I bought grandchild today, compared it with "fairchild" plugins and was surprised at how big the difference is. I thought some plugins should perform a lot better. Now i see why there is so much hype about hardware fairchilds).
Wow, lots of mojo 🤟🏼 I’m going to listen in my studio on the mains tonight before I shut down the system. Finally upgraded my computer and interfaces so almost ready to swap them out 😊
@Chaos-Dynamics it's impressive how much mojo they got into 500 series. In the description there's a link to high quality audio files you can download and reference in your own studio direct from your DAW.
@Rhuggins that video is coming. I'm using quite aggressive settings to show its capabilities. The audio examples on the website are a little more subtle and real world settings used.
@owlmuso yeah I really surprised me. I didn't have high hopes for it and was pleasantly surprised and impressed they were able to fit it into 500 series.
I'm in the same boat as you - wasn't expecting much (Herchild's too bright compared to a Fairchild), but I'm impressed with this one! The only con I see is the lack of an output trim.
@aleksamrkela831 Yeah, this is the huge benefit we have with owning the unfairchild with the assessory box. It gives the unfairchild an output gain, which is really useful. It is in keeping with the original fairchild design.
Its impressive how much this add to the source incrediblle man!! dont know the original fairchild but this 500 series sounds top!! do you think this 670 is also beneficial in electronic genre more 4 to the floor technoish stuff???
@@marianolarocca-ionique5027 yeah would work great over more electronic genres. It compared really well with the fairchild. Obvious different but captured what the fairchild is. I was very impressed.
@lifermusik I personally chose the Wes Audio Rhea. Mainly because it has digital recall. They sound similar. I wouldn't say ones better than the other. I'm impressed with the Grandchild, but it's not a fairchild. But it's not crazy far off. Has its own sound.
Paul, I have an Elysia Alpha compressor (hardware), a Manley Variable MU limiter compressor (hardware), and a RND Portico II Master Bus Processor (hardware). How important is it to purchase an Unfairchild? In your experience, is my current equipment already giving me what the Unfairchild brings to the table? Does the Unfairchild do something my current equipment cannot do? If the Unfairchild does something my equipment can't do, would a better option be to buy the McDSP APB and use the C673-A (or their other compressors) instead of an Unfairchild? Thanks. Mark Cole
@markcole4001 the unfairchild will get a better sound than the mcdsp that's for sure. The mcdsp is awesome. I have a little insider info for you regarding mcdsp. Next week is a huge sale around 33% off a mcdsp apb 16. I've just bought 2 get 1 free. That deal will be live on SX Pro next week. Due to your current chain, the unfairchild won't bring as much to you as it would to something else. It'll still bring something great to the chain. I have an alpha, shadow hills and unfairchild in the same chain. All have their own sound and can be used together. One thing the unfairchild does bring you is the ability to say you have an unfairchild. We get lots of clients coming to us because they want their song run through the unfairchild.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Honestly you were on such a streak, I'm amazed you've created and posted so much content while running the mixing/mastering business, building new studios, and having a family! Hope some time off from TH-cam was enjoyable!
@jeffbaumet794 for mixing purposes could have the vandergraph on vocals and the Grandchild on drums. For mastering purposes it would be another flavour of compression. I used to own the dual vandergraph and it felt equally as good but very different.
@MrGastrax side chain filter is off in these examples. I find it not very practical to have it on the inside of the module. But understand there's limited room on the front panel.
What I've heard is, that "it doesn't sound like a Fairchild" isn't a valid statement, as no Fairchild sounds like another Fairchild. It's a curse and a blessing for manufacturers of clones.
@Sagerydian this is true of older units. The new reissue if setup the same will sound alike. And when I compared this Grandchild directly to the fairchild, it captured every essence of what a fairchild does but didn't sound like a fairchild 1 for 1. Has its own sound inspired by a fairchild.
Blown away on this. Will be purchasing, good for warm compression, fattens things up very nice and wide.Wide variety of uses
A tool is a tool. I love heritage audio and their builds compared to other companies I won’t name

Those switches are pickup selectors from a Telecaster! That looks perfect!
@1loveMusic2003 it's a very similar look to the Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph. The switch are nice and weighty.

Cool. I find it to sound rather aggressive. Id love to hear a comparison with a real one. You are in a very unique position to do that 😊

This sounds like a beast. Thanks for an awesome review Paul. Is there a noise floor issue considering its a 500 series unit?
@owlmuso not something I noticed as being over the top
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Cool man, thank you. Its amazing to get such quality and legacy in the 500 series

Great video Paul!!! I really hope to see more. I also thought you stopped using 500 series units?
@@braxal6983 I have stopped using 500 series. I had to borrow a 500 series rack off SX Pro. But I am considering adding a rack for mixing purposes.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Awesome! I like to see it.
Hey Paul, what do you think about stamchild 670 II
@OfficialAlexZitto I'm getting one in soon to test and review. I will be able to give a very detailed honest opinion once I have it.
Thanks Paul.
How does this compare with the Wes audio Rhea? A shootout would be nice if you could swing. I’m trying to decide between the two.

Love how it looks like some kind of Soviet-era missile silo control panel.

@@CT-ho6si it's nice to be back. I had a few very important film deadlines to meet that required me to work very long hours. Good job I love it.
under what circumstances would you put this in the same rack as a dual vandergraph? i ask because i already have the latter and love it.

Judging by the action of the compressor it seems you didn't use any of the side chain HPF options... or if so, which one?

@ryanyates8090 haha sorry, how do you think it is for me. I find it really difficult to let this gear go back and I always end up keeping it.

@jamesrisoto7729 another very impressive 500 series module
