Question: How has the stability of this version been? Haven’t heard much about any bugs. Also do you know if any of the side chain features have been improved for plugin’s like iZotope Neutron and Nector? On 18 it doesn’t have the option to select a side chain track like Logic Pro or other DAW’s.

There were a few mistakes in this video that a human wouldn’t have made. Unless blackmagic released added a new banking app for managing CA$H?
It's just incredible how they manage to both add new features that are pretty much always something that is super useful and also make it a tad bit faster and better optimized. Every day we stray further from Adobe, which is a good thing obviously.
Now that we have version 18.5, would you consider making a tutorial on how to use those new functions using a speed editor? I love your way of guiding us into this marvellous software! 🤩
Alex, loved the "Create subtitles from audio" feature. I had some very long medical videos sent to me and the program interpreted the medical words the best it could. Would love to see a spell check in subtitles and a find and replace. Yea, we always want more! UPDATE. audio transcription > select search > find and replace. Does the job and updates the subtitles.
"Select all clips under playhead" is very useful. I have given it "V" as a shortcut. Also the multi-clip stabilization is probably worth a short video of its own. You can set parameters without pressing the stabliize button. Also it can cope with different parameters in different clips. So I can set cropping ratio to .9 for some clips and .7 to other clips and when I do press stabilize it does the right thing for each clip. The exception is the mode list which seems to have to be a single choice for all - however this is useful too as you can select a whole bunch of clips, choose a mode which is not the default, and it remembers subsequently - all without actually pressing the stabilize button.
Ahhh this is very helpful indeed! If I understand correctly though ; you can’t set some clips to similarity and others to perspective, it’ll only render one type for all?
The biggest one in fusion to me is the multi merger node. As soon as you said that, I was blown. Now there are so much more I can do to simplify my life now. Awesome sauce!!
I'm glad they made the export still thing a lot easier, but it would be even better if they just had a single button to click to do that, or maybe even a keyboard shortcut. Maybe that will come soon.
@@PatrickStirling I don't think that is what he is saying. He is talking about having a deafult export location, setting and everything and it will start rendering and exporting as soon as you hit the shortcut. currently there is no such thing
The transcript function needs timestamp codes along side each sentence. Why? Well, in Premiere Pro they have timestamps along with the transcript that I put into Chat GPT to analyze. From there I can use AI to find certain things within the transcript based on mood, similar topics, etc. and ask specifically where at in the transcript I can find it and it takes me directly there! I've been able to save hours of time scrubbing through hours of footage. I'm working at neck breaking speeds now. Maybe Davinci or Premiere Pro will add this AI feature right inside the application.
Small tip for yall regarding the automatic subtitle , learn to use 2 time lines in the same time and then you can drag the video you want to subtitle to the other timeline > auto subtitle , that way you can subtitle only 1 video insted of the whole clip
I didn't mention it in this video BUT you can actually just mark In and Outs on your timeline with the I and O keys. Mark in and outs, then do the Create Subtitles and it'll only create them for the marked area on your timeline :)
Ooh, first time using 18.5 subtitles on a video I'm currently editing that had dodgy audio which Voice Isolation couldn't fix. Only had to correct one or two words, but it's super-intuitive; didn't even need to watch your full video 😆, but I thank you all the same!
Nice round-up of new features. The subtitles function looks like it frequently splits the lines in the completely wrong place, usually ending a sentence and including the first word or two of the next one on a line, so a lot of editing would be required to make them not look amateurishly auto-generated. Still better than youTube automated subtitles, I guess.
Auto subtitles are not bad, and i'm really happy about the new languages. First error i spotted was it transcribing cache as cash, but that's hard to differentiate. In any way this feature alone will be a massive time saver
The export still is great, saves a few clicks and seconds. But what I'm really missing is playing two video lines next to each other. The whole multicam timeline save is a pain in the butt, and with 360 footage you are stuck with an angle, so you then have to re-add the original 360 footage back to the timeline and replace the multicam clip with the 360 clip. All we need is to play video 1 and video 2 next to each other while editing or cutting. It could be so easy
Honestly at this point, if you are 'invested' in editing i.e. you really enjoy it, are spending alot of time on it or making money from it. I think it's a good time to think about jumping to Studio. Studio offers the most value its ever offered! (a few years back, it was actually a hard sell as the Free version was literally 95% as good, but that gap is now growing)

Can you please answer some of the comments about installation? I see I'm not the only one that's having problems getting 18.5 to load up and install. Do we delete the old one? Will it install over the old one? Is there some step some of us aren't following? I think it's important to either A. Tell everyone what were not doing correctly, or B. Thank you for this auto subtitles. Oddly for me when adding subtitles on my video after 22 minutes in on my 32 minute video Davinci Resolve simply gave up generating anymore subtitles
Is... is it me or the program is MUCH more stable!? It's not like my computer can't use the program but the effects always take a moment to load... and now it's working like butter I cannot be the only one who applied some transitions/effects and saw a HUGE improvement
all is great but if you cannot use realtime playback, whats the point ? Try multiple videos speed up 6000%. Davinci will try to play them at 2400 FPS instead of 60 and you wont be able to preview timeline anymore. Why does it do that ? Do i need to speed up video using another program and then import it ? This is NUTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting about the remote monitoring is that the clients are getting seemingly a feed with a rec709 transformation added to it. So if you have an output color transform node in your color node-tree to rec709 that will double it and look super contrasty and saturated. I have not find anything in the manual that would address that. But nevertheless, it's a revolutionary feature to have.
These all sound incredible! It's insane they somehow managed to make magic masks better & I'm going to get sooo much mileage out of smart keyframes (probably going to remap those shortcuts though for one-handed use)

Now, the biggest question is... any improvement in comparison to the BETA? Hopefully captions are better, I always find myself spending a lot of time fixing the captions from Davinci in comparison to Premiere where almost always was great!
I honestly haven't had chance to compare yet. Literally got access today and just got straight to the video. But I didn't even look at the subtitles for this video before uploading so made no amendments at all. That should give you a rough idea!
Only downloaded 18.5 beta 2 days ago as I was having problems with 18.1.4009 - and couldn't uninstall it! Unfortunately 18.5 didn't "resolve" the problem - and I have no idea what's going on with it - but I will for sure be updating to the final version!
What workflows would you do in the cut page vs the edit page? I'm coming from premiere and really unsure about how to utilize the cut page, especially because in the official videos from BMD, they go straight from media to edit page.
Personally, I do most of work on edit as well. Cut page is useful especially on smaller screens (like a laptop) or if you've just got a simple edit to do. But honestly, use what you like and what works for you!
Running Apple Store version of Studio which is always lagging behind a bit when it come to updates. Anyways.. just wanted to say that the Depth Map filter is/was available in Fusion before 18.5. Comparing the UI in you video to the one on my 18.1.4 release the only difference seems to be that 18.5 has changed the name of "Quality" to "Mode" and instead of using a dropdown for those settings (Faster/Better) it's using two buttons. Which, in my book, however small, still counts as an upgrade! Looking forward to update:)

I started using After Effects back and Adobe Premiere with CS4, 5, and 6 for special effects. I need to redesign my my intro in Fusion and have not found a lot of luck. I would post a link here but do not want to tread on your channel per say. I have my assets just need help on the approach of the design, I have my assets. I hope you have a video in the future that shows how to the burn in technique. Watched one but it was not exactly what I was looking for. Keep up the good work and I will watch when posted.

Sounds like a lot of great stuff. Bit disappointed that the auto captioning and transcription tools are locked behind the paywall, but hey, what can you do...
They've got to make money somewhere on Resolve. Historically anything that uses their Ai engine is in Studio only. Plus, most other software uses a web service to do the translation but Resolve does it all locally which is more secure and means you can do it anywhere.
The transcription tool can’t deal with German yet? I tried this on my video and it gave me some gibberish of English, Chinese and some undecipherable characters…or is there a setting i am missing?
They’re making the Studio upgrade hard to ignore 😩 It seems like an incredible value (especially considering it’s not a subscription) but I sure do wish their speed editor stayed at $300 (+free Studio). Do you think getting the speed editor at $400 + free Studio is the way to go if I’m serious about editing? I’m just all about my keyboard shortcuts already, so I don’t know if it has much benefit beyond that?
Yeaaaaah it is hard to ignore these days! I don't use my speed editor often tbh but it is nice, I know people who really love it. Plus you could always sell the speed editor if you don't use it which could claw back some more money.
I tried to use the speed editor for months (at the same time I starated using DaVinci) in the Edit page, but lately I just gave it up and using a good keyboard with shortcuts seem to save a lot more time (again if you use the CUT page it may be different)

Oh nice! Finally! Woo Most excited for the NR speed up on Apple Silicone... Just finished rendering a 4k 8 min video with NR (took almost 2 hours) Hope it's a great speed increase. I shoot VLog and almost always need NR 😅
@@MrAlexTech I just exported another project about the same time and amount of NR + bit of sharpening. It took 1.5 hours.. I guess it sped up a bit. For reference: Lumix S5, 4K 24fps, VLog M1 Mac Mini 16GB RAM (yes this could use an update 😂 -- still a beast though) Davinci Resolve 18.5!

Hi, Resolve 18.5 user, while I have not yet subscribed, (due to laziness on my part.) I have been following your Resolve videos for the past few months, I've been using Resolve since the latter days of 17. Your videos have been most helpful. One thing I would like to ask is, have you noticed any problems with the audio tracks in regard to synchronization. Over the past couple of months, I have been transferring VHS home movies to digital using OBS Studio (saving as MP4 at 30fps) and editing in Resolve 18.5. Occasionally I have found a 1 to 2 sec audio sync issue on 3 or 4 recordings when in Resolve. Playing back those files using VLC on my work PC, my laptop and a second PC, along with playing in Vegas Movie Studio on both PC's, do not show any sync issues. I am puzzled. Keep up the good work.

Why not simply take a screenshot?

It comes with a Speed Editor, cameras, panels, etc. Speed Editor was a game changer for me, micro color panel next.
Honestly doesnt matter how you look at it , its worth buying davinci resolve studio beacuse its a 1 time payment for life and you support them

Exporting stills is amazing because I always finish my thumbnails in resolve and I'm tired of screen shotting it

I honestly haven't had chance to compare yet. Literally got access today and just got straight to the video.
But I didn't even look at the subtitles for this video before uploading so made no amendments at all. That should give you a rough idea!
Only downloaded 18.5 beta 2 days ago as I was having problems with 18.1.4009 - and couldn't uninstall it!
Unfortunately 18.5 didn't "resolve" the problem - and I have no idea what's going on with it - but I will for sure be updating to the final version!

Can I export a .PNG sequence from Deliver instead of Fusion now?
Can you zoom out on the cut page yet? can you convert transcription to captions yet? can you delete keyframe with the keyboard shortcut yet?
What workflows would you do in the cut page vs the edit page? I'm coming from premiere and really unsure about how to utilize the cut page, especially because in the official videos from BMD, they go straight from media to edit page.
Personally, I do most of work on edit as well. Cut page is useful especially on smaller screens (like a laptop) or if you've just got a simple edit to do. But honestly, use what you like and what works for you!

Running Apple Store version of Studio which is always lagging behind a bit when it come to updates. Anyways.. just wanted to say that the Depth Map filter is/was available in Fusion before 18.5. Comparing the UI in you video to the one on my 18.1.4 release the only difference seems to be that 18.5 has changed the name of "Quality" to "Mode" and instead of using a dropdown for those settings (Faster/Better) it's using two buttons. Which, in my book, however small, still counts as an upgrade! Looking forward to update:)
Lagging a bit with updates? :) I have Apple Store version, too..And I was going to use some curse / dirty words...But fortunately I checked Apple Store one more time before posting this comment...and YEEE 18.5 is now available! Alex is great. Instructions are clear, tips are useful and videos motivating...and also have time to understand and follow the instructions. Thanks Alex!

We have auto subtitles, auto transcription, now can we please have auto translation of subtitles and transcripts?
magic masks track very well. is there any way to then use that tracking to do stabilization in fusion?

Thank you dude, Senpai Gaming suggested you. I have worked with friends in the film and gaming industry that used BlackMagic products since the early 2000's. I started using After Effects back and Adobe Premiere with CS4, 5, and 6 for special effects. I need to redesign my my intro in Fusion and have not found a lot of luck. I would post a link here but do not want to tread on your channel per say. I have my assets just need help on the approach of the design, I have my assets. I hope you have a video in the future that shows how to the burn in technique. Watched one but it was not exactly what I was looking for. Keep up the good work and I will watch when posted.

Sounds like a lot of great stuff. Bit disappointed that the auto captioning and transcription tools are locked behind the paywall, but hey, what can you do...
They've got to make money somewhere on Resolve. Historically anything that uses their Ai engine is in Studio only. Plus, most other software uses a web service to do the translation but Resolve does it all locally which is more secure and means you can do it anywhere.
The transcription tool can’t deal with German yet? I tried this on my video and it gave me some gibberish of English, Chinese and some undecipherable characters…or is there a setting i am missing?
Finally able to stabilize multiple clips at once, awesome!

It seems like an incredible value (especially considering it’s not a subscription) but I sure do wish their speed editor stayed at $300 (+free Studio).
Do you think getting the speed editor at $400 + free Studio is the way to go if I’m serious about editing? I’m just all about my keyboard shortcuts already, so I don’t know if it has much benefit beyond that?
Yeaaaaah it is hard to ignore these days! I don't use my speed editor often tbh but it is nice, I know people who really love it. Plus you could always sell the speed editor if you don't use it which could claw back some more money.
I tried to use the speed editor for months (at the same time I starated using DaVinci) in the Edit page, but lately I just gave it up and using a good keyboard with shortcuts seem to save a lot more time (again if you use the CUT page it may be different)

Most excited for the NR speed up on Apple Silicone... Just finished rendering a 4k 8 min video with NR (took almost 2 hours) Hope it's a great speed increase. I shoot VLog and almost always need NR 😅
I must admit I didn't test to confirm it but yeaaah I hope it really is 2x quicker for when I'm on the MacBook 😄
@@MrAlexTech I just exported another project about the same time and amount of NR + bit of sharpening.
It took 1.5 hours.. I guess it sped up a bit.

I would really love to be able to copy and paste a group of keyframe from one clip to another.
I believe you can! Open up the curve, highlight the keyframes and then ctrl c. Repeat on the other clip with ctrl v to paste
And still they don't integrate the trackpad pinch to zoom feature for MacOS.
This drives me crazy.

(by now if you use retime function you can only export in one unique video)
Is there a threshold for the auto-sub feature? Like, is there a specific dB value that Resolve uses in the automated transcription feature?
I have been working with last weeks beta version. Unless they made a lot of changes, I don't think it's ready for prime time.
I've been using it since release and it's been pretty stable for me. Few hiccups here and there but nothing too major

Hi, Resolve 18.5 user, while I have not yet subscribed, (due to laziness on my part.) I have been following your Resolve videos for the past few months, I've been using Resolve since the latter days of 17. Your videos have been most helpful.
One thing I would like to ask is, have you noticed any problems with the audio tracks in regard to synchronization.
Over the past couple of months, I have been transferring VHS home movies to digital using OBS Studio (saving as MP4 at 30fps) and editing in Resolve 18.5.
Occasionally I have found a 1 to 2 sec audio sync issue on 3 or 4 recordings when in Resolve. Playing back those files using VLC on my work PC, my laptop and a second PC, along with playing in Vegas Movie Studio on both PC's, do not show any sync issues.
I am puzzled.
