Borntolagagain The Aztecs were one of the biggest empires of their time and had a very advanced society. Yes, they practiced human sacrifice but didn't the Spartans kill the sick and "imperfect"? didn't they use slaves? My point was that much like the Spartans, the Aztecs were a proud warrior culture who had an empire of extraordinary proportions. Plus the Aztec empire had over 200,000 inhabitants by the early 16th century CE, making it the largest city in the Pre-Columbian Americas. The spartan empire only had 20,000 - 35,000 free residents, plus numerous helots and perioiko. There really isn't point a point of comparison between the two except for the fact that they were warrior cultures.
+Borntolagagain you're very ignorant in the matter. Aztecs had honor too, being a soldier was what every child wanted and the only way to being someone within their society was being an warrior. The reason they used the weapons they used was because they didn't want to kill their enemies, they wanted, like you said, to take them alive and sacrifice them to their gods. Was this an act of savagery? Sure it was, but so was killing your infant child because he was born with a defect. The reason the Aztecs and natives of the Americas were ultimately beaten by the European settlers was not because they were inferior but because of the diseases the Europeans brought with them. Nowhere in history will you find people shunning the Aztec empire but they will praise it for its splendor and the magnitude of its size and architecture.
+Borntolagagain You do not really understand how civilization works do you? The reason the Aztecs did not have things such as metal working has nothing to do with a lack of civility or intelligence but basic circumstance created by geography. You really should read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond which easily explains the geographical circumstances that allowed certain civilizations to forge the way first. Also, you really should not be idealizing the Spartans as some paragon of integrity or honour when they were actually considered amongst Ancient Greeks to be culturally backwards and they were just as trapped by dogma (if not more so) then most ancient cultures. Every insane thing they did (and the list is quite high) was because "Lycurgus said so", Lycurgus being an ancient Spartan lawgiver who made a rather ridiculous book that was followed for generations and led to Sparta's eventual downfall and complete and utter marginalization. I mean fuck, they dressed their brides up as little boys, used steel rods as currency (long after coins had been adopted by everyone), and could not even go on extended military campaigns as their ridiculously large slave population would revolt and take over the town. They failed so badly at adapting that during the Battle of Sphacteria they had their asses kicked by Athenian slaves throwing rocks. As an extra side note, most Ancient Greek warfare is denoted by a complete and utter lack of strategy, the phalanxs completely falling apart (hence the military reforms of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great which many cite is the only reason Alexander was able to conquer as much as he did), and a ridiculous competition between one another (so a lack of camaraderie) for the most time (tee-may). Early Ancient Greeks also much like the Aztecs did engage in ritualized human sacrifice which later gave way to animal sacrifice...
