I think the thing that makes a person a hero is doing the right thing no matter the cost. Even though Armin knew he would probably never get to see the sea, he still sacrificed his life so that the Scouts could win. That's what makes him a hero.
Yup. You are exactly right. Halo has similar themes and even Captain America talks about this in the MCU. Heroes are ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

Armin was the one who showed Eren his book and told him about the outside world. Armin was the one who gave Eren the idea of going outside the walls. He gave Eren the idea of freedom. And even when Eren doubted himself, Armin was the one who gave him the motivation to keep going. You can tell that Eren is absolutely devastated by what happened. He doesn't sound sad, he doesn't even sound angry at the end. He just looks and sounds completely and utterly broken. Because his best friend Armin was a hero.

What I love about the Levi vs Beast Titan fight is that Levi is constantly one step ahead. The Beast defends his nape but Levi goes for the eyes, he realises he can't see and Levi is already cutting down his ankles, he notices that his ankles are gone and Levi is already positioning to strike the nape, he tries to harden but Levi is already performing the coup de grace. He didn't stand a chance.
Yup. Imagine if Bertholdt and Reiner were both killed before Bertholdt's transformation. Mikasa AND Levi double teaming Zeke would've easily killed him before the Cart could even react. Unfortunately, plot armor (for both sides) got in the way.

I love how Captain Levi goes for all the vital points on Zeke before ripping him out. Man, it always feels nice seeing peoples genuine reaction to this season. Can’t wait until they see season 4 and how it all ends, because it’s so good so far.
Each one of them has different personalities that's why being "the bravest" is a subjective term. Nevertheless, the courage Armin has shown in this episode is one of a kind. Sacrificing your life, your dream, and your happiness in order to save others made Armin one of the bravest people in the entirety of this show.
I remember putting my hand over my face and crying through the entire credits to this episode. Then when the screen went blank I sat crying and unable to move for several minutes. Truly a legendary episode!
Fun fact; it took Arifumi Imai 1 month to storyboard and 3 months to animate the scene of Levi fighting the Beast Titan. He also animated a number of scenes shown earlier in the show, one being the first fight scene in the very first episode.
4 months of work...WOW!!! It's stuff like this that I always say to manga readers who complain about an anime's animation quality versus a drawing on a panel. Animation takes a long time if you want it to be excellent.
Did you hear that wit studio is being overtaken by mappa to animate another anime again? I can't remember what anime it was but damn it's such a shame. I don't know what is happening with wit studio. They have very talented animators, but seem to be dropping animes left and right half way through its life cycle
WIT had to drop Vinland Saga and MAPPA took it. WIT apparently almost went bankrupt doing AoT so they don't have the resources to take on large projects anymore. It's a shame that this incredible anime almost destroyed an entire studio.

I've been waiting for this and the next episode for a long time. Everyone who's on a rewatch has known what was coming and it's here. Taking a deep breath and heading in because it's a big one and not going to be easy for Montana (and probably not even for us rewatchers, tbh). Dunno if "hyped" it the right word, but it's what I've been in anticipation of for a long while now!
Yeah it was number one for a whole week. Consider how new episodes of television come out every single day. An episode staying number one for a whole week was crazy. It was only overthrown after a king of games episode came out, which was expected. They are practically the equals of anime and western shows. I believe the next episode was number 2 for a while too
Me watching their She-Ra reactions: "oh very good! Montana is making very considered and nuanced arguments about the psychology of Catra and how she's been raised and groomed to be this way. It's very encouraging for the upcoming Attack on Titan episodes going forward that she is able to see the "enemy" like this and understand their perspective." The past 2 episodes: Kenny: "What are your thoughts on Bertholdt?" Montana: "Die." Montana: "Yes, drag him." Me: 😬 (to be a little fair, I know Isayama purposely set it up so we don't know their full stories yet. and also emotions are running high.)

I understand her point of view and the fact that she was raised to be the way she is (sort of sociopathic, with no regard to the lives she takes, a perfect soldier). But I hate that her actions don't give her consequences, but Falco, who is entirely innocent most of the time.

One amazing thing about character growth: I'm now at the part where Levi runs his blade through Zeke's eye. Anyone Montana didn't look away for one second? Zeke was written so well that even she wanted to see him suffer.
When I first saw this episode, I thought it was a masterpiece, I mean it still is but it's crazy that Season 4 has some episodes that are just as good or even better imo. This show is just that amazing that it keeps outdoing itself. Best show ever imo! This episode was the episode where I started saying "This series is the best series of all time." 🐐
The English VAs are good, but the dub sometimes leaves out subtle things important to characters' personalities and their relationships with one another. In dub version, Jean says to Armin, "It took you long enough." But in sub, Jean adds, "It took you long enough, dummy." Jean calling Armin names just reminds me of how close they really are. It's just one word left out but it says a lot to me about their relationship. Speaking of Jean, he doesn't get enough credit for what he's done. Not only was it his plan that took down the armored titan, but he put himself in the most vulnerable spot as the decoy with only his blades to attack.
Sadly, a lot of the time, the dub writers dont get to add certian things or correctly translate stuff like that because they have to fit the lip flaps with editing and voicing the characters. they r not allowed to modify the animation, so dubs tend to lose out or sometimes even gain important details like this
As someone who prefers the sub overall, I’d still argue that the reverse also happens sometimes, where the dubbed version of a line speaks more to a character than the original version. For instance, I think Bertholdt saying “we could live a thousand years and never again know peace” (Season 2) says more about where his head’s at than “we couldn’t come to terms with our sins.”
@@pademelon2216 yes that does happen here and there, also like when English VA Erwin yells “I said advance!” with his arm in a titans mouth whereas original Japanese VA only yells “advance!” But for really the most part I just prefer the subtitles and the Japanese VA. Hearing Jean’s and Levi’s Japanese voices makes my day.
I 100% agree. Talented voice actors, buts god damn sometimes they screw up the translation a little too much. Its not the voice actors fault. The armin final scene had phenomenal voice acting. One of the few times the translation didn't mess it up
Well, we've arrived at the highest rated episode of Attack on Titan, and probably my third favourite episode of the series. And looking at it, it's easy to see why. While Perfect Game was as effective as it was because of how well it wrote the character of Erwin Smith, Hero is as effective as it is because of what it means for the arc. It's the climax of the arc and delivers THE most satisfying scene of the entire series, along with incredible writing for Armin and Eren. Why is this the highest rated episode of any series ever on IMDB? Because it's where the Battle of Shiganshina Arc hits its climax. Prepare yourself.
Armin was defintely the hero of this episode , but imo so was everybody else : Erwin, Levi , Hange , Mikasa , Moblit , Jean, Sasha, Conny , and finally Eren, for getting Bertholdt out of the colossal . ps: Kenny so cute how eager he is to show aot to montana , but like, she's not blind , she can see and hear what's happening , at this point she doesn't need to be walked through this anymore, she's already an aot fan .
“Good drag him” yess the hypocrisy showing in this anime from the reactors is always great. Isayama is a genius for bringing out the villain in all of us and showing our hypocrisy.
What I've never understood was how on earth Isayama made the previous episode so incredibly intense, this one even more so, but then when you thought it was over, the next episode comes along and just ruins your life. I've never had a show before that could make me cry for separate reasons, MULTIPLE EPISODES IN A ROW! Incredible writing on his part!
I just remember watching these 3 episodes for the first time (it was not when they were premiered, so I saw them the same day) crying because I was sad, stressed, and so on.
Two things I love about this episode in English dub. The voice actor for Hange going "now's your chance GET HIM!!!" and Levi's scream when he tears that dood out of the beast titan, you can just hear the pain, rage and satisfaction in his scream all at the same time.
"He's not gonna make that mistake again" HOOO BOY, seeing as they just got to *that part* in season 4 part 2, Kenny's fourth wall glance here didn't even KNOW.
I love that Sasha remembers mikasas speech on either episode six or seven where she learned eren was “dead” and she told everyone if I don’t fight I can’t win

If Bertholdt and Reiner had both been killed before Bertholdt's transformation, the Scouts would've been either to a. Eventually outsmart Zeke with the combined minds of Armin, Hange and Erwin or b. At least retreat with more troops that live to fight another day. It is what it is though. This arc is still my favorite of all the series.

I think that this would be the perfect ending for Armin. He had a beginning, a LOT of development and than an end. An impactful af end. It's such a powerful and emotional scene and Isayama basically said "grab your tears back"

Speaking of Jean, he doesn't get enough credit for what he's done. Not only was it his plan that took down the armored titan, but he put himself in the most vulnerable spot as the decoy with only his blades to attack.
Sadly, a lot of the time, the dub writers dont get to add certian things or correctly translate stuff like that because they have to fit the lip flaps with editing and voicing the characters. they r not allowed to modify the animation, so dubs tend to lose out or sometimes even gain important details like this
As someone who prefers the sub overall, I’d still argue that the reverse also happens sometimes, where the dubbed version of a line speaks more to a character than the original version. For instance, I think Bertholdt saying “we could live a thousand years and never again know peace” (Season 2) says more about where his head’s at than “we couldn’t come to terms with our sins.”
@@pademelon2216 yes that does happen here and there, also like when English VA Erwin yells “I said advance!” with his arm in a titans mouth whereas original Japanese VA only yells “advance!” But for really the most part I just prefer the subtitles and the Japanese VA. Hearing Jean’s and Levi’s Japanese voices makes my day.
I 100% agree. Talented voice actors, buts god damn sometimes they screw up the translation a little too much. Its not the voice actors fault. The armin final scene had phenomenal voice acting. One of the few times the translation didn't mess it up
Well, we've arrived at the highest rated episode of Attack on Titan, and probably my third favourite episode of the series.
And looking at it, it's easy to see why.
While Perfect Game was as effective as it was because of how well it wrote the character of Erwin Smith, Hero is as effective as it is because of what it means for the arc.
It's the climax of the arc and delivers THE most satisfying scene of the entire series, along with incredible writing for Armin and Eren.
Why is this the highest rated episode of any series ever on IMDB? Because it's where the Battle of Shiganshina Arc hits its climax.
Prepare yourself.
I find it kind of funny how Eren's second titan kill without using the Attack Titan was the Colossal.

Armin was defintely the hero of this episode , but imo so was everybody else : Erwin, Levi , Hange , Mikasa , Moblit , Jean, Sasha, Conny , and finally Eren, for getting Bertholdt out of the colossal .
ps: Kenny so cute how eager he is to show aot to montana , but like, she's not blind , she can see and hear what's happening , at this point she doesn't need to be walked through this anymore, she's already an aot fan .

What I've never understood was how on earth Isayama made the previous episode so incredibly intense, this one even more so, but then when you thought it was over, the next episode comes along and just ruins your life. I've never had a show before that could make me cry for separate reasons, MULTIPLE EPISODES IN A ROW! Incredible writing on his part!

Two things I love about this episode in English dub. The voice actor for Hange going "now's your chance GET HIM!!!" and Levi's scream when he tears that dood out of the beast titan, you can just hear the pain, rage and satisfaction in his scream all at the same time.
Did anyone else get chills at the sheer *rage* in Mikasa's voice when she said "Reiner, it's over!"?

I think those are details that you notice later on while rewatching or through the fandom, not whilst you're in emotional anguish because there's total chaos on the screen.

I was never a big fan of Armin but he still made me tear up here. That kind of sacrifice always does it for me.
If Bertholdt and Reiner had both been killed before Bertholdt's transformation, the Scouts would've been either to a. Eventually outsmart Zeke with the combined minds of Armin, Hange and Erwin or b. At least retreat with more troops that live to fight another day.
It is what it is though. This arc is still my favorite of all the series.

I think that this would be the perfect ending for Armin. He had a beginning, a LOT of development and than an end. An impactful af end. It's such a powerful and emotional scene and Isayama basically said "grab your tears back"
