The last three seasons, all the battles, speeches, character moments, and little bits of foreshadowing were just the prelude to what the show is actually about. Hint: It's not about fighting titans.
A really interesting thing about Zeke from a few of his comments is that he doesn't seem to like or care for what he's doing. He seems to dissociate from his actions by turning everything into a game of baseball and he even seemed to be frustrated for the people in the walls because they had their memories wiped. He said to Reiner and Bertolt that he just wants things to be over. And even his comment in this episode, "Isn't war a terrible thing?" I do think he's one of the more intriguing characters because we've known him for several seasons now and his true intentions are still unclear. GO MONKE. Side note, the ED for this part of the Season, Shock, is absolutely top tier and everyone should check it out if they haven't.
I think I really like the idea that he disassociates the biolence with baseball. It's not on the level of Reiner and the whole Soldier/Warrior thing, but yeah

The most savage part about Eldia's position in Marley is that Marley has completely weaponised them. Like it's one thing to enslave people. To weaponise them too? You need ice in your veins and hate in your heart for that.

Well, we've arrived. After three seasons, we've arrived at the Marley Arc. Some people call it the start of the real story. Some people call it when the series took a downturn in quality that it never recovered from. Some people call it when the series reached new heights. I call it my favourite arc in anime. I will go into more detail in the final episode of this arc. All I will say now is that I am giving the Marley Arc a 10/10.
I watched in subs and it was immediately obvious to me that the Mid East allies were analogous to the Ottoman Empire/Turkey. The Fez hats are an obvious clue, not to mention the landscape... Not sure what you mean by them not looking Turkish? They literally couldn't look more Turkish unless they literally animated them a Turkeys

Just so many iconic scenes and moments (Reiners and Bertholdts Reveal, Erwin leading the charge with "Sacrifice your Hearts" and getting his arm bitten off, Eren punching the smiling titan etc etc. For me it's Season 2 > 3 (just Part 2 tbh) > 4 > 1

22:13 can i just say it's so deeply heartening to see montana's horror at the eldians being turned into titans against their will and used as tools of war? a couple reactors i've watched have watched that particular part with some mix of glee and "that's awesome," and i know the music is swelling and to some degree it does seem cool or at least interesting, but watching this episode, particularly that part, made my stomach twist in the worst way. really looking forward to seeing montana experience the rest of this season, which does really well in pulling on those "oh my god, this is horrible" sensibilities

I’ll explain Bert; his height and stature give him his advantage. He was said to be back in season one to be “very athletic.” This was said by Keith Shadis.
I mean, they pick Warrior Candidates by making them go through extreme Warrior training program, if Bert was able to pass that training then surely he's worthy for the position of warrior.
I think there's another reason as well, but this is just my theory. Berthold was lacking initiative, he was pretty reactive, and obedient. Better give the colossal titan to the person who most likely never stand up to Marley, ever.
@@tomotion8524 I also think about that as a possibility, because if they decided for example that Porco was to be made a warrior but still wanted extremely-loyal-Reiner in the team, the titan they would have absolutely not given him is the Colossal, bc Porco very clearly has the most notorious rebellious streak among them. So I think that Bertholt receiving the Colossal was definetely done with reasons like that in mind aside from his obvious physical talent.

Ah yes, the Marley Arc. Where Isayama makes us feel for characters we were content to hate, clouds our sense of good and bad guys, makes us question who exactly we *want* to survive in the first place, and turns Eren from a suicidal maniac to a genocidal maniac. 10/10. This arc is like the philosophical version of crack.
I think the reason bertholt was picked for colossus was precisely for his demeanour and personality. I mean imagine if eren was the colossus, it would be mayhem.
Apparently he was picked for the Colossal because of his 'ability to do anything' according to an Isayama QnA panel. Which translates towards being the most all around skilled warrior I imagine
I also didn't realized abt Ymir being the former jaw like i didnt think much thru it also at first when i saw the new jaw, i thought it's another titan lol but i figured it's the jaw since they keep mentioning that the cart and jaw will be joining them in the battle later then when Galliard himself spoke abt Ymir, that's when i fully realized wtf happened to her. I couldn't move for a sec (Ymir is one of my fav character) and i like bawled there and had to pause the vid for a moment. I was rlly heartbroken
Fun fact: Soldiers Marleyans fighting are very close depictions of Ottoman soldiers during WW1. In the Japanese VO soldier Falco was helping still speaks Japanese (not sure) in that scene, but I'm pretty surprised to see that here, he actually speaks Turkish in the English Dub.
@@wingsoffreedom3589 I see it as personal preference. Though I must say I'm really revolted by titans' voices in the English dub. They are screeching rather than roaring which is a big downgrade over the original imo. I've no idea why it is done like that.
I think something that makes this season truly incredible is the fact that it feels completely different from the first season, but that it's such a natural progression that it feels like this is where the story was was supposed to lead us from the start.
The animation plays a big part in that, I think. In earlier seasons everything was super flashy, but now it feels gritty, somehow more violent and heavy, while also having moments of beauty.

I think of Falco as the audience. He has memory loss in order to teach the audience a bit of what's going on without giving away TOO much. And as for him talking about using ODM gear... it's supposed to be us being thrown into the story like... "where did the scouts go? Who are these people? Where are we?" And Falco says, "Who are you people? I was flying with swords in my hand..." etc etc
Replying a year later but I totally don’t think that’s the reason he said that anymore after watching the latest hour long episode haha. Throughout season 4 there have been a lot of under the radar hints I feel to a certain something happening.
Something about gabi being a parallel to younger immature eren its just *cheff kiss* and the fact that no one online noticed and started hating her (understandably so, but after getting more context the people that are STILL hating her without a reasonable reason, are a little bit blind)

Paradis is innocent, as no one on that island has participated in any war except for against the dummy titans. They cannot be blamed as a race for the wars their ancestors waged. Even the attack in Libero Zone was after Marley declared war on them. Gabi is an antagonist and an oppressor from the beginning. While yes, there are SOME parallels but all in all these two are very different.
Falco's comments about his dream of flying with swords and battling titans represents the fandom point of view of this season. You just spent 3 entire seasons with our guys, battling titans and suddenly you are across the sea in a war and with new characters
War is terrible terrible thing. Let's hope that humanity will be more peaceful down the line. Let's hope that we will stop seeing each other as devils and monsters. This show clearly makes a point.
You both are going to start seeing Reiner as one of your favorite characters in the first part of this season for sure. He became, by far, my favorite character in this entire season.

See I can understand Montana saying Bertolt felt like he didn't fit. He was quiet, timid, kept to himself. While Kenny is right in Bertolt having the most powerful titan he also had the most limited. The Colossal titan, while immensely powerful, has more drawbacks than any of the other titans. It's slow, ineffective in direct combat, and cannot last in sustained combat. While the steam and heat are great weapons they come at high prices, rendering the titan completely immobile and consume the titan's own flesh and muscle to produce the steam and heat and thus run down the clock on the shifter's use of the titan the longer the ability is used. Where as the other titans are all suited to direct combat and drawn out engagements and do not have abilities that render them motionless to use nor consume their own bodies to produce said ability.
Yeah in this battle really the best way I could think of to make use of him was to airdrop him first into the center of the fort, have him transform mid drop and blast away the surrounding areas with a steam explosion. Then just pray they don't have the time to shoot him dead before he transforms back.
The peak of the 2d of seasons past I think goes above what the titans of CG can accomplish but the fluidity and ferocity this episodes attack help justify it. Seeing Jaw and Armor run around and fight for much longer sections at a time really sells their might. Mappa did a great job using something that isn't as refined as 2d art in most high quality productions
All of the anime you listed are incredible and I would love to see them, but I’m leaning towards Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. You really can’t go wrong with any of those choices though I’m excited for whichever show you pick.
I noticed from this and the previous episodes you guys completely forgot about how when someone inherits one of the 9 titans they also inherit the memories of their predecessors
For those who don know, middle east allied/opening about war ..its a reference for ww1 especially when they fought Middle east Alliance(ottoman turks).. the weapon, the infamous armoured train, the uniform they wore(fez hats especially)

When I first started season 4, I kept backing out and restarting the episode cause I thought I somehow screwed up and started watching a different show. It wasn’t until Reiner was shown that I knew for sure I was on the right show.

Finally you've reached the Marley arc! Can't wait for you all to catch up completely, it's going to be very interesting to say the least :) For Montana's wonder about Bertholdt - While his demeanor was fairly mousey, Bertholdt was an excellent soldier (well, Warrior, lol). It wasn't shown as much, but he was very atheltic, good at shooting, and overall strong physically with very good grasp of how to use his titan. His only fault was that he was timid and indecisive. This is why he also got ranked in 3rd place in the cadet days, and I think it's generally agreed upon that he (and Annie) wasn't really trying. I personally really enjoyed learning more about the warriors and the Marley systen this season, so can't wait to see your reaction!~
Despite not appearing as "strong" as Annie and Reiner, Berthold also scored in the top 10 of the cadets and could have chosen military police if he wanted. All three of the spies scored that well.
Don't quite agree. While this arc is certainly one of my three favourite arcs in fiction, it's not my favourite. That honour goes to the Marineford arc of the One Piece manga specifically.

To get at what Montana was saying about Reiner and Bertholdt at discussion break 6/6, keep in mind that at that point they had already collapsed the first wall and was directly responsible for the deaths of thousands and indirectly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. Not to mention they still have people back home to worry about.

Ah yes, the Marley Arc. Where Isayama makes us feel for characters we were content to hate, clouds our sense of good and bad guys, makes us question who exactly we *want* to survive in the first place, and turns Eren from a suicidal maniac to a genocidal maniac. 10/10. This arc is like the philosophical version of crack.

I also didn't realized abt Ymir being the former jaw like i didnt think much thru it also at first when i saw the new jaw, i thought it's another titan lol but i figured it's the jaw since they keep mentioning that the cart and jaw will be joining them in the battle later then when Galliard himself spoke abt Ymir, that's when i fully realized wtf happened to her. Fun fact: Soldiers Marleyans fighting are very close depictions of Ottoman soldiers during WW1. In the Japanese VO soldier Falco was helping still speaks Japanese (not sure) in that scene, but I'm pretty surprised to see that here, he actually speaks Turkish in the English Dub.

I think something that makes this season truly incredible is the fact that it feels completely different from the first season, but that it's such a natural progression that it feels like this is where the story was was supposed to lead us from the start.
The animation plays a big part in that, I think. In earlier seasons everything was super flashy, but now it feels gritty, somehow more violent and heavy, while also having moments of beauty.

I think of Falco as the audience. He has memory loss in order to teach the audience a bit of what's going on without giving away TOO much. And as for him talking about using ODM gear... it's supposed to be us being thrown into the story like... "where did the scouts go? Who are these people? Where are we?" And Falco says, "Who are you people? I was flying with swords in my hand..." etc etc
Replying a year later but I totally don’t think that’s the reason he said that anymore after watching the latest hour long episode haha. Throughout season 4 there have been a lot of under the radar hints I feel to a certain something happening.

Paradis is innocent, as no one on that island has participated in any war except for against the dummy titans. They cannot be blamed as a race for the wars their ancestors waged. Even the attack in Libero Zone was after Marley declared war on them. Gabi is an antagonist and an oppressor from the beginning. While yes, there are SOME parallels but all in all these two are very different.

Falco's comments about his dream of flying with swords and battling titans represents the fandom point of view of this season. You just spent 3 entire seasons with our guys, battling titans and suddenly you are across the sea in a war and with new characters

See I can understand Montana saying Bertolt felt like he didn't fit. He was quiet, timid, kept to himself. While Kenny is right in Bertolt having the most powerful titan he also had the most limited. The Colossal titan, while immensely powerful, has more drawbacks than any of the other titans. It's slow, ineffective in direct combat, and cannot last in sustained combat. While the steam and heat are great weapons they come at high prices, rendering the titan completely immobile and consume the titan's own flesh and muscle to produce the steam and heat and thus run down the clock on the shifter's use of the titan the longer the ability is used. Where as the other titans are all suited to direct combat and drawn out engagements and do not have abilities that render them motionless to use nor consume their own bodies to produce said ability.
Yeah in this battle really the best way I could think of to make use of him was to airdrop him first into the center of the fort, have him transform mid drop and blast away the surrounding areas with a steam explosion.
Then just pray they don't have the time to shoot him dead before he transforms back.
I really hope they do Fullmetal. People hate to admit that Deathnote falls off midway through.

I just watched season 4 episode 6 today till 5 am, I'm speechless...
The peak of the 2d of seasons past I think goes above what the titans of CG can accomplish but the fluidity and ferocity this episodes attack help justify it. Seeing Jaw and Armor run around and fight for much longer sections at a time really sells their might. Mappa did a great job using something that isn't as refined as 2d art in most high quality productions
All of the anime you listed are incredible and I would love to see them, but I’m leaning towards Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. You really can’t go wrong with any of those choices though I’m excited for whichever show you pick.
I noticed from this and the previous episodes you guys completely forgot about how when someone inherits one of the 9 titans they also inherit the memories of their predecessors

For Montana's wonder about Bertholdt - While his demeanor was fairly mousey, Bertholdt was an excellent soldier (well, Warrior, lol). It wasn't shown as much, but he was very atheltic, good at shooting, and overall strong physically with very good grasp of how to use his titan. His only fault was that he was timid and indecisive. This is why he also got ranked in 3rd place in the cadet days, and I think it's generally agreed upon that he (and Annie) wasn't really trying.
I personally really enjoyed learning more about the warriors and the Marley systen this season, so can't wait to see your reaction!~

To get at what Montana was saying about Reiner and Bertholdt at discussion break 6/6, keep in mind that at that point they had already collapsed the first wall and was directly responsible for the deaths of thousands and indirectly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. Not to mention they still have people back home to worry about.
