I'd like to add that she did take sedatives that are used before surgery, so there might be the slight possibility that she did just sit there and let it happen
Yeah my thought too. and back in the day they used to associate alcoholism with spontaneous combustion (read Bleak House for an example haha). So often two factors that seem to be associated with "spontaneous combustion" are drinking and smoking. Light yourself on fire because of the smoking while too drunk or sedated to be responsible, and then don't react because you're passed-out drunk or drugged. Wick effect is a bit more complicated than described in this ep also, and even explains the fat in the rug and the fact that feet are often left behind.
My mom used to take barbiturates (the same class of sedatives she took in this case) and if she took too many she would nod off and fall asleep sometimes with a cigarette in her hand but I would watch her all the time and put it out if she dropped it. So this theory is extremely plausible to me. She said she took 4 total.
Ball lightning has been observed to be real relatively recently and the devastating effects while not observed have been reported. Weird phenomenon but not at all that weird.
I’m with Shane on the spontaneous doesn’t equal instantaneous thing. After (unfortunately) having taken organic chemistry, I know that reactions happening spontaneously can happen spontaneously but over a VERY long time. Spontaneous just means it is “favorable” or doesn’t really need any extra energy or push for it to happen.
There is actually a kind of lightning that is in the form of a ball. I heard it happen to an aunt of mine. supposedly very dangerous. Don't know if that's true in this case tho.
"A ball of fire came through the open window and hit her. I seen it happen." Ball of Fire: "I did not hit her, it's not true! It's bulls**t! I did not hit her! I did NOT... Oh, hi Mark!"
This occurred to a retired fireman in his bed. His skull also shrunk and the source was unknown and many details are similar. Body fat seems to play a part in the intenses burning.
IT would be a good fuel source since fat takes much longer to melt and oils can easily severely burn other substances. If you spit into a boiling pot of oil it explodes and ignites
Ryan: you can combust in flames from stress, obesity etc Me: *realizes my stomach rolls and crippling anxiety* haha im in danger (2024) I made this comment when I was about 16 years old. stomach rolls dont indicate obesity lol are you over 180 pounds? everybody has stomach rolls its called skin. if we didnt, our stomachs would tear in half when we moved
The idea of a human bursting into flames is preposterous. Yes, fat is combustible, but only at high temperatures and in oxygen rich environments ie. not fat deposits. And methane? you can't light your own farts on fire let alone burst into flames because of methane.
Okay no lie, I actually am surprised they discounted the “ball of fire” theory because of the existence of ball lightning. Obviously we’d need a lot more information such as the weather, the charge in the room, etc but given that ball lightning is basically a ball of roaming plasma looking to discharge, and little is known about the damage it can cause to someone if struck by it, I think it’s a theory that at the very least can’t be ruled out.
I was coming to the comments to say this exact thing! They were like “nothing in the room was touched and a guy said he saw a fireball” I was like oh it’s ball lightning then😅
I searched ball lightning up, it says on Wiki that it leaves an odor of Sulphur. However, in this particular case, there was no detection of any smell or odour from the room where she was burnt. So, in the end this theory might not be the case.

"when does something spontaneous happen slowly" a lot of spontaneous chemical reactions occur slowly. Rusting, for example. Spontaneous just means that it happens without outside input
All of you forget your chemistry from high school. A spontaneous chemical reaction is one that happens simply when the required substances are present without any heating or other interaction from another form of energy like light. When you put oxygen next to iron, it will rust. The rate of reaction is independent of the spontaneity of the reaction. Rusting happens slowly, but you don't need to heat your car for it to rust, it just happens on its own. I'll spare the calculations, but for iron not to rust, it actually needs to be at thousands of degrees C, which makes it less useful as it melts.
I've never ever been excited to see a video in my feed until Buzzfeed Unsolved came along. It's clears my skin, calms my anxiety and feels like the equivalent of eating some damn good lasagna.
I believe that the perfect representation of this show is the last part where Ryan closes his case file that contains INTENSE research and then there’s Shane with his little flip book of the woman exploding.
Just a random theory, but there could be a totally plausible explanation for the way poor Ms. Reeser died- while modern furniture had safety requirements, any older chairs/couches in those days often used an incredibly dangerous type of foam (see the 'Woolworth's fire' of 1979 for further example) that wasn't just flammable, but also released toxic fumes as it burned. Perhaps only part of her chair used these materials, or maybe the lab didn't want to acknowledge the culpable source- who knows? But it's possible that she took the pills, and a fire started somehow (whether due to her cigarette, or something else) and she was incapable of responding to it in her incapacitated state. Given her age, it's possible that she was pre- or already an (undiagnosed) diabetic and her one foot had limited blood flow or some other medical restriction leading to that limb not being as easily burned. Tragic, but hopefully she wasn't conscious for any of this...
Ryan - Your voice is perfect and haunting for what you are doing, describing these chilling unsolved mysteries and unfolding them for us. Shane- I would not be able to watch these videos of unsolved crimes without your wit and humor bringing it back to reality so quickly. I am such a scaredy cat. Thank you both for this extremely entertaining series
Senali Karunathilake Maybe, but there are plenty of alcoholics and people who smoke two packs a day that don't spontaneously combust. Not saying it's completely impossible, just really rare.
You should go to the Villisca Axe Murder House in Iowa. The murderer was never caught and the case remains unsolved over 100 years later! It's also rumored to be haunted by multiple paranormal spirits. Who else thinks that would be cool? Like so they can see!!!
Two of my good friends went there. They got a video of them throwing a ball down the stairs and it coming back at them, and one of the pictures on the wall moved like 2 inches to the right randomly!
good case man, ghost lab already did the show and found that there is something in there, the divices point out how did the murder occured , and a voice "for fun". that one still unsolve, but i bet since ryan afraid of ghost, so, that show would take long enough ( for his "God damn holy water!")
I was just watching something about post-war chairs and clothing that were made of a certain material and caught fire very quickly. They actually mentioned someone who fell asleep with a cigarette and ended up catching themselves and their entire couch on fire. Also, a woman was making tea standing next to her stove, and her nightdress caught fire burning her alive. I instantly thought of this case.
bryan villafana buzzfeed has the rights to unsolved and without buzzfeed Ryan and Shane wouldn't be able to sleep in all of the supernatural places that they have slept in
This is 2 years late but oh well. (All of the below is rough research.) I was particularly interested in the shrunken skull part of the mystery and I found out that shrunken heads (tsantsa) made by Jivaroan tribes have skulls that are approximately 1/3 of their original size. The process in making these shrunken heads involve boiling the heads for a certain amount of time. The human brain is about 73% water and a minimum of 60% fat, which meant that it had a plausible means to 'boil' the skull over time instead of incinerating it immediately like the other parts of the body. My brief research indicated that shrunken heads were boiled for approx 1-2 hours, while it could take 2 - 3 hours to completely burn a human body. The foot was also interesting, in theory, if the victim died due to spontaneous human combustion and was diagnosed with diabetes, it may be possible for a foot to be left unburned. Individuals with diabetes may have swollen, fluid-filled feet which aided in preventing it from catching on fire. If a different part of the body remained, that could also be explained as it being too far from the point of ignition and/or was shielded by other organs or tissues containing high percentages of water particularly if the ignition is due to a very small source like static electricity or an inhaled ember from a cigarette. In the case of Mary Reese, parts of her spine remained intact, spinal fluid is 99% water (100-150mL is present within the human body at any time). Just an interesting tidbit: Methane is highly combustible and burns at temperatures above 1900 deg.celsius but it can be easily contained by water. I once did an experiment in chemistry where methane was run through a mixture of water and dish soap (iirc) producing methane bubbles. The teacher then had us soak our hands in water, scoop some of the bubbles and then they lit the bubbles on fire using a candle. Water evaporated but our skin was perfectly fine.
This may be dumb but they completely forgot ab the meds she took idk if it had any role it in but she said she would take two more before bed and idk if it had anything to do with the combustion where they talked ab the gases and such inside a body
The fact that one of the reasons to "why the body would ignite so easily" is stress, is stressing me out. Like I could legit be set on fire just like that. And I mean, school/college students have a LOT of stress. 😕
thatuniqueweirdgurrl her profile pic is a "demon protection" symbol from the tv show, if I do say my self it's a great show. Another funny thing in supernatural there is quite a bit of spontaneous human combustion
Some tribes would make things called "Shrunked heads" They did this with scolding hot sand and you can still see the heads in some museums! (I've seen them, they're pretty cool!)
I remember when i was about 7 or so I read a “true ghost stories” book where a little girl just spontaneously combusted (or maybe it was her head that caught on fire??) without any warning besides smelling fire and from then until i was about 9 or 10 I would panic every time I smelled fire thinking that i was about to combust.
"her legs were the size of little tiny teaspoons" bahaha!! I LOVE THESE GUYS!! I just can't get enough of this pair, and u just discovered them!! They compliment each other so well! Not only is it interesting to hear about the history, but every 1 of their videos makes me laugh at some point!!! I'm totally binge watching!
some cushions are filled with all sorts of recycled refuse and trash. My guess is that there was something particularly flammable in the recliner that caused the extremely hot and controlled fire, ignited by the dropped cigarette.
I did my research and maybe there is a reason for the tiny human skull. The decrease of vitamin D can cause the bones to shrink, and there were many reasons for her vitamin D levels to decrease. •Skin temperature. High levels of heat can cause it to decrease. •Old age. •Over weight. (Interestingly there isn't Mary's height anywhere on the internet so I'll assume she was an average old lady 5'2) the average weight for a 5'6 woman is 140, she was 5'2 and weighed 170. •Antiseizure drugs. The seconal pills she was taking were also anticonvulsant. •Kidney and liver damage, that could've been caused by the spontaneous combustion. That's all I could find out.
I wonder if her unburnt surroundings had anything to do with the fact that asbestos (known for being inflammable) was a really popular component in insulation and even plaster at the time?

Olivia Martin how does this shit calm u lmfao
Olivia Martin BUZZFEED UNSOLVED IS A DAMN GOOD LASAGNA

I believe that the perfect representation of this show is the last part where Ryan closes his case file that contains INTENSE research and then there’s Shane with his little flip book of the woman exploding.
They need to make this a Netflix series
YES
eyzek soo it’s on hulu
Then it won’t be free though...
It’s on prime video
YES DUDE THEY SHOULD

Normal people: her case was reported in Florida
Ryan: she happened in florida
when your teacher says not to copy from the text:
Just for the record, I am a cremation expert and average bodies only need to burn at about 1700゚for 2.5 hours. That other guy is trippin
He just wanted the bodies to be extra ashy
@Anonymous not necessarily, crematory operators do have to be licensed in some states. I'm an expert in most things death and dying, as a whole.
I going to assume you think she just dropped a cig on herself and burned? Because spontaneous human combustion sounds ludicrous
why are your zeros different sizes
do you think she just accidentally fell asleep and dropped the cig on herself?

Shane- I would not be able to watch these videos of unsolved crimes without your wit and humor bringing it back to reality so quickly. I am such a scaredy cat. Thank you both for this extremely entertaining series

Senali Karunathilake Maybe, but there are plenty of alcoholics and people who smoke two packs a day that don't spontaneously combust. Not saying it's completely impossible, just really rare.

I am your 911th like. I IS THE POLICE
You should go to the Villisca Axe Murder House in Iowa. The murderer was never caught and the case remains unsolved over 100 years later! It's also rumored to be haunted by multiple paranormal spirits. Who else thinks that would be cool? Like so they can see!!!
OMG I WENT THERE ONCE!!!! And when I got home later that night I found scratch marks on my back that I didn't have before. THEY NEEDA GO!!

Wow I'm seeing my own comment that I completely forgot I even left, and now I don't even know why I quoted it but I'm glad I got almost 600 likes 🤣
Why don't these guys just start their own paranormal channel
bryan villafana buzzfeed owns their souls.
Julia Cornell "next on unsolved we cover if buzzfeed really owns our souls"
bryan villafana buzzfeed has the rights to unsolved and without buzzfeed Ryan and Shane wouldn't be able to sleep in all of the supernatural places that they have slept in
right this is the only reason im subbed to this shitty channel
yeah, I agree XD
Isabel C Stanley This research is really interesting thanks!
This is interesting!
That's one cool teacher
Damn Einstein
Your research is so good omg
This may be dumb but they completely forgot ab the meds she took idk if it had any role it in but she said she would take two more before bed and idk if it had anything to do with the combustion where they talked ab the gases and such inside a body
i was so terrified of exploding before the end of the video.

The fact that one of the reasons to "why the body would ignite so easily" is stress, is stressing me out. Like I could legit be set on fire just like that. And I mean, school/college students have a LOT of stress. 😕
Cookies&Cats im scared now
Cookies&Cats what does your profile pic mean?
thatuniqueweirdgurrl her profile pic is a "demon protection" symbol from the tv show, if I do say my self it's a great show. Another funny thing in supernatural there is quite a bit of spontaneous human combustion
Sasha Underdown 😂😂 true I love supernatural
Yeah and that involves aches and pain. I'm an aict student and i have to sit in front of the laptop a lot which gives me MAJOR pain. :(
I read “combustion” and “reeser” at the same time and I genuinely thought her name was Mary cheeseburger .-.

He said so seriously- "This proves that the first case... is ridiculous."
"her legs were the size of little tiny teaspoons"
bahaha!!

Its a good theory.
@@magicrabbit9446 yeah
Thanks for doing researchhh
This is a myth-the skull had not shrink-what they report called a skull was in fact the hip joint.
Oh your Seahawks hurt my brain
