  • WEST LINDSEY PARISH #84: SCAMPTON
Welcome to Scampton, one of the British villages strongly associated with the RAF. This is situated 8 km north of Lincoln, 16 km south-east of Gainsborough, and immediately west of the A15.
The population of the civil parish includes that of Brampton and Broadholme - weirly, despite them both being quite a way from Scampton. Most people here live on an estate close to RAF Scampton
And RAF Scampton is the biggest landmark in this part of West Lindsey, well known for quite a few reasons, including 617 Squadron - known to many as famous the Dambusters Squadron
The village pub is even named The Dambusters Inn, in honour of the squadron. Located on the High Street it contains lots of memorabilia from WWII. Scampton is also associated with the Red Arrows -
the RAFs acrobatic display team who have been seen in the skies above the village for many years - and they still fly over today despite having been relocated to RAF Waddington last year
The church is also a very important landmark in the village. It contains at least 115 war graves - the most we’ve ever seen in one place. A lot of them were personnel from RAF Scampton
Scampton is pretty much all about its RAF past, and its residents are proud of it too. So much so that a heritage centre is being developed here to preserve it all, thanks to some grants and funding
It’s the most important RAF village we’ve done. Here’s Scampton folksl

    So interesting for me.

I like how the village pub is named after Dambusters .

Wow this was a brilliant episode Andy, really interesting and couldn't have turned out better seeing the red arrows. I've never been to Scampton so it was fascinating, we do get the arrows flying over our part of E. Yorks and I nabbed a picture of them only recently over our house, on Jan 18th, I never tire of seeing them :)

Woah, those Red Arrows are insane! I've never seen anything like that aside from the occasional fighter jets passing over my hometown in my youth. Imagine visiting Scampton without knowing anything about the Red Arrows and suddenly hearing and seeing them thundering through the normally calm British countryside skies, surely you'd consider the option that a war might have broken out or something. Reminds me of the air raid siren tests that happen every month over here in the Netherlands, tourists probably panic over them quite often.

Like I said in the episode, I'm so used to them, I think nothing of them now...but yeah, as a tourist you'd be wondering what the hell was going on!

I'm guessing the red arrows were training in that area because they still had permission to use that area. They've been granted a temporary airspace change over RAF Syerston from January 9 till April 17, 2023. This is because they're selling the land that RAF scampton was on, and they're waiting to see what is going to be happening with the land.

I heard about this - Syerston locals aren't too keen on the idea apparently. Noise issue alledgedy.
Personally I'd consider it an honour

@@TheVillageIdiot it's actually further to syerston from Waddington than it is to scampton.

By some margin! South of Newark vs just North of Lincoln

@@TheVillageIdiotif I remember rightly, I think syerston isn't far from Southwell (make sure you pronounce that one right if you do it 😆)

Scampton had a gate Guardian Lancaster bomber NX611 which is now down the road at east Kirkby museum also had a 22.000lb tall boy bo-mb alongside which was said to have been a live bo-mb when removed for road widening if it had exploded it was said it would of taken out Scampton and some of Lincoln, how true it was well that's still a myth.
