I really appreciate that this show values dialogue as much as action, and this episode is one of the best examples. It builds tension because we know Eren can transform at any given moment, but also with Willy's play and Reiner and Eren's conversation. Truly one of the best episodes Attack on Titan has to offer.

Correct. It's for this same reason that other action scenes, such as Eren's first fight with Reiner, carry a lot of weight. The dialogue is very personal, emotional, and genuine.

It’s a Hitchcock kind of device. Suspense is created from seeing the bomb and watching it count down. When there is a sudden out of nowhere explosion you have a few seconds of shock vs the 20 or so minutes of suspense and dread we have here. Eren is a bomb and knowing he holds the lives of Liberio in his hands is terrifying.

Willy: I do not wish to die..because i was born into this world.
    Eren: Hmm.
    Reiner: Please, kill me.
    Eren: No
Eren isn't even angry. Before, he was so filled with rage that he could barely hold himself back from screaming. But now, he's so calm as he threatens to blow up and destroy a building. He's so nonchalant about it. It really raises the tension.

Just like reiner wanted to become a hero and thus he broke wall and continued to attack eren rather than mere propaganda he was in.
Eren now sympathizes with outside world, but he will still love forward because he is determined to realize the freedom he saw in armins book and have a right to exist and explore the outside world.
While protecting his friends is also his motivation but there is more selfishness to it as well.

Pay close attantion to the structure of Eren's and Reiner's dialoge: Eren starts with the "we are similar". Next, he starts pushing Reiner by ironicly repeating that Reiner had no choice, while Reiner still thinks that Eren came here ro have his revenge and that he is the old ignorant and fuled by anger Eren. When Reiner finally snaps, he tells the truth: he did this horrible thing not because he had to, but because he wanted to. And that is why he is so depressed - he regrets his decisions and he hates himself for what he was. Because, even though he lived with island Eldians and understood that they are all regular humans and he is a mass murderer and not a saviour of the world, he still kept moving forward to finish the mission, because he wanted to become a hero. Eren concludes with: "just as I thought, we are the same".

Finally someone who articulated it in such a beautiful way.
      There is selfishness to everyone.
And everyone does it because they made the choice.
There is no "no" choice. There is always a choice. Eren understood it. He knew that whatever he was and is doing is a choice he made, a product of his nature and wants and the circumstances.
This conversation is very much important because now it makes eren work for more than just revenge.
It is also something for which he probably hates himself for, but will still move forward

Precisely. The only way the timeline of AOT would significantly change is if Zeke's or Eren's mind got changed. Or if they were both just killed.
When you have someone like Eren who is dead set on accomplishing their goals and taking bloody revenge, it doesn't matter if you get all the nations of the world in your side. As we will see when Kenny and Montana reach the later episodes.

In my opinion, this is the best episode of Attack on Titan. Not only due to the unbearable rising tension, but because the power dynamics have completely switched. After we learned to empathize with Reiner in those past few episodes, we are now suddenly concearned for his well-being and feel bad for him, even though he was the antagonist for several seasons.
Meanwhile, the protagonist we rooted for all this time has changed so much to the point of being unrecognizable that we can't help but feel intimidated by him. He's a literal bomb under the table and we're dreading when he's gonna explode. Just when the "enemy" is facing judgement, we're starting to question if it is even worth it.

Willy wasn't necessarily lying about Paradis. Just like the Scouts in the first three seasons, Marley is working with limited information on their enemy. Their new info comes from the surviving Warriors, but most importantly Reiner and Bertholdt's account of Eren commanding titans back in season 2. They had no way of knowing that Eren just so happened to touch a titan of royal blood (let alone his father's first wife and Zeke's mother). So they came to the conclusion that Eren always has this ability available. This, along with Marley's initial attack on the Walls and the island's coup, makes the possibility of Eren activating the Rumbling all the more real.

    • @presidenttogekiss635
      @presidenttogekiss635 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Then why did they decide to attack THEN? It would make sense for them to attack if they thought Eren couldnt acess the power, so they could take it before it was too late. But if they though Eren had the ability to launch the Rumbling, why would they start an attack that would result in their own destruction?
It´s like attacking a nation you know has a gigantic nuclear arsenal. Do you think they won´t USE IT?!!!

@@presidenttogekiss635 This answer is actually easy if you understand the characters. They attacked because they knew Eren would initiate the rumbling when he found out how to. It was only a matter of time. Reiner remarks that Eren is the worst person to have the Founding Titan because he is quite possibly the most emotionally broken character on the show, and a rage monster to boot. To put it simply, they attacked because they believed Eren had not yet figured out how to use the Founding Titan to the fullest of its abilities - which includes activating the rumbling. So to use your analogy, it was more like Eren had a nuke that he didn't know how to launch but was actively figuring it out. Starting out this episode, I noticed a stark difference in Eren sub and dub inflection. Dub Eren sounds REALLY ominous ans threatening while sub Eren sounds really casual, like he's literally catching up with an old friend.
It truly gives a different feel for the scene while being somehow equally threatening in their own way. Pretty interesting.

I’ve meaning to say for a while that I really appreciate the effort and work you both put in to post these videos every week. Your channel has grown so much since I first started watching it, I’m sometimes shocked at how far it’s come since way back when you posted your TikTok reactions to Avatar, Kenny.
I still remember when I came across those old TikTok videos. I was scrolling through and saw an old TikTok of you reacting to Avatar with Montana, since I used to love that show, I was excited to see someone react to it. After a few days, I noticed someone post a comment that you had a TH-cam channel. When I looked it up, you were already at season 3 of Avatar. That’s when I subscribed and have been watching the channel grow ever since. I watched all of your Korra reactions, and was very excited when you chose to react to the AOT anime since I happen to also be a huge anime fan ❤️ .
But when you announced you’d start reacting to She-Ra, I didn’t think it would be all that interesting. But then I noticed that Netflix had the whole series, so I thought I’d see for myself if it was good later on or not. I was shocked to learn how interesting and fascinating the show really was, it blew my expectations away. Since then, I chose to go back and watch the reactions. I think it was a great idea now in hindsight.
I just wanted to share my journey watching your channel and how it’s changed my viewpoints on shows. I think the way you analyze each show is very fun to watch and informative as well. And most of all, I want to thank you for entertaining us every week, and I hope the channel continues to grow even more.

26:15 one big difference (for me, at least) is in the people committing the act of waging war/mass murder. reiner and the other candidates were children, the product of indoctrination, carrying out orders on strangers (eldians, thought to not even be human) for the sake of their families' safety. that doesn't justify what they did, but it explains it and makes them more sympathetic characters. eren, on the other hand, is committing these murders as an adult, knowing full well the humanity of each person he is about to kill, knowing full well the effects these actions had on himself, and choosing to do it anyway. he is informed throughout every step of this process in a way the warriors only were once they infiltrated. as he said himself, he's pushed his own back into hell and therefore he sees a different hell.

Something a lot of reactors don't pick up on is the whole point of Eren telling Reiner that he's a victim. It wasn't to reassure him or take the guilt off his shoulders. He wanted Reiner to confess that it was *his* choice to break the wall. It was *his* choice to continue the mission, even after learning that the people of Paradis weren't the monsters they were believed to be. Because Eren, despite spending time with the enemy and coming to the same conclusion that Reiner had, still chooses to go forward with his own plan. He wants Reiner to know this before all hell breaks loose. The only difference between them is that Reiner has lost his drive and most of his will to live. What gets me about the whole 2000 years of Eldians killing folks with titans.. that was also like 500-1000 years ago, right? No one alive lived through that, the Eldians in the internment zone had nothing to do with it either. The world could of turned around and ignored the island but it's flat out stated that since the titans will be an obsolete weapon of war in a hundred years they need the resources under the island to keep their military better equipped. And once the titans are no longer the best weapon that will more than likely (from just like, history of earth point of view) mean Marly will go through the internment zones and execute every Eldian.
The only Eldians left for the 9 titans to re-incarnate into would be those on Paradis, and had they had no contact with the outside world Paradi would of just been like, "Why do these titans just show up in our walls randomly? We kill them but like clock work every 7 years a random person seems to turn into these titans" and they'd be crushed from the inside..
What i'm trying to say is, they could of easily left Paradis alone but that would of meant Marly not having the overwhelming oppressive advantage and having to fight a legit fair war when the countries they invaded decide they want to liberate themselves.
War was declared the second they started sending prisoners to the island as titans as far as I'm concerned
Episode 6 is hands down the best episode. Marly has been fighting wars on every other country they have no idea how to handle an actual attack on their own land

Even if the Tyburs never declared war it wouldn't have made a difference. No country in its right mind would ever have accepted the possibility of a an industrialized Paradis, since it would have left the world in a position of being conquered with out being able to retaliate.

Attack on Titan's world geography is the same as Earth except it's flipped. Paradis island is Madagascar in our world, Marley is the entire continent of Africa, Europe and the Middle East. We can see a map of Marley and Paradis in s3 ep20 "That Day", but the most detailed map we saw was in the most recent episode, s4 ep27. When you know it's just our world flipped upside down you notice it instantly when looking at a map. So keep that in mind for when you get there.
So yeah, Paradis island is nowhere close to the size of the USA.
In the mid episode info card of the very first episode it's said that there's about 100 km between wall Maria and Rose, 130 km between wall Rose and Sina and 250 km(?!?) from wall Sina to the center. But these dimensions are probably all false, as it doesn't make any sense.
Keep in mind that this info doesn't come from the manga or the episode itself, it's from the "Currently Publicly Available Information" given in the middle of the episode. Also, it's from 2013, when AoT was just starting and even manga readers didn't have a good idea of the world. I don't know if these dimensions were just a guess made by the team who worked on this episode or if Isayama himself didn't know (or is just bad with numbers).
Anyways, we now know the size of Paradis island and we've seen several maps of it with the walls that were always consistent. When looking at these map we see that Wall Maria has a diameter of about 250 km, so there's about 40 km from one wall to the other.
It makes a lot more sense, because every time we've seen characters travel from one wall to another it took a few hours, not a full day or multiple days needed to travel 100+ km.
Remember when I said that Isayama is bad with numbers? Well that could actually be true. In this episode Willy said that there's tens of millions of titans in the walls, and I think it was also said in s3 ep20 "That Day".
Well, if you try to calculate how many titans are in the walls using the more coherent dimensions I mentioned previously, you find that there's a little less than 100,000 titans in the walls.
Even when using the dimensions from episode one you don't get more than half a million if I remember correctly...

My main issue with this episode is: the reason Marley and the rest of the world didnt attack Paradis was because they KNEW if they did it, the king would destroy them all. Then Tyber says that he never meant to, and that the titan was stolen, and NOW the threat is real. and they decide to ATTACK?
Like, you´ve just been told that if you do that, the world will end for real. So why do this suicide run? It´s like declaring war on a nation with a gigantic nuclear arsenal. There´s a reason it doesnt happen in the real world.

"there's no difference between what Reiner and Eren did". I completely disagree. Reiner was a brainwashed child who didn't know any better, he was forced to do it and ultimately regretted his actions. Eren is an adult who now has the full picture, he chose violence on his own and with no remorse.

Just wondering, would you two be reacting to movies in the future? Even if not on youtube, I would recommend The Aviator (Martin Scorsese) (OCD--a condition that I have, so I can relate to this movie a lot), Princess Mononoke (Hayao Miyazaki) (environmentalism), and possibly Requiem for a Dream (Darren Aronofsky) (addiction)--I'm giving this last recommendation with some trepidation, because, despite it being my favorite movie of all time (currently--as well as one of my favorite pieces of media, period) it's very heavy with its subject matter and imagery, which led the Director's Cut to being unrated--however, there is an R-rated version with a particular scene edited. Plus, you might even recognize the score, as the main theme has been used in numerous movie trailers since then, though it was originally created for this film.
