"Hand on shoulder" is also weight dependent. Fine if you're a lightweight but you feel your arm pulling out of its socket if your a lardy when your mate flips into turbo on the hill. (Says he from experience)
I have a couple of friends that I love to ride with who tend to be a bit slower than me (uphill and downhill), so I will ride my Turbo Levo with it turned off. That keeps things more equal. One ride about a year ago; we rode out of town (about 2 miles straight up) to the trail head, had a drink and a snack, and headed down to the coast (5 miles of glorious downhill). About 2 miles down, I stopped to wait for my friends. Ten minutes later; still nothing. Thinking the worst, I turned my Levo on to boost mode and headed uphill. I blasted back up the trail vastly quicker than I could have on my non-EMTB, and found one friend had wiped out and was cleaning his wounds. Nothing too serious, but if it were, the time saved with the e-bike could have had all the difference.
Yes, I do it with my cheap friends all the time, in fact I even push them or they hold on to me during the steep uphill bits when they run outta steam. 🤣👍
I ride with a big group - so far I’m the only one on an ebike - but there’s nothing but a bit of banter on the uphills, no hassle at all. I’ve made a load of new mates. I’m learning a lot as some of them are seriously good downhill riders.
Solution: sufficient gearing. I find that on my 34 / 11-51 (Shimano 12x) I am a lot more "normal bike" compatible than on my 35 / 11 - 42 (Bosch CX 11x) ..... On the granny gear I can pretty much go as slow as a normal climber would, while the 25% faster gearing is just too fast for a normal bike to keep up. I keep repeating this, but a really low gearing also preserves batteries and allows you to spend more in "ECO" (or whatever your manufacturer's lowest assist is called) while also getting a harder workout.
I rode with two ebikers today, they are both over 10 years older than me and they had to wait at the top of each hill for me lol. it was a very slippy, muddy day that just sapped your energy on a normal mountainbike, The downhills were great on any of the bikes but the uphills were so much fun on the ebikes, honestly the most fun ive had offroad since i had my motox bikes. Definately getting one early next year but will keep my specialized enduro too :)
My girl and I go out On group rides all the time with non E bike riders. Loads of fun and nobody leaves anyone behind. Actually the fastest rider of the group rides an analog bike and he can basically leave us all behind if he wanted to. Even if I was in Turbo mode I wouldn't be able to keep up.
Talking about over complicating things. I've had 2016 Scott E-Spark 710 over 3years. I'm a member of a few local MTB clubs. As the only E-MTB rider I learnt 2 basic rules quickly. I always ride at the back of the group, and never in the first 3 to finish at the top of an hill, depending on how many is in the group :-)

Buy one - i did no regrets - I find I do more distance and ascents on ebike that I ever did on a analogue bikes. - do more in less time - I live on the Pennines and it’s all up or down - wish I did it sooner
Grim Reaper buy one now. There are so many rad bikes to get right now. I have a 2019 Levo and love it. Every year there will be big leaps in ebikes. If you wait until next year to get the 2021 models you will still have the same feeling of “maybe I should wait for the 2022’s since they will probably be better”. Before you know it you will have waited 5 years and missed out on all the fun. Get one now and have a blast for 5 years and then get a new one that has internal gearing and weighs less then 35lbs (16kg) and only costs $500 more then a traditional MTB (if they still make them 😉).
Mixed groups are fine so long as you don't get a knobhead on the ebike. In fact they would be a person who you would not want in your group on a non ebike !.
My best riding friend is biking animal, he is light and has huge stamina, a natural climber, he would always leave me on climbs and then wait along the way. Since I have emtb we are together on climbs and I adjust my speed to him, so yeah, why not. But maybe I should start leaving him on the climbs now 😁😁 Nah, cause I prefer bit slower riding to waiting

At this point I think the 2020 bikes are out. If you wait too late into the year there can be trouble with supply (as I found this year).
They were discounting the 2019 Kenevo, so 2/3rds price of 2020. Awesome bike no regrets.
