  • On this episode of the Hockey Cards Gongshow podcast we start by honoring the NHL's (almost) greatest player to wear the number 3 for episode 203 (5:02). Next Mitch Gropman joined the show to debate Josh on the merits of one of our recent social media posts about a record Cale Makar sale and his thoughts on if we should have posted it given some potential red flags (15:31). Rookie Deep Dive returns and this week we learned all about former Golden Gopher and current Utah Hockey Club player Logan Cooley (1:00:46). In hobby news, yet another $2M worth of baseball cards stolen and is Kirill Kaprizov a grizzly bear hunter (1:17:05)? Mark Hill from My Card Post joins the show to update us on the unique buying, selling and trading marketplace he's built and what life is like as a little guy trying to compete with big companies in his hobby entrepreneurial journey (1:26:40). We end the show highlighting our favorite vintage and modern hockey cards in the current PWCC Weekly auction (2:34:09).

    I agree with Mitch without appropriate context these posts of high sales can do more disservice than service. There is no balance such as also posting low record sales of cards which can actually possibly be more valuable to the hobby to report of how the card market is trending.

    I had a discussion with an LCS about buying a high end Brady auto and they used card ladder comps against me about discussing what is the actual value of a card. I wonder from Mitch’s point about posting “single data point” and “Data Courtesy of Card Ladder” may be too “lax” maybe remind the readers of the post that “Single Data Point Courtesy of Card Ladder”.

    Do we know the print run of this Makar card or have an educated guess of its scarcity or rarity?

  • @SebastienCardinal
    @SebastienCardinal 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    On my personnal perspective, the less a card is print, /1 /5 /10 /25 the less the eBay comp makes sense. I mean, you can’t ONLY use 1 sale on a /10 card to set a value. If I had one of these Makar card. Let’s say Someone selling 1 at $100 wouldn’t make a new statement of value. I would tell the buyer to find another one at $100. The same applies to this sale. This comp system works well on YG or /999 FWA nothing short printed. You wouldn’t take only one comp on a YG sale. Why would we do it on a /10 card ?

    I joined MCP after seeing it here and I have not had any positive experiences. My card focus might be too narrow, but I listed ~40 cards at or below Ebay comps with an even lower minimum offer price. The offers I received overpriced their cards (and when I made counter offers closer to ebay comps they canceled the transaction.) I did get one cash offer at my minimum which I accepted to get a completed deal but the buyer backed out after we agreed on a price. I've sent several messages asking about people's card and didn't get any reply. I'm sticking around to the end of the month but right now I don't expect to stay around.
    The Howe is part of the set (Card 193,) but the one you showed is an error (as you mentioned.)

    • @mycard_post
      @mycard_post 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, I'm very sorry to hear that. How can I best support you?
      Having minimum offer prices set can prevent attempted buyer cash offers from reaching you (as they get an error saying the offer doesn't meet your minimum). My preference is to always set minimum offers to $1 or 1%, as I'd rather receive any offer from an interested buyer (even if low) and attempt to negotiate with them and find a deal (or not, which is okay too).
      Another tip is to look at our leaderboards from some of the most active members/traders and attempt deals with them, as you can almost guarantee a fair negotiation and response.
      Even with me... I just looked at your page and am very interested in that Stature Jeremy Swayman RPA! :)

      @@mycard_post The marketplace is the marketplace and your clients clearly can do as they please. I never understand why a client would list on your MCP platform the same prices as they do on their eBay store. I understand this is not an issue for MCP but to be more transparent, lesser fees for your platform users may not translate to lower fees or costs for us who strictly buy on your platform.

    The new "record sale" for the Makar Cup card is a fake sale, nobody is paying that much even if it is a psa 10. I paid a fraction for my Makar number 1/12 The Cup Gold RPA. I don't blame you for bringing attention to this fake sale but newbies need to know this is how the game is sadly played at times and to realize this is a fake sale.
    I'm a big fan of My Card Post, anything that can help lower fee's is good for the hobby. I'm going to the National in a few weeks, I will be scouring only for hockey cards so I will report back and let you guys know what the scene is like for hockey cards .

      Excellent point similar to what Mitch made about newcomers or "newbies" being possibly misled and thus the these posts. Again if you want to to continue posting "high record sales" then perhaps provide more context or not do it all. I have found the information to be not relevant without context but still put a "like" on the posts.

    I don't know what Mitch thinks the Gongshow's responsibility is in making a social media post, but it seems like he believes they are a media outlet that should be double and triple checking facts. Turns out it sale was confirmed in real time during the interview, so now what? The post was still wrong? Everyone just take a breath.
    I love the innerwebs, but I loved it a lot more before everyone on it was an "expert" ruining all the fun.

    *HYPERBOLIC STATEMENT ALERT* Is expecting comp pricing killing the hobby?
    Dont we all want our cards to increase in value? That is hard to do when everyone knows what everyone else has paid for every card, and expects that to hold in perpetuity. And If everyone expects to always pay the same price, where are the margins for sellers supposed to come from? If a reseller's "85% of comps" buy-rate gets reported, or if they snipe an auction under value, that lower price becomes the new comp! Its a vicious cycle. I rely on resellers/flippers for 95% of my inventory and PC, so want them to be able to afford to stay in business.

    • @hockeycardsgongshow
      @hockeycardsgongshow  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Appreciate your feedback but disagree that it's a disservice to post sales that we find are interesting. We like seeing record sales and present that they happened then in every case ask the viewer what they think. We're less concerned with our opinion or editorialization and more interested in what the community thinks.

    • @78rlewi
      @78rlewi 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Can you expand on your statement that this is a disservice to the viewers?
      My response is the guys are taking the most accurate information that they or we have available as collectors to verify a paid for sale. Although this was verified as a legitimate sale sure, there could be that one which is total b.s but I wouldn’t call their approach to provide collectors information on new record sales a disservice. Do your due diligence (everyone) and fact checking if you disagree before just calling out that something is fake without checking for yourself.

      @@78rlewi Mitch pointed some items that there could be more context especially for new collectors. I was left with the impression without context "oh look at how Makar cards must be on the rise". Context would be to give an indication of how scarce or rare this card is. Mitch mentioned providing the last 3 comps. Mitch suggested putting in the post that this represents "one data point" and thus the word "data" could be interpret at pleural. The "disservice" is the "lack of context:".
