My average heart rate on my Whyte T129rs was 156bpm peaking 172 . On my Canyon Spectral On 7.0 , I average 143 bpm and peak 162 , much safer for my 57 yr old heart! Less arm tingles and fear of death, more smiles!

Obviously Henry is super fit for that ratio. Pretty impressive. When I compare myself I'm nearer 2 to 3 times more runs than when I was on my old non-ebike.

    2019 Giant Fathom E3 23.22km over 1.05 hours climbing 440m
    Had 2 bars left. I'm 48 and weigh 100kgs
Oh yeah... Top speed was 66kmph with warranty restriction

I went to Boomerang Farm the other hot day on my Kenevel, easily did 3 runs for every 2 the shuttle did.

I way in at 220 lbs, 46 years old and just did 40 miles with about half trails. I stayed in eco almost entirely and had 25% battery left when I was done. The same ride before my Levo comp wouldn't of been possible for me. The 3500 ft of elevation gain would of had me calling my wife to pick me up somewhere. I used to drive the 10 miles to the various trails I ride, now I just bike from the house. If these guys continued for the second hour the results would have been dramatic!

Apart from the sheer fun of riding your bike with a mate off road I don’t see the point of this as let’s face it the result was not entirely surprising nor hard to predict. Like to see more epic off road rides to places you couldn’t normally ride without an ebike - this would be much more enjoyable.

If I am using my emtb as an uplift I can generally get twice as many runs in vs myself on my regular bike on if I am riding my local trial centre 9 mile loop I am only 6 min quicker over the lap on my emtb vs my XC bike so it really depends on what type of riding you are doing to how much advantage an emtb gives you.

For more up and down trail riding or Enduro style riding, the e bike shines there, you definitely get more runs up the hill for the same effort.

Really liked this. I actually thought an eBiker could do more like 100% more, but maybe not. Depends how fit you are I suppose.

Would be interesting to see this same comparison but in Eco only. I ride in Eco 90% of the time, 10% Trail, never Boost, so climbs are still quite demanding but faster. I also spend lot of time above 25km/h on the flats. Yesterday I did 83km and 1200m of ascent tour and it was quite the workout, I felt almost as tired at the end as I am on my normal mtb, but needless to say it is way more fun on emtb. You can argue it is bit less effort for the same ride on emtb than on mtb, but more biking overall and doing longer and more demanding tours cancels that difference, so you definitely get more riding for the same effort and needless to say you conquer such terrain and rough fire roads and trails you can only dream about on regular mtb. Normal mtb is so boring now I go back to it less and less. For me EMTB is just the perfect balance of work and fun that I was dreaming about through my few decades of mountain biking

I was interested to see the results of your challenge. Not that the E-MTB thrashed the MTB but that you only had 2 bars left in a 750Wh battery after only an hour of riding. On the face of it you would think, at whatever the boost level with a legal maximum average of 250W, you should get 3 hours ride time + roll time out of the battery. It appears you would have struggled to get half this.
There seem to be 3 main possible reasons for this:
    1) At the kind of amps being draw from the battery, it cannot provide 750Wh.
    2) The motor/control system is not very efficient.
    3) The average maximum watts of 250 is being exceeded.
It would be interesting to see this tested. I don’t expect your sponsors, assuming they provided the bike, would like to see you hack at the cables to put a watt meter between the battery and motor to test point 1 but you could fit an eMTB with a crank or pedal based power meter and a rear hub based power meter to find the human input and the bikes input to test 1&2 together and the to see if the maximum average power is being exceeded.
    I await your test.

Surprised his heart rate was so low but I can understand it having felt turbo. I run eco mode most of the time. Saturday I did 25 trail miles and averaged 156bpm, about 2.5 hours of riding.

When I take my old Orange 224 that's Bafang electrified to Aston Hill I often pass the same young guys pushing up 3 times. So I get up to 3 times the riding in and I'm 30 years older... I own better bikes but for a blast that's what I pick. Henry did really well if you ask me.

  • @Nomads_Rowing

Interesting comparison but heart rate only relevant if it was the same person doing the challenge across two outings as heart rate average and max are very dependent on age but more so on overall fitness. Now Chris, go back and do it again on Henry’s mtb 😎

Seems it all about pride in the pain(heart rate etc) for Henry. Personally, I don't relish the thought of potentially expiring on the hill because my heart/lungs can't handle the intensity. On my Moustache Trail 8 I still get a great workout as intense as I feel up to(prudently more Eco, less Turbo) _and_ have lot of fun. I'm an old fart at 54 and just a few kilos over my high school weight.

Hi I ride 4/5 time per week on a YT capra pro race and for two hrs my peak is 166bpm but do hit 178bpm and my average is 112bpm and am 54 but will be going e-bike soon if I can sell my trick YT. Age is against me but e-bikes will give you a good work out but better on your body if you are doing a high impact sport like Motocross etc as so many are doing this now as my quads are destroyed after a race weekend of deep sand practice and races.

30 point for a bunny hop!!... I have a normal and ebike and the difference on the trail is huge. Normal evil calling bike feels like a feather compared to my intense Tazer but to explore new trails or a area it's the easiest way. If maybe a ebike will weight around 14 kg then the challenge is on.

Lets be honest here..ebikes are used mostly by unfit middleaged men like myself.
It lets me take on long rides that would kill me on an acoustic bike.
Its not a competition...the two can live alongside each other with ease....but we all know whos the fittest out there.

    • @Paulmac2011
      @Paulmac2011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Totally agree with you Andy.
Don't you about you, but MTB and fitness are two different things.
I don't ride to get fit, it's just a by product.
I ride for fun and the ebikes is the tool for the job!

    • @itarry4
      @itarry4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

There doesn't have to be any difference between how hard you work on an acoustic bike or an ebike, it just takes more mental discipline for an EMtB'er to keep their effort levels as high as an acoustic MtB'er who has less choice about how much effort they want to put in if they want to do certain things. If an acoustic rider wants to get to the top of a hill in say 90 seconds then they have no choice but to ride at a certain effort level to do it. Where as an EMtB rider can just bang it up a mode and keep their effort down.
However if the EMtB rider has the mental discipline and the will to work that hard then there's absolutely nothing stopping them it's just Ebikes can, if you let them, make you lazier. Your age, where you live, want to do on your bike etc have no impact on weather you could ride an EMtB or an acoustic MtB but EMtBs have the capacity to open up and allow people to ride who either totally can't ride an acoustic bike or just don't bother because they can't do what they want to do on one or get to where they want to get on it so they don't get whatever it is out of it that they want.
Take me, I've got a damaged heart, 2 of my valves leak, one fairly majorly, meaning I don't process oxygen in my blood as I should so get breathless almost immediately when I exert myself. I can be gasping for breath just running up one flight of stairs so an acoustic bike is basically impossible for me. However with an Ebike I can at least get out and enjoy the countryside and freedom of riding, while also getting much needed exercise at levels I can sustain and manage. Again if needed I can just put the bike in a higher mode and ride things I'd otherwise find totally impossible, I still can't do many things I'd like or used to be able to but I can ride.
A good mate though rides cross-country mtb and takes it fairly seriously and at first, while he saw how great they were for me he thought they'd offer him nothing. Until he borrowed one for a day and realised that having a motor doesn't mean you have to use that motor all the time and do nothing. He saw that as long as he kept on top of it he could still reach the same effort levels during a ride, he'd just cover more ground. He now uses his to help his training, riding it on his lazy rest off days, covering miles and miles at a very consistent and controlled heart rate, in a way that is nearly impossible outside on an acoustic bike, to get near takes loads of planning of the ride and some luck both of which the Ebike removes. The motor just means he has near total control over his effort levels and heart rate meaning he can ensure it never exceeds a certain level for the entire ride, meaning he can go much, much further which is apparently really good for his recovery as he's using the muscles that he needs to rest but at a really low level basically spinning his legs to keep the blood flowing and the muscles relaxed but never straining them or the rest of his body. Some thing he'd used his indoor trainer for before getting an Emtb, now he gets the same fitness benefits but is also improving his skills more than he'd ever do indoors, riding on virtually what he'd be riding in races and gets to do it outside.
Ebikes can be whatever you want them to be and to whoever wants to ride them. In my eyes their biggest advantage and plus is how diverse and inclusive they are having the capacity to do whatever their owner wants of them. Maybe the onky thing I would say and I'm undecided on this as I don't know enough about it but maybe young kids should ride acostic bikes first and learn his to ride one of them before getting an ebike or they might get very lazy or get a slightly strange view on biking.
