his Mustang, or even his lockdown Tesla Model X. But if you have watched the first episode of his new show on discovery+, you'll know that he kicks about in something much more agricultural. And like all daily drivers, it has started to accumulate a frightening amount of Hammond-family detritus. Expect to see a lot of this car on the channel in the coming weeks!

That's not a closet. That's a Land Rover shaped full size shed. Park it in any big city and it becomes a house and you can rent it when you're not driving.

Unexpectedly, this is Richard Hammond's tour of his wardrobe vs. a review of his Defender.
Everyday tools, a fresh change of clothes if something unfortunate happens, tools, some nice shoes tucked under the seats, more tool, tools in bags (the fancy ones), power tools in plastic boxes and some basics as post it notes pens etc. but generally once a week an overhaul is needed to at least have a welcoming interior even if it doesn't last.
My father has a 2021 Toyota Tacoma and he refers to it as his “mobile office.” So naturally filled with papers, various tools, and an ipad

my dad has a 08 Tahoe LTZ and he has so many tools in there its crazy. man could build, break and fix an entire car with the stuff in there, but its all clean. literally everything is clean. hes crazy

If it ever gets broken into that's a lot of money gone. We still empty the trucks of anything worth more than 25 quid if we're away from it for more than 6hrs.

Judging from Drivetribe and his own shows, I'd say James is easily the most up-to-date and modern of the three. He could probably de- and re-assemble the steam carriage while explaining how it works, but if you had not fallen asleep by then you'd see him drive off in a hydrogen car... :D

My Daily car is a Peugeot 107.
The backseats are folded down for more space. I need the space for Jackets,hats,towels,blankets,yoga mat,waterbottles, books,toolsbag,shoes in the front there is space for Cds,facemasks,soap,charger cables,shoes and socks, toy cars and cuddle toys as decoration...
And yes if its needed there is even space for passengers 😅.
I love my car and everything i need probably is in there. 🤷♀️

Those old defenders are the most useful utilitarian cars ever made. Simple, easy to fix, rugged, practical, 4wd! Excellent Landrover really missed out on a giant market by not selling these anymore.

They were only selling about 20,000 cars a year towards the end of production sadly. They are legendary, even so.
now they arm for the more upmarket, making it look like every suv on the market.

I'd like to imagine that Toyota looked and the Defender's potential and went "Hmm, I think they're on to something, lets make it more palletable to the mass market.", hence the undying versatility of the 4Runner.

I still love the fact that they are still going,even after the end of their era of Top Gear
Their greatest creation was themselves as a trio. No matter how mediums may change or companies may pivot, they will always have themselves and their passion to offer. That's special.

Bollocks. You don't have to be a slob as a daily driver. That is a personal behavior/hygiene/lazy mentality state of being that a lot of people excuse themselves from in order to feel like they are well prepared on a daily commute. The type of person that does that is rather insecure. "I am too busy to keep my vehicle organized and tidy" 🙄 It is a personal choice to live/drive that way. As a single driver, I never had anything look like that. When I carried 2-4 passengers with me on a frequent basis, it never looked like that. There was 1 time my vehicle looked like a trash pick up vehicle, and that is because I literally emptied out a totaled out vehicle for a female friend that could not get back to her wreck. I had 3/30 gallon sized tidy bags loaded along with grocery bags and misc. other loose items packed into my 4runner. Took me over an hour to go through her 3rd Gen. 4Runner clearing it out! I found things in there she thought she had lost months before! Was awful.

A Landrover is a lot, one of those a mobile shed, but beautiful? No. It never has been beautiful, and never will be.
My daily Land Rover is usually similarly messy. Add muddy boots, volunteer firefighter gear and delete the merchandise boxes. It's also usually muddy on the outside, because my gravel driveway is not as immaculate as Richard's.
Hopefully he doesn't have to take his daughters shopping again. They won't talk to him sadly🙁

Drive everyday and I keep my car as clean as possible. Take out trash, put stuff away and clean it regularly. Yes, I'm one to also unpack my bags once I get home from traveling abroad...
I bought a Miata as my daily and it fills up faster than an office trash can. The problem started solving itself the other day when a mcdonalds bag flew out the car when I had the top down.

Mine just has gum in the glove box, water bottles in the doors and a flashlight in the console, very clean

My car is always clean, I have a few carefully selected items that I carry along but they are always nicely kept in the boot.

For those of you who don’t know, Richard Hammond has been killing it late lately.
My Land Rover is similar.
Apart from the permanent stuff like a recovery kit, tool box, spanner set, cordless drill, air compressor, box of oils, box of what nots, I also have clothes, shoes, work boots, safety helmet, stationery, chargers etc in my Landy all the time!

We use full-size pickups this way in the U.S. I love my truck.
I have a 2015 Chey Silverado 1500 I use the exact same way Richard uses his Defender for the struggle is real lol
I keep a small paint brush to keep the air vents free of dust and perfectly aligned.

I daily drove an mx-5 for a while. It only contained an ice scraper for the windows, a lifehammer and the owners manual. That filled up all the storage space I had. It was great!

I’ve got a Land Rover Series 3 88” 1980…….My everyday car is a Peugeut 307 2005. My girlfriend calls it “a floating garbage island” 😎 But I have to keep stuff somewhere ! You never know when you”ll need it. And I have 45 minutes to work and live in a forest. So why can’t I keep my chainsaw in it - just in case !
My daily driver is immaculate because everything is hidden. I've got loads of things in my center console like a box of tissues, camera, napkins, eating utensils, reflective vest, etc. In the frunk I've got my charging cable, reflective triangles, med kit, tire inflator. Gallon jug of water in the trunk. Probably 50-100 individual items if were to lay everything out. But somebody just peeking inside would think it was a rental car.
Well, I daily a BMW e39, so it has coolant, oil, a spare upper radiator hose (yes I have used the spare before), jumper cables, a toolkit, cold weather gear, a blanket and the remnants of my desk junk drawer.
I too have a land rover 110 thats going through the same treatment. Every sinse rebuilding/upgrading it all I have done is go from one side of the country to another with it towing something. The thing never stops working hard! And the back is now full of recovery equipment 🤣
Well, I drive a Land Rover too (but it's a Freelander 2 though), and mine is quite tidier I'm afraid... even if the booth is full with my bags (off road recovery kit, civil protection uniforms and equipment trolley, EMT first responder's bag, magnetic reflective battenberg graphics and emergency LED beacon). ;)
Are u telling us the only things you wera are: overalls, barbour jackets and the occasionnal fleece?
I can relate.
I keep a fleece and a waterproof in the car in case of breakdown on a cold and/or wet road, a brolly that needs replacing, a note pad, pen, chewing gum, engine oil (my car drinks the stuff, had it checked over, nothing wrong, apparently M52TÜs have a tendency to burn oil), microfibre cloths, and some CDs, in case my blutooth decides not to work
As I live in my van, it’s definitely more equipped than yours.
Haha. Try driving a Jeep Gladiator with an Alucab canopy and being a mountain biker, hiker, kayaker and offroader and keeping everything for all that (including the mountain bike but minus the kayak except when actually going kayaking) in the truck. Plus med supplies and food.
My car is usually pretty clean i only have 2 small bags in it, 1 for car things like spare light bulbs, oil or wiper fluid, the other one for various stuff i could need like a shovel, a Glock army knife and a blanket

My car has nothing unnecessary inside, and is my daily. Two microfiber cloths, a quick detail spray, spare face mask, the owners manual and service book; spare tyre changing tools... None of these items are visible inside the cabin. If I want to go to the beach, I load beach stuff in the boot. If I'm going to take my son to school, I pack his bag in the back. No need to carry around unnecessary extra weight!!

Discovery 1: Box of bungee ropes, several spades, basic tools, spare coat, waterproofs, spare dog lead, charging cables (various) and topping up fluids (verious).
Well, 2016 320D... And I'm an IT engineer so cables... Adaptors, tool kits, network switches, laptop docks of various ages.
Then my temp car while the 320D has a new clutch and flywheel... DATTO Appliance rails
My project car... Docks and other IT paraphernalia.
Well, I don't own a car.. But I mistreat my bike(s) none the less.
One has "hydrolic brakes". Instead of kables it uses oil, I think.
And it needs service, BAD! Not the pads, they are fine.
But for some odd reason the fluid keeps draining out of the lines, and I have no idea to where it goes...
Also, both of them spend most of their time outside, in full weather...
My daily is a Jeep Wrangler. My wife, even though she doesn’t drive, manages to keep several books, magazines, beauty products and discarded chocolate wrappers in there.
I've got bits of tools lying about my daily driver mk1 Ford focus. Lots of receipts for some reason or another. Bits of McDonald's 😂 and rust prevention tools like wire brushes and kurust and underseal
My kids have science projects growing out of the seats from McDonald’s French fry’s (that’s why they have been relegated to my old work truck and not my classic Cadillac)
You need a First Aid Kit in there. Maybe an umbrella... for when it rains. Oh, and a blanket or sleeping bag could come in handy for when it breaks down out in the middle of nowhere. More tools too. 🙂

Yes,on a lesser scale,as I have a motorcycle.It's an Honda NC700X which has a storage bin (20liters) where the fuel tank would normally be and gets stuffed with a range of "might need that." Goodies.As some twonk rear ended me eight months ago I can't use it 'till the insurance snails sort it out.Then it will have to be de-cluttered before it goes off for repair (thanks twonk driver)............................................

My vehicle is much worse. I've absolutely ruined the interior. However... it's much better equipped for anything I might encounter. That's my justification for the mess.
When I had the 996, the only stuff I kept in the car was a cd folder with 100 CDs, and some cassettes :)
In the new Rav4 I only keep sunglasses.
I have a 4x4 DSG Yeti…. which is mostly a wardrobe/service van/toolbox/shopping trolley/tow truck/flashing road cone…… and is somewhat grubby 🙂🇬🇧

With my daily car i am calm for situations i could stuck in the middle of nowhere because of my childrens leftovers, half empty bottles and snacks. I would be a survivor!
My daily car is spotlessly clean. I just take what I need each day and then take it out again in the evening
I can attest to this! I keep some spare tools, food, maybe distilled water or antifreeze (waiting on a new radiator), and some half baked projects that never got done.
I always have in my 2004 Audi A6 Avant quattro:
- instant travel set: socks, boxer, T-Shirt, swim shorts (Passenger seat Box)
- charger cables & adapters for all phones (drivers door compartment)
- trash bin: emptied at every exit of the car (big drivers door compartment)
- fuel cards, tissues, hair clips & ties for HER (compartment under steering wheel)
- car papers and manual (leather case under steering wheel)
- coins and spare fuses (ashtray - I don't smoke)
- cutlery, napkins, sugar sachets, cream cups (middle arm rest)
- swizz pocket pliers-knife & sharpener, lighter, flashlight, Paper, pens, V-Cards (Driver seat Box)
- first aid kit, safety vests (Backseat Box)
- tow bar, shackles, Lashing straps (small bottom tray in the trunk)
- spare wheel, tow rope, 5m booster cable, ratchet box, 12V compressor, Jack, car specific tools, gloves
So my car is always clean, seats and trunk are empty although I have EVERYTHING an board ;-)
I was able to find the owners manual, registration, and insurance papers in the glove box of my car...... Oh yes.... almost forgot.... the floor mats. That's it, and how it should be....
James Mays Cars --- Fuel Card (nothing else), sorry Capt. My own car (Alfa Romeo 916 Spider), 4L Oil, 500ml Power steering fluid, ditto brake fluid, full tool kit, plenty of rags, assorted pieces of fence wire, gaffa tape, puncture repair kit as I can't fit a spare tyre in. My company car (Isuzu D'max dual cab) - pretty much what Richard has.

And yeah I have tons of stuff in mine. Umbrella, extra coat, extra sweatshirt, two tire inflators, Medical kit, a bunch of trash in my door pocket. etc. etc.
You REALLY want to know what’s in my “everyday” car?
Napkins, masks, hand sanitizer, 2014 Rand-McNally US Road Atlas (in case my Sat-NAV crashes while I don’t watch the road and do the same), a St. Christopher medal for the same reasons, a giant old bedspread to throw down over the folded-down 2nd & 3rd row when going to the Home Center, a tool box with tools I couldn’t use on this new car anyhow, various fuses and a few refuses, tire pressure gauge, leather preservative wipes for my face, electrical tape for any shocking problems, zip ties for any hostage situation, Binoculators, CD’s (yep, CD’s, the music kind, not the bad-interest-rate bank kind), a roll of paper towels to clean up spilled or creative messes, LED flashlight that also flashes S-O-S, a raincoat, a dried up raincoat, a jacket, a sweatshirt, the obligatory Cheerio under the seat and my “Driving for Idiots” manual with a bookmarker in the “Offensive Driving” chapter.
In comparison with the stuff you fit in your car my car is quite empty, i put only chargers, masks, pen, notes, tools and picnic carpet.

My daily driver is a 71’ Mercedes 280s, and I keep some cassettes in it for the cassette player, paper napkins, a flashlight, and a window punch in the glove box, aaand that’s about it. Other than using the ash tray for paper trash to be thrown away later
