@@wolfmtb57 Yes! They are heavy AF. They are less maneurable. They are overly expensive. But they are also more fun than I've ever had on two wheels. I am convinced that the hate is reallly based on envy and even sometimes xenophobia (b/c the ebike is, in a sense, seen as a foreign invader). I just know that when I ride my eMTB, I don't ever want to get off of it, it's so addicting.
Cockeyed Optimist yeah I was on vacation and rent a giant full-e+ i guess and I rode up a relatively steep climb and I would have died on normal bike for sure. I rode a long tour and it was just so fun cause even if I rode down I got back up in no time!
That’s good to see. I know I walk up a lot but I’d rather get in shape/use 1x12 then get an ebike because I do this for fitness that I can enjoy. That and I’m bloody cheap.... I do very much think they are a great idea for the friend that hates climbing. And being involved in bike park type areas myself I do want to do my best to keep them open to ebikes.
@@markfox1545 Your certainly right, though i never asked for you're correction but thanks anyways. Your certainly very helpful and i hope you're helpfulness can spread to others on TH-cam who clearly do not understand the English language. P.S. If you are going to correct someone's grammar, on TH-cam of all places, then you could at least have the decency of forming a complete sentence. What you have said is the linguistic equivalent of walking around with no pants on.
I am in the same boat as you man with a heart syndrome , I wish i could afford to ride an ebike, its not cheating it would give me an opportunity to ride up trails which are beyond my current health limits.
I stopped cycling for ten years because one of my knees just wouldn't allow climbs, got an e-bike, regained a hobby I thought I lost. If you can afford it, try one.
@@Adriano70911 Nah, just born with a slightly asymetric skeleton (especially chest and feet), and because of resulting posture problems, including a one-sided flat foot, my right knee sometimes starts to hurt when it's under constant load, e.g. cycling uphill. The pain started at age 16 or 17, and every time I tried to cycle uphill in my early twenties it started to hurt after a few minutes. I bought an e-bike at age 26, and since then I regularly cross the local hills to get around, instead of relying on bus and tram, which would have been impossible before. So if you love cycling, but can't because of knee problems, trying an e-bike might be a good idea. Maybe ask your physician, because some injuries might get worse from cycling.
@@qtluna7917 thanks but as far as I know my knees are overall in shape. But thats kinda strange what you are saying. I rather used to think a cycling is a healthy activity. I don't do hard uphill but it is say once or twice a week but mixed with a downhill and even jumping, trailing etc and I don't have a suspension which may be the cause to get injured eventually. Thanks for the advices and wish you health
@@Adriano70911 Cycling is healthy, but it can't counteract all damage and my knee just doesn't take heavy load anymore. When it started back in my teens I did about 20-30 km on bike twice a week, and I don't think the cycling caused the damage, but the damage caused pain while cycling (or lifting heavy objects). Thanks, I wish you the best as well. ^^
When they get older, like around 60, the hardcore bikers do have knee related problems... That is harsh reality. eBikes are the future. eBikes do extend the knee problems to show up at around 120 years of age, or later.😉
I'm personally not a fan of E-bikes for my riding, but i love that they exist cause that means that more people are getting out on the trails and more people can have fun the same way i'm having fun. and it is always fun to find likeminded people out on the trails. and i just love that.
@John Ebikes perform essentially the same level of fitness so I'm guessing you won't find to many 300 lb avid eBike riders. lifesciences.byu.edu/e-bike%20intense%20exercise
@John just FYI, you loose more weight while pedaling in the aerobic zone, and this is way easier on an e-bike. On a "normal" bike we drift into the anaerobic zone to often... therefore, if loosing weight is the motivation...
@John lol 300lbs? Loser? So is a filthy rich guy thats 300lbs a loser? Lol no, no he would not be. 7 grand for a bike is stupid af to me but whatever, a 300 lb guy would need upwards of 1200 watts to ride up hill like that with no pedaling.
I am crippled after a bad accident and several surgerys on my spine. I miss riding so much I cant even explain it with words. After seeing this I think I will save up for an emtb so I can ride again. Life is not life without riding. Thanks for the video!
Flying Dragon omg man I know the feeling but definitely not to the extent of what you are experiencing but I just wish you can get better quickly so that you can get back to the trails and ride just like you used to. Best of luck to ya man
I'm dealing with discs and sciatica, so I have a little idea of what ur going through. Very little. Used to ride 3 times a week. Now, once in 2 months. Sux
I totally agree with this video. After being raised on Manual Bikes to the point that I am having a hard time even getting rid of my 20-30 year old bikes as there is still blood and my skin hanging off of them if you know what I mean. So I just recently bought my first eMTB. I love it. I rode it twenty miles the first ride through the desert around Quartzite AZ area and man I had fun. Oh and by the way I only rode on trails or roads when I absolutely had to. That is something I could never pull in a Manual bike. Even when I was 16. Now I can go almost anywhere. Even through deep sands. And because I only used the eBike motor when I needed to, I got through the whole twenty miles and was still full on my Battery when I returned to my starting point. While having incredible fun. Now all I have to do is make the bike “Mil spec” (Rick proof) and I’ll go wild. I’ll never go back because of the whiners who think there is no room for eBikes on trails etc. oh and I’m not a racer anymore because we’ll I’m 66.
I have a friend with severe asthma who loves to bike. It takes her three times as long to get up as anyone else, but on an e-bike she can ascend with the rest of us without having an asthma attack. I am glad that e-bikes are becoming more accepted in the community. A lot of people who normally couldn't be active, now can be.
Well said. I'm a severe asthmatic as well and couldn't agree with you more. I've been riding since the early 90's (GT Timberline rigid fork before suspension) and have had some nice bikes since. I'm slow as molasses and not to make excuses can't help but think "man, if I didn't have this asthma..." I'm 54 now and want to keep MTB'ing and I'm strongly considering one of these.
Been riding since I got my first road bike in 1984, then several years later moved into mountain bikes for trails & street riding. In 2017 I discovered ebikes and have never looked back. I'm riding an avg. of just under 300 miles a month. No matter the weather, wind factor, hills, etc. That's way up from what I was doing. I like reading about folks who can ride again because of ebikes. So it's all good. Good video, have watched it a couple of times now.
I don't find E-Bikes as a controversial subject, it's either you love them or you don't. I think E-bikes are going to be the new standard for cycling in a few years and I look forward to how much better they can get.
Part of the controversy is trail wear and tear. With Ebikers putting in three times as many laps trails its like the user base has tripled in only a couple years. Makes the erosion more significant and causes trail access issues where I live.
@@4realjacob637 That's a narrow minded way of looking at it. E-bikes will become less distinguishable from electric dirt bikes as time goes on. Electric motor and battery technology will improve and I am sure E-bikes will be huge in all age groups in 10+ years. Not to mention E-bikes are super fun, and that's what mountain biking should be about. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean others should be deprived of it!!
So do I, but motorbikes aren't allowed in most places. Sure these might not be allowed everywhere, but most places are going to be OK with something that is quiet and does not do nearly the damage to the trails that motorbikes do.
@@pbanthonyv Damage to trails from motorbikes can be minimized with low pressure trials rear tires and less spinning. I would buy one of these E-bikes just to have more local access to trails. I have to cart my motorbike far away from home to find a legal trail. Mountain bike trails are everywhere and many are built like a work of art. Motorbike trails are often just punched through the forest by hacks and the uphill sections get thrashed quick.
I loved cycling ... when I was young. Then, through various circumstances beyond my control, I got stuck without the means to buy a car or even get a license, living in a place with basically zero public transport, and was forced to use a bike as my only means of transport. Three decades later, I'm ready to retire my bike. I literally just can't do it any more. But I still can't afford the crippling costs of getting a car. I am who e-bikes were really made for.
I ended up getting a motorbike. Basically the same price as an e-bike, but 5x faster, which really is a factor when your commutes are 50 miles each way. No way I could do that on an e-bike.
"If your not racing, how is it cheating" Love it. I dont own a ebike, but i am the Brig on climbs and sometimes dont want to ride with my friends because I feel so bad for them having to wait for me. I have tried a ebike and wont absolutely get one if i had the cash. Nice vid Paul. All about having a good time with friends.
@John I hope you ride an 1890;s bone shaker. Pneumatic tyres, lightweight frames, gears, they're inventions for softees, be a real man, just like your mom.
I’ve been riding mtbs since the mid 80’s, I’m 54 and own an emtb. It was a sunny day and didn’t want to go to the hills, so I went for a really long ride yesterday along a river path. 129km I clocked up in eco mode set on 10% assist. I couldn’t do that on a normal mtb, so I feel like I’ve rolled back time, priceless!
I gotta say too, if someone thinks a motor is some crass sort of cheating, feel free to dial back to a full steel ride. Why are you buying that carbon/aluminum, how light can I afford ride? Because it's lighter? Because it's an easier ride? I am so glad tho to see most people do get it, and really just want to see others be able to enjoy riding, period.
@@Jordan-zk2rf ok, so your a genetic freak and deserve a trophy. The rest of us working class still like to have fun without 20 hours of cardio a week:-)
The biggest problem is just they they need a special frame, the motors and batteries aren’t that expensive even. You can make a good ebike for under 500 if you feel like
In 75' I had a beautiful full Campy 531 double butted, bright yellow and black beauty. I was a semi-serious Roadie when most people riding bikes had no clue what cleats were. Those last few years of High School I was riding 100+ miles a week. Then I sold the bike to get my first car, life took over and now I'm 61, 80 lbs heavier with far less strength or cardio endurance, and tho I wanted to buy a nice road machine, the few times I'd given it a try in our hilly city I felt like I was going to stroke out the minute I hit a hill. No fun = No riding.., and no riding meant no improvement. Four weeks ago I bought what I consider one of the first somewhat serious carbon E-Road bikes, and today the odo reads 144 miles, most in Eco or Touring, the bottom two modes at a total average of over 16 mph - All our Hills included. The main point tho - FUN As F..k! I'm loving the Ride again and hills are NOT a killjoy issue any longer. I still huff and puff intentionally for much of the ride, I still ride to leg burn levels, and I churn up hills because now I can. I'm not doing lots of out-of-the-seat yet, but that's just a balance issue, but the ride once again feels like the old days when I loved it. From 0 miles and total couch potato for the last two years, my job sitting in a cube all day, 2+ hours commute a day, to 144 miles in four weeks - While Having Fun Too! Now I'm back in the gym too, and feeling upbeat about all the exercise crap I previously had no love for whatsoever. I can stomach the rower or the treadmill any day if I know it helps me be better on my cool new bike tomorrow. Only time will tell, the situation could have been much different in a flat city, or maybe I'll burn out, but I doubt it now. I mean, people, the way I feel now about all this is crazy! I suggest these machines are a game changer in ways others don't even yet realize. There are many aspects to the convo about E-Bikes, but I say if it get's people out enjoying riding even in the hills, if it lends more downhill flights to a MTB day, how can it be bad?
Nice story, I think this may have sold me on getting an EMTB. I'm a currently out of shape ex Moto X and Enduro racer who misses the days when land access wasn't such an issue. A bike like this is the only way that I'll get to ride those trails again. At first I thought the pricing was a bit steep but If it gets me fit while getting an acoustic Moto X fix I reckon I'm in.
I have a love/hate relationship with it. I hate it because it's brutal and makes me want to scream but love it because it's definitely doing a lot for my stamina and power.
I love climbing. I used to race XC. I train on road bikes too. But life is a little busy aka no time to train or rides or limited coz I have not yet put in the effort. I don't have an e-bike but I am considering one in the future. Just so I don't have any more excuses not to ride or as a transition when spring sets in up until I have built up my endurance to do rides on my own power.
This is EXACTLY what my experience was! I visited friends in Colorado and I'm from sea level in southern Ga, I didn't want to burden them and the other riders with my burning legs and lungs, walking the uphills while those who were acclimated kept pushing on. A $100 a day e-bike rental changed all of that. I was able to use different power levels for different terrain so that I was doing the "right amount of suffering" (lol), and had a freaking blast. Like this guy I can totally bomb downhills but I have crap endurance, the e-bike was perfect and I'm pretty sad that the bike shop was selling their units and not getting any more because of the controversy over where they are allowed. Understand that this doesn't do all the work for you! The software is amazing and it puts in just enough energy when you peddle. This is an awesome tool for bringing up your endurance by allowing you to stay out longer and bring your body up to par without it being discouraging and hurting like hell.
Have you noticed how things in mountain biking aren't cool, until they are suddenly cool? I think that's what we are going to find with this. Thanks for sharing your story!
@@PaulThePunter This is an excellent video! I am 67 and have been riding bikes since I was young. I have had every kind of bike you can imagine. But when I got into my 60's my inherited crippling arthritis kicked in and it's not just about needing new knees, its my hands, elbows and shoulders. And although I have disc brakes on some of my bikes, it's killing my hands. So next week my Trek Verve plus will finally be at our local bike shop! It has hydraulic brakes and easier to shift. Handlebars not too high, nor too low. The whole design was made for me. I'll be able to keep up with my rode bike friends and I'll be able to commute again. My friends will not have to wait for me and they will never see me in their rear view mirror again! We live in an area of Texas that is all hills.
I think you can still challenge yourself on climbs with ebike and have fun, no need to go turbo on everything. Climbing can be very discouraging for those for whatever reason end up walking it.
I was recently in Squamish for only half a day. Arrived on the bus, picked up a DeVinci AC GX from Corsa Cycles at midday and rode to the top of Full Nelson from town, back up the climb trail and did Recycle, back up to do Half Nelson. Then another four trails after that before heading back to town to return the bike. I couldn't have done it without a little bit of assistance and was so stoked I got to experience the world-famous Squamish trails that I may never get to that side of the planet to ride again. More riding = more fun.
Awesome video Paul! From a young age i have suffered from a knee injury that has kept me from riding any sort of uphill. By the time I would be at the top I would be in no condition to ride back down. This year I got in to a Cube Stereo 160 E-Bike. Total world of difference. I have ridden places I would have never imagined and I keep up with the friends on climbs. I Don't feel bad one bit.
I recently bought an eMTB via my work's cycle to work scheme and the assist on it is crazy, makes such a difference to my old non electric MTB, I got for cycling longer distances where the pedal assist would come in handy which it does, especially on the forest and river trails in my area
I am a late bloomer and just got to enjoy trail riding at the age of 40. Climbing has been a real issue for me and when I get to go downhill, my legs are already zapped from the climbing. Ebikes are a godsend and this would enable people like me to enjoy biking even as we move our ages forward.
Great video Paul. It's all about having fun. As your mate said, "If you're not racing, how's it cheating?". I have an ebike and a normal bike. I actually prefer to ride the normal bike, but on the right day and on the right (read NASTY) ride the ebike is the way to go. So much fun. Just wish the battery lasted longer :)
Being 58 years old and in a poor health situation, I ride a e-bike mtb in the Jersey pine barrens, it is exhilarating and not possible to pedal in the sand single trails.
I got my Canyon Neuron:ON just couple of weeks ago, but already I feel it was one of my wisest moves ever. I have never had so much fun riding a mountain bike! You're able to ride longer distances, climb hills you never thought were possible, and you don't feel so beat up after a day of riding. That means you can ride again tomorrow! Another huge plus for me is the added weight of an e-bike. I come from riding motorcycle enduro and motocross, I've never had full confidence on a light mountain bike, and I'm much more in tune with the heavier e-bike. I don't care about the naysayers, but you do hear a lot of that negative crap. I think that will pass, as more and more riders try out an e-bike and get hooked.
As someone who is two seasons into MTB and is old-ish (39), I just tried an emtb for the last two weeks on loan from a buddy. I've ridden more, gotten a great workout and had a lot more fun.
Sounds good, though realistically you have to hammer pretty hard to get a decent pay off when riding. With electrons, it would be less still. In the bike touring world (where you ride all day long and haul a ton of camping gear), There is this thing I have heard often which is that if you ride less than 50 miles a day, you can easily put on weight. And the reason is that riding 50 miles stimulates appetite, and maybe you get some high carbs for food. I know I average 90 miles a day (not so hard, 10 miles per hour for 9 hours will do it), and the first time I did it for 2 weeks I dumped a ton of weight, second time, not much change. So it isn't all about weight, but it is interesting how the cardio went through the roof, and leg muscles bulked up a lot. But it is still something one does while sitting on a very efficient machine.
E-Bike is for anybody that wants one! To each their own. Don't like them?... hmmm... well... I guess you simply don't buy one... yeah, that might work, huh?
It's not that people dislike "e-bike" as a concept . They just dislike the basdardised and "PC" name used: "e-bike" rather than electric mobylette/moped ...
I personally don’t like E-bikes for one reason. People say that they are good for people who are getting discouraged because they can’t climb a hill. Now unless that person has some sort of heart problem or muscle problem etc. I don’t think they should just get one just because they are giving up. Mountain biking is about building skill and pushing your limits so I think being lazy is not a good reason to get an E-bike.
I love to climb. Mountain bikes are designed to climb. My trail bike has no problem climbing and I have a hard tail. When I can't get to the dirt trail I will ride on the street and am constantly besting the street bike riders on hills. They soon pass me on the flat stretches, of course, but my bike can climb. It also builds stamina _and_ strength at the same time which is a double benefit. That's not to say that e-bikes don't have a place though. They give many people the opportunity to ride again though they might not be able to because of health or injury. I wish I had one when I bruised my kneecap as I couldn't ride for a couple of months after that and still had to wear a brace afterwards to start riding again (against doctors orders).
This guy needs to learn of the magic of converting his already existing bikes. He could use a BBSHD motor and shark battery kit on one of his existing bikes and it would only cost him around $1400 CAD to do the swap. Bonus points is that the conversion battery kits that go in the bottle holder mounting points are mostly standardized, so when his battery inevitably wears out after years of riding like all ebikes do, it'll be easy to get a replacement. Much easier than when the battery is installed as part of the frame or proprietary design socketed into an inset in the frame.
That was incredible. Truly the evolution of cycling as we’ve never seen before. A cycling game changer for the elderly and those with health issues. Riding at age 100+ has become a reality. 👍
effing yeah. AGREED. Used to mx all the time as a teen, then real life hit, college, wife, job, house, kids, etc....once i hit 40 I was like, wth am I saving all this money for if I'm not using it or enjoying it... all I do is work my day job, my photography business, and go to the gym. Nothing else. I had enough. Buying and building bikes and enjoying things so much more!
'I have always enjoyed riding my bike, but as I got older, it had become less enjoyable. Just today, I received and assembled and road my first ebike. Its a Hyper 29" mid drive. Its incredible. I am so glad I purchased it. It is a blast. It makes me feel 20 years younger and I am anxious to go riding again tomorrow.
Very educational video about e-bikes. I am still recovering from a broken ankle and I was very worried about not being able to put the power down as before. If that was the case I would totally consider an e-bike. Luckily I am making a full recovery and will pedal on my own for years to come. Whatever gets people into riding should be allowed. Riding is therapy, and for anyone disabled, injured or any other reason... let then wheels roll. Imagine being able to ride with your GF and don't have her complain the whole ride!
Haha, luckily my girlfriend never complains - it's actually my male friends more! Thanks for sharing your story and your viewpoint, this is why I'm on board with pedal assist 🤙
A Rad power bike is a great way to start. They anywhere from $1000 to just over $1500, come with the goodies you'd imagine and can even operate with a throttle.
I know this is an old video but I want to thank you for it. My dad is super old school and was never enthusiastic about E-bikes. He is 66 and not as strong as he used to be so he just couldn't keep up with me on casual rides anymore. Showed him this video some time ago and gradually convinced him to get an Ebike. Today he finally got one and I haven't seen him happier! Now he has to wait for me!
I love this video! I loved biking, but was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that causes my quadriceps to severely cramp and sieze with excessive quad-dominant movements (especially uphill climbs). An e-bike allowed me to keep doing what I love!
Love this. I ride both regularly love my ebike for quick blast's around trails after work without it taking too long and being already knackerd. Take away comment "If your not racing, how's it cheating?" Wise words.
@@ernestfrigelj2876 No I really don't because if not for an ebike I wouldn't ride at all. A few short years ago I rode all around town and if I lived in a flat place I still could. I still get a work out on it, it has a throttle but I usually only use it occasionally to catch my breath for a block or two. Being a class 3 it can go faster if you put it in a low gear and pedal at a decent cadence no force applied than the throttle gives. Only thing I'm cheating myself out of is being lazy in a recliner.
63 years young and in Aug got a 2021 Turbo Levo Comp and what a game changer!! It's the most fun I have ever had on a bicycle. Living in NE Tennessee we have hundreds of miles of natural trails. Worth every cent!!
Nice job on this video it was enjoyable visually and informative. I'm in the same boat as Brig. I'm a former Pro MXer, and a Construction Company owner that still does a lot of the work. At 54 my body needs some help. I've been riding and training on mountain bikes since the mid 80's ( still own a Ross Mt. Hood) I'm just looking into these bikes now. I like to climb so that's not an issue but I want to ride longer and enjoy the riding more.
@@wardud3_118 Are you being nice or sarcastic? 🤔 It's hard to tell, especially online. I didn't even know I had 5 subs. Idiots have obviously pressed the button by mistake, but they're MY idiots, and I love all 5 of them anyway 🤗 Peace out man ✌️
I've never visited your channel before, but I surprisingly found myself smiling and laughing along with your guy's friendship and excitement. I'm just getting into MTBing myself, so seeing these types of relationships/conversations really make the journey so much more awesome to experience and look forward to.
I recently bought an ebike and I'm now getting out more than ever, going further than ever and the uphills are just as much fun as downhills. This video proves exactly what ebikes are for, no more pushing up the climbs, more runs being done, more activities and better for everyone's wellbeing
My wife bought me a trek rail 7 for my birthday. Been biking off and on for 5 years or so and this bike it utterly amazing. Total game changer and made biking an absolute blast. I found myself literally laughing maniacally as i curb stomped every uphill there was. I still had a similar heart rate the whole time compared to regular biking, but found i went farther and had a LOT more fun. thanks for the video! Set up a donation site for your buddy and i'll chip in to getting him a nice ebike!
Great video paul !!! being 51 myself I struggle with climbing and due to being a smoker earlier in life costs me (which I regret). I mainly ride with friends younger then me and I feel the guilt holding them up which is pushing me to buy an ebike. Plus busy life and wanting to ride more and wanting to do longer rides. The more I think about it the benefits are there shuttling and ripping down just sounds awesome thanks.
I've just ordered my first e-bike, and I'll have it in a few days. I've liked riding a bike all my life, but it was always so tiring that I ride MUCH less that I'd want to. Now, I firmly believe the e-bike will rekindle my love of riding a bike.
I'm 71 yrs. old and I've ridden MTB since 1987. I ride singletrack at least 3 times a week and lately I was needing a rest on some of my fave uphills. I bought a Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Alloy about a month ago and now I am able to ride longer and also explore more areas and the Levo is great going down flow trails and techy downhills. One of my favorite things about it is how well it does uphill switchbacks. I just sold my Santa Cruz 5010 to a young dude who is just getting into the sport, the 5010 was a great bike but I needed help on steep uphills!
Well done! Before watching this video I didn’t really get it, but this is a perfect example of why they exist. Yep, crazy expensive now, but I bet they’ll come down a bit over time. Thank you for the well made video!
Crazy expensive is as with all things RELATIVE. Ythere are a bunch of manufacturers who make cheaper ebikes. Just be realistic about your desires and capabilities and buy accordingly. I paid a bit under fife grand for mine but I often ride alone (single) and need reliability. So I’m continually upgrading my eBike to make it as tough as I can. Plus I use GPS trackers and sattelite commo devices in case of an emergency. So with bikes there is no reason you can’t ride for adventure or even travel if you want.
I tried one a few weeks ago on a enduro trail with my brother who is a pedaling machine. For the first time, I was able to climb faster than him and we both had a great time. In fact, I had the most fun negotiating curves at speed going uphill! eBikes kick ass 😀
I just finished my second Ebike build. I ride longer & more often. When I get on my regular mtb, I am stronger, and I love it’s lighter feel. All good.
I ended up buying a budget ebike, the Eahora am100 (around 1799CAD) with a hub motor. I hurt my knee playing soccer and this bike gave me the means to keep up with my mates when we go biking. It's lovely. One day I'll get one of these really nice ones though!!
You should learn that pedalling and walking use different muscles. Hiking is several times less tiring than pedalling uphill. His pedalling muscles are lacking endurance. That's why he frequently dismounts and walks in order to rest his pedalling muscles. Using an e-bike for several months could help him have longer pedalling sessions at a lower effort level, which will help build the required endurance in those muscles. And then he can switch back to his regular bike and make the full climb unassisted.
I'd never climbed Mt Snowdon. Took my DH bike up there for the first time. I like climbing & hiking but never take a DH bike up a mountain. You'll be pushing that b---h like a woman giving birth
You don't know how often I want to call out to people on the street, raise the dam seat!!! People practically kneeing themselves in the chest. Kids riding with their parents struggling to keep up. Raise it proper for the climb, lower it for the downhill.
@@joeshmoe7967 when i use to dirt track race we would keep our seats as low and as small as possible because we never used them other than the couple seconds to sit at the end of a race lol. Im trying to get into mtn bikes or dirt jumping but its a lot more expensive than bmx and race bikes lol
Ebikes are wonderful, i got one recently from SWFL Golf Carts and I wouldn't replace it for anything.Cycling really gets me going and helps me stay active
I think I am like Paul - I love the climb more than the descent! I feel a sense of accomplishment! Coming down is fun no doubt but I get such a buzz from the ride up!
I watch all kinds of videos on YT. This video is simply outstanding. Thank you for putting this together. Great storyline and wonderful narration. Your practical point of the story was wonderfully delivered. Great job!
I have no problem at all with e-bikes - as you say it's all about the use case. I'm a masochist and want to crush the life out of myself on uphills, so an e-bike would be self-defeating. But I can see how an e-bike would be perfect for many people.
It also works wonders for people with disabilities like me. I'm still 19, but I used to play hockey. Got my knee damaged, and I can't climb on a bike. Eventually stopped riding bikes because of that. But e-bikes made me fall in love with it again, and I'm having the same ammount of fun as some regular bikes. Yeah, still gets me tired af, but it's a lot easier on my knees. And allows even older people to be able to ride bikes, and still have fun as well
I own a Quietkat electric bike for deer hunting, and its amazing. I can move quickly through the woods and not be gassed. I can see why people think its cheating but if its a recreational bike its worth it.
It's all about having fun with your mates so if an e-bike helps then hell yes. I used to dis them but I have no right to judge, I mean gears make it easier so why not a motor. I now think they are brilliant at getting people to ride more and that has to be a good thing 👍
Until your mates don't want to ride with you as biking as a group is about shared suffering, even the super fit guy will have muscle burn and be suffering, he just trained for it, getting an ebike because frankly, you're lazy, is just going to leave you friendless or riding with other ebikers on your motorbikes.
Using an ebike is like playing doom at less than nightmare difficulty. There is something to be said about the harder option. If you can stomache it, it really does feel so much better. But you shouldn't stop enjoying something just because you're too proud to take it in moderation. I probably won't buy an ebike any time in the next two decades, and I'll take every exhausting hill I encounter with pride. But when I'm old, and my body betrays me, or if I ever suffer a serious injury, I won't hesitate to employ whatever measures nessesary to ensure I can still do what I love. Now if You'll excuse me, I've got to go slay a doom boss at too young to die difficulty.

@Stable Genius {Jihad} no, no they're not, they are just like mountain bikes but you don't have to give yourself an aneurysm trying to get up the trail. And are a lot faster, and you can have more fun.
if I had the financial means to do so, I would absolutely buy an e-bike. If your not a good climber, why burn yourself out only find yours friends at the top waiting, and then promptly leave without you getting any rest break at the top. Honestly I don't understand why it's controversial if it means more people having fun on the trails
That's as far as you've thought this through? Holy shit we're fucked! You know how easy these things are to throttle hack right? Now imagine in 3 years when John Twat and his buddies are ripping around Alice Lake on there 800W electrically motorized bikes at 45kph and they plough into a family out for a walk. Land issues back to square one and everything fucked while they work out how to police these things from normal bikes. I can't believe people can't see where this is going to end up.
@@gweflj You are forgetting the fact that with that price tag comes really good brakes. Every single retail ebike I've seen that had that sticker shock, and was sold out of a shop, had minimum 180mm (from the standard 160mm) rotors, and hydraulic brakes. Have you even RIDDEN an ebike, let alone inspected one? I can ride just as fast on a 30lb Schwinn, but you don't see people bitchin about that, do ya? NO! I DON'T EVEN HAVE THE BRAKES THAT THOSE EBIKES DO!!! Also, do you really think that a 45lb emtb will cause significantly more injury than a 30lb starter mtb? Think again bud, the human body is much stronger than you think. Also, take into consideration the TOTAL weight of rider+bike. Yes, the EMTB may be 15lbs heavier than my bike, but put me on an ebike at a total weight of 175, and a heavier rider on my bike at a total weight of 190, and you completely negate that difference, even going so far as to turn the tables! If anything, the heavier rider will have a harder time stopping with my brakes than he would with the ebike brakes. I would stop almost TOO fast (yes, there is such a thing) on the ebike with ITS brakes. So, the next time you decide you're going to become John Twat with that attitude, think again before you get proven wrong.
i grew up rarely ever riding a bike. mostly due to not living in an area where i could regularly go out and ride. so when i went to college and decided to get one, it was tough. at the start, i was going slow and using so much energy that i would end up walking to class with my bike. it was a mountain bike (which isn’t horrible! i’ll still be using it for trails one day) so it wasn’t great for going around campus… but it helped me fit in with most of the other students riding bikes. i just got a used ebike from my grandparents, and i’m nervous about going on campus and being judged. that line “if you’re not racing, how is it cheating?” it lessened my nerves. thank you for this video man. it really helped!
I was really surprised why this wasn't discussed at the shop, how could they not know that everyone is not wanting to know how the handling was with the extra weight?
Another slam dunk by the Punter! 🤘🤘🤘 I wish people would get off their high horses about ebikes, and go TRY one! 😂 After a long day of work, with only 30-60 minutes to ride... I woul totally reach for the ebike Everytime 🤷♂️ if they were allowed on my trails 😓
Love that comment "If you;re not racing, how is it cheating!", that's gold. Just in my last year before I hit the 50, having worked long hours in my own business for the past 10 and then tore my left quadriceps 100% in half in August 2019, after getting into cycling in my mid 30's getting pretty fit in the end, I'm now super unfit and can't keep up with my young sons let alone my old cycling buddies. Just invested in a 2022 Norco Sight VLT A2, super excited to get back on a bike and so are they.
I need an E-bike. I went biking a few times with a competitive biker, and someone who made it to the preliminaries for Olympic swimming. The competitive biker guy was far faster than both of us combined. I swear he wasn't physically capable of slowing down. I swear everywhere we went was uphill in every direction.
I get to ride my favorite local Trail two to three times before I go home instead of the usual one. It's an expensive price of Entry but that alone is worth it
@@pr0gengoo96 It's an e bike disease. I built one for < $200, let my friend try it in the parking lot at work. This friend is a long-time jaded rider. I just know that when I ride my eMTB, I don't ever want to get off of it, it's so addicting.
Hey try the same with both of you on the ebike! And pace up the hills! Promise you, this will be awesome too!

I stopped cycling for ten years because one of my knees just wouldn't allow climbs, got an e-bike, regained a hobby I thought I lost. If you can afford it, try one.
Did you injured your knee on a bike?

Ebikes perform essentially the same level of fitness so I'm guessing you won't find to many 300 lb avid eBike riders.
lifesciences.byu.edu/e-bike%20intense%20exercise
@John just FYI, you loose more weight while pedaling in the aerobic zone, and this is way easier on an e-bike. On a "normal" bike we drift into the anaerobic zone to often... therefore, if loosing weight is the motivation...
@John lol 300lbs? Loser? So is a filthy rich guy thats 300lbs a loser? Lol no, no he would not be. 7 grand for a bike is stupid af to me but whatever, a 300 lb guy would need upwards of 1200 watts to ride up hill like that with no pedaling.

Why am I the only one who enjoys climbing honestly feeling all those muscles cramping etc. then cresting the hill and bombs away
Climbing feels like good pain on most bikes/hills....It is pure misery when the whole idea is to enjoy a day doing downhill.
Muscles aren't the biggest issue here(Colorado), it's trying to get enough breath in 10k+ altitude.
I'm with you a great sense of victory

I think you can still challenge yourself on climbs with ebike and have fun, no need to go turbo on everything. Climbing can be very discouraging for those for whatever reason end up walking it.
E-Bike, pretty much a powered trail bike with the weight of a downhill bike?
Sounds good.
Holy - that's a big day! Glad you got to see a bunch of the trails in town :)
Sounds like a great “half day”.

That’s great to hear!
Can't hate the ebike, it's getting many more people into riding that would otherwise pass it by and making the sport bigger than ever before!

That's the perfect way of putting it - personal choice. 🤙
...that's what she said... :)
Could you please tell me the ebike name used in this video

I personally don’t like E-bikes for one reason. People say that they are good for people who are getting discouraged because they can’t climb a hill. Now unless that person has some sort of heart problem or muscle problem etc. I don’t think they should just get one just because they are giving up. Mountain biking is about building skill and pushing your limits so I think being lazy is not a good reason to get an E-bike.
i had a huge smile once he started climbing with that e bike xp.

Very educational video about e-bikes.
I am still recovering from a broken ankle and I was very worried about not being able to put the power down as before. If that was the case I would totally consider an e-bike. Luckily I am making a full recovery and will pedal on my own for years to come.

I'm 71 yrs. old and I've ridden MTB since 1987.
Remember how expensive big flat screens were when they came out?
Brig: I hate climbing
Also Brig: hobby is hiking
You should learn that pedalling and walking use different muscles. Hiking is several times less tiring than pedalling uphill. His pedalling muscles are lacking endurance. That's why he frequently dismounts and walks in order to rest his pedalling muscles. Using an e-bike for several months could help him have longer pedalling sessions at a lower effort level, which will help build the required endurance in those muscles. And then he can switch back to his regular bike and make the full climb unassisted.

Wholesome video of buds looking out for each other and having a good time. Love to see it.

@@gweflj you're assuming John Twat wouldn't have pulled the same manuever without the throttle hack. ;)
@@rondre3000 At least a 15kph difference in speed and a 10lb heavier bike to slowdown and hit things with.
