  • My John Suscovich Chicken Tractor Electric Fence (Wire) Explained shows how I hooked up an electric strand to keep predators from tunneling under the tractor. John does a good job of explaining his chicken tractor in his book and on his TH-cam channel. The one issue I found with everything is his design was for multiple chicken tractors and I only have one. Because I only have one chicken tractor, I can hook mine up totally different than his and make the electric wire more mobile especially in very hard soil.

    Lessons Learned:
    1) the wire is 6" high and the wheels are 9" high. This causes the wheel to rub on the wire. It did not cause an issue for me as I take the wheels off when not moving the tractor.

Brilliant! This is the best solution I've seen for protecting a mobile chicken tractor. Thanks for the great idea and explanation.

Learning how to install electric fence to protect my small flock from predators and your video helps a lot!I don't have a chicken tractor but I'll be permanently attaching the electric fence to keep out diggers!

@@greatescapefarms I live in West Virginia as well and was wondering if you've ever had a problem with weasels getting in your tractors?I only have a small flock of 6 layers and can't afford to have any losses. They're also my pets ! I used 1/2" hardware covered pallets to make a 8 x 16 run for my hens and need to know if one 6" wire is enough to keep weasels out? Thanks!

@@Yeshuaschosen I have not had a problem with (or even seen weasels around). I would think this would keep weasels out, but like I say, I don't have any experience with them.

So for an update are you still using this system and have you had any more losses?

We are still using the chicken tractor and have had no losses as a result of the tractor or its design. We have standardized on moving the young chicks from the brooder to the chicken tractor. They spend the summer into fall in the chicken tractor to grow out and then we integrate them with the other birds in the coop and run in the fall.
