TANTE JU! ♥ Junkers JU 52 Scenic Flight from Gstaad
- DEAR AUNTY JU
Proudly standing skywards with your nose in the wind, gently carried by wings. The three BMW radial engines are music to the ears, an unmistakable sign that a Junkers JU 52 appears. Your corrugated skin is light-weighted and thin but enormously robust to withstand every wind.
You are airborne within a few hundred meters, that is when the modern aircrafts feel dethroned and believe in a malfunction of the thrust lever. Those technically sophisticated planes are equipped with touch screen, it is a dream or the last scream. But your cockpit has hardly changed, it is well-arranged.
During wartime you flew day and night without a trace of fright. Many brave soldiers flew towards an unknown fate. You meant the last connection to entire armies before they had to fight until the bitter end. You brought many wounded soul back, saved lives and reunited the returning soldiers with their loved ones.
There are so many stories to tell. A spectacular one happend in the Swiss avalanche winter (1951) when it was snowing like hell. Aunty JU distributed many relief goods which were dropped by parachute. Wool blankets, bread and even hay for the cattle, a big help to fight against the hard winter battle.
The end of work has never really come because you are so awesome. You are used to long queues because people are so amused by flying with dear Aunty JU - Tante JU. Your success story may never come to an end, you are a beloved flying legend.

It's wonderful that old birds like this are kept flying and people can still experience them. Great video!
Thank you for the compliment.
Beautiful plane with a tragic story
True! Thank you for watching.
they seem to fly remarkably well, despite their age. excellent machines .
Was für ein göttlicher Klang, absolut wahnsinnig! Thanks to Matt!
Danke vielmals!
Wonderful plane. With that I made my first parachute jumps six, very many years. Thank you Matthias. ;-)
+Paco Jimenez Thank you very much! Pretty sure that the parachute jump was a great experience. Indeed an admirable plane!
Now that is a classic, excellent video of this beautiful aircraft Matthias! Love the multiple views, I hope the flight was great.
+TheHDAviation Thank you very much for your kind words! Much appreciated!! It was a dream come true! I dreamt since childhood about a flight with this good old airplane.
What a nice touch the BMW logo on the cowlings. These engines can produce an awesome sound.
Yeah, what's with the BMW logo?
Yeah why
My guess is that the Junkers Ju 52 ran the BMW 132 engines. Not sure if these are the original engines, though.
Still one of the most iconic aircraft of WW2, she looks as beautiful as she sounds!

After viewing various videos of this, their DC-3, their Constellation and others, I have to say this: the Swiss REALLY know how to take good care of an airplane!
Dread Penguinlord That comment didn't age well :/
Well, they do build airplanes (Pilatus) and clocks. Among other things.
Wow! What can I say, you are so lucky to be able to fly in these rare and old aircraft. The video was beautiful made as always and was an absolute pleasure to watch! Thank you for sharing this with us.
+cpockettsAviation Oh thank you very much for your kind words!! Much appreciated!! I dreamt since childhood about a flight with this good old airplane. A dream came true!
My goodness, what a beautiful aircraft !
Thank you!
Dear Matthias:
I could probably write an entire magazine article commenting on this video of our much-loved Tante Ju: about your MESMERIZING Poetic Letter, about how this puts me in a mood for living, about the timeless "MUSIK DES FLIEGENS" of those radial engines, and so on.
But it's so MUCH MORE than that.
Since I joined your absolutely splendid channel and visited your website-blog, I have gained a deep and abiding affection for the Swiss-Austrian-German Aviation Community. So it's only natural that the August accident of Aunt Ju HB-HOT hurts me to the tears.
So There, My Friend, all I can say is the following:
May this Masterpiece of a Video be an Eternal TRIBUTE to Those who died and suffer! May it remain perpetual, even when Aunt Ju is no longer able to fly! And come to think of it, Matt, May ALL of your Extraordinary Effort, your Channel, your Talent and your Enthusiasm be THE GRANDEST TRIBUTE OF THEM ALL!!!
Yours Truly,
JAVIER.
Hi Javier, thank you so much for your great thoughts and kind words. I appreciate them very much. The accident was a real nightmare. Only highly experienced pilots military and airline pilots flew this aircraft. The Ju52 was painstakingly serviced and was in a great condition. So it is hard to understand why this crash happened. May the victims rest in peace and the relatives find good comfort.
Damn, Switzerland is the most beautiful country on earth, the cleanliness wow.
I know I haven't been commenting much but I gotta at least say how much I love this one....
Ich liebe die Tante JU...
What a very nice old lady!! Great experience flying old birds! We flew a dc3 a few months ago. It's great to have a good taste of aviation history!
+Aviation NLNZ Thank you very much! Oh wow a DC-3 flight is also very impressive! True, I especially love the good old planes!
A lovely and great preserved beauty and, more, with original BMW made engines !!!
Gorgeous sounds, gorgeous scenery.
Thank you!
Herrlich :) Top Sound.!!
+RCHeliJet Danke vielmals!
A piece of history....beautiful
I love JU !!
Masterpiece of aviation history
It is an amazing aircraft and a workhorse in World War II.
@@MattsAviationChannel yes , during WW2 , hundreds of this plane were used by Luftwaffe on all front
Beautiful airplane.
Thank you! The Junkers JU 52 is a classic and truly iconic aircraft.

Felicitaciones!.
Thank you!!
I remember seeing a Ju-52 flying over London into a strong headwind. It was barely moving relative to the ground. Of course I saw and heard more of them when I was living in Dübi.
Yes, it always seems like they’re barely moving. Those good old planes hold some of my good memories. But let’s face it-the pilots definitely made some shocking mistakes along the way. They are grounded for strong reasons.
I loved this video. Could not be better; For kill the homesickness of ancient times! Thank you very much...
Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated.
Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Poesie in Wort und Bild! Alle Daumen hoch!
+dvldi Danke vielmals! :)
Amazing aircraft!! Great video my friend!!
Imagine flying this into Stalingrad in January 1943...
Duarrr anti air
And Imagine jumping out of it, as a paratrooper...

Excellent film footage and sound.
Thank you Lorenzo!
The real air 'bus' (large windows) 😆
That was truly so enjoyable!! There is something hard to pin down about radial engines. They look so 'old' but actually in practice they are silky smooth and powerful. They do not seem strained at all like the modern screaming jet turbine engine.. radials, i LOVE them :)
Cracking video Matt...really enjoyable....loved your inspired description....well done...a big like from me....Dear old Aunty Ju...
Cheers....Steve.~
+Steve Lewis Video Channel. Thank you Steve! I was dreaming since childhood about a flight with this good old airplane.
Well it was a dream that came true !
Beautiful airplanes I actually got to see one live a few times.
I got about an hour stick time in one of these. It belonged to the Commemorative Air Force and had been rebuilt at Fort Collins, CO. They wanted to get it to Midland, Texas to be painted and offered to let anyone who was willing to buy the fuel to fly it down there (with a qualified pilot in the left seat) Five of us popped for the flight and each of us got about an hour flying it. We spent most of our time trying to get all three engines in sync.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope you enjoyed it. So I guess it is the last airworthy JU 52 in the States?
Muito lindo esse avião 🙌🙌🙌
Muito obrigado pelo seu comentário!! 🙌✈️❤️
Great sight and sound. Nice to see and hear the old beauty practically in its original state. :-)
+flybyplane Thank you! A wonderful and admirable aircraft indeed. It dreamt since childhood about a flight with this good old JU 52. A dream came true.
Fantastic many congratulations for this travel .
Wonderful machine that also flew in Bolivia for many years, soaring through cold winds of andes mountains, pioneering the development of bolivian aviation.
Thank you!
Thank thank you for these video JU-52 i have one thousand and five hundred hours JU.52
Thank you!! Great to hear!
You lucky man Matthias to fly in such wonderful classic aircraft. I loved the letter to a Dear Aunt. Wonderful, thanks for sharing my friend.
+IRISHROVER Thank you so much Chonaill. Glad you liked my poem about Aunty Ju! :) The flight was a dream come true! I dreamt since yearly childhood about a flight with this good old airplane. Have a nice day! Cheers, Matt
+matthiashaenni Have a great weekend Matt.
Beautiful video, wonderful plane, Thanks.
Thank you very much!
The best! loved every minute!
Today i seated in exactly this machine. It was in a museum. Sadly there no big chance to see them in the sky again. The crash gave them the rest. Many times i saw one of these over our house. When i heard them, i ran out and i knew what type of plane is coming and i had always enjoyed that. I hope one of these will fly sometimes again but i have less hope:(
Aha what a great engine sound ! nice video Matthias!
+theDoubleH63 Thank you!
Wow !!!!!!!!!
Now this was a very strange looking , but very interesting aircraft!!!!
It was awesome inside and out!
Like I said before, it's not fair that you get to have all the fun !!
I am glad that I got to see this great video on this day , my birthday! ( June 10th, 2021 )
Best birthday present today !
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💯
Hi congratulations on your birthday! Wishing you all the best!
Sadly the aircraft is grounded because its sister aircraft JU 52 crashed in the Swiss Alps. It was a fatal accident due to pilot errors. What a tragedy!
@@MattsAviationChannel
Oh wow !!
So sorry to hear that .
🙏🙏
Aunty Julie 💖! I would name her Cloud Chaser. " Wolkenjäger"
She is at home in the air as a kestrel.
Tri -Motor BMW radials their symbol is a stylized spinning propeller. This craft has a bit of a likeness to the Ford Tri -Motor.
Enjoyed watching and going on the ride with you.
Thank you! I can highly recommend a flight to you :) Cheers Matt

Great sound!
Thank you!
that sound at 2:00, music in my ears...
Matthias, love your videos! Thanks for uploading these :) Please include more of the interior of the cabin. Thanks!
+karlhschro Thank you very much for your kind words! Much appreciated! Cheers, Matt
So sad to hear about crash
That sound... I used to run to the window every time I heard it. One of these machines made round-trips over my hometown, we regarded seeing her as a sort of good-luck-event.
This plane is the backbone of the Luftwaffe transport unit during World War II , hundreds were used on all fronts
Hi Steven, yes it was an enormous workhorse during World War II.
We have lost a beloved Tante JU?
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simplesmente LINDO!
Bester Motoren-Sound!
Beautiful
fantastic!!!!!!
l worked on one at a Gold coast museum back in the 1970s, it was originally from archerfield airport and l don't know where it went after that, somewhere in Australia l supose. l love the DC3s best streemline aircrarft going.
incredible experience !! and perfectly filmed ! well done !
Thank you very much!
Excellent take-off, landing and flight, in a classic aircraft. Well done video.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂

Beautiful aircraft. Truly a great airplane.
Solid and Reliable Airplane.
A Flying Jeep!
Beatiful plane
Thank you so much!
Wow, the sound is awesome
old but gold 👍💪👊🛩🛩🛩
Thank you ✈️ 👍
Happy weekend, Karin
Many thanks for posting this. What great sound & excellent video work as is your DC-3. I thought the female passenger gave a rather nervous smile! keep up the good work.
Thank you very much. The female passenger was my wife. Indeed she was nervous ;) Cheers Matt
Wunderbar das ist der Deutsche ju-52
Legend. One of 'em.
Yes, it was definitely great to fly with this legendary and good old JU 52.
Very impressive and well put together video, Big time enjoyed watching and going on the ride with you :) like Steve Bland said I also am a DC-3 Junkie but love these very historic aircraft as well.
Thank you for the compliments!
A plane that the pilots actually fly---not something with computers to do so.
Great plane!
2:22 why is there a BMW badge there, was it made by BMW?
Thanks for asking. These are BMW aircraft engines!
The 3 Swiss Junkers Ju 52/3m was in 1939 Delivered only with BMW 132 A Engines.
The iconic paratrooper's plane. I wish I could ride one of these in Fallschirmjäger style.
Thanks for watching!
Einfach nur ein geiles Flugzeug 👍
Vielen Dank!
Fabulous Sounding Plane 🇨🇭❤️🇬🇧Lush Alpine Scenery ❤️
An amazing airplane, and an awesome video! Liked!!
+99carnot Thank you very much!
Glad to see BMW still carry service parts for thier legacy products- one old mechanic here..
Great video mate!
+bristolcardifairport Thank you!
Whenever I see this aircraft, I hear the theme from "Where Eagles Dare." Magnificent machine. Thank you for the wonderful video.
It looks like it has doors on both sides of the fuselage. Is this right? How do they open? Do they slide or open outward? Somewhere I saw a schematic that showed a side door that split in two, with the bottom half acting as a kind of ramp.
look at that wingspan. nice chug from the engines too
Wow cool air plane
Wow
WOW!! I didn't know any of these were still flying. How awesome. This looks and sounds like the transport plane they used in the 1968 film "Where Eagles Dare"
The flight was awesome. I have never seen this movie. But I think they used Junkers Ju 52.
You haven't missed anything by not seeing the movie but yes, they did.
Mark Muffs this was a former Swiss Air Force plane. The 52 that was in Where Eagles Dare (excellent movie!) was also a Swiss AF plane in Luftwaffe paint. Since there are only 8 surviving planes worldwide, this most likely is the plane used in the movie.
Mark Muffs &&
Yeah, you don't see any de Havilland Comets or Aerospatiale Caravelles flying but these planes are still flying despite they're much older.
The prop stop at the end was good.
Thank you
Can any of You Aviation mechanics or pilots tell me, why the JU52 didn't have a 3 blade prop ? Very nice Aircraft! I love the radial sound
Great footage. Thanks for sharing.
Spectacular
Thank you Darrel.
