👏👏👏👏👏 This film is sheer PERFECTION. The story, the script, the casting, the flawless performances, the directing, the editing, the costuming... full marks in every category!! Attenborough... a master of his craft!
Stacy Keach, playing a British character, holds his own in a cast full of excellent British actors (and, Canadian, in the case of Plummer). Outstanding cast!
Thank you for posting this hidden gem. It starts slow. But an hour in it becomes an intense military courtroom drama as good as "A Few Good Men" or "Men of Honor" And a whodunit as well. For a free TH-cam movie, it is damn good!
Excellent movie: plot, cast and the eternal themes of honour, virtue, duty, truth & friendship. Superb story. I miss Michael York and Stacey Keach is mesmerizing in this role. Why can't they make movies like this anymore?
Astonishimg plot! Excellent movie! Superbe actors! York and Plummer are my two favourite English actors. Thank you, CCC! Enjoyed this film very much! Great entertainment!
You right -- Michael York was just such a unique actor in the Seventies. Will never forget his perfect D'Artagnan under the witty direction of Richard Lester. Have been missing him a lot since he cought that rare and terrible illness.
Good cast. One might think that the plot might be predictable, but there are interesting twists. Surprisingly low-key, but intense, psychological drama.
Once you get a third of the way in this becomes an amazing movie. Amazing plot with twists. Stacy Keach is phenomenal and should get higher billing. York as the young defender seeking truth and honor in the face of much pressure to give way to a quick trial is an amazing theme, one which is also used twenty years later in "A Few Good Men." I like this execution even better.
The film is an incredible legal mystery set in British India in 1879, the acting is superb and the portrayal of military etiquette and dialogue is incredibly realistic, highly recommended for anyone who enjoys compelling dramatic fiction with historical accuracy.
What a dramatic and crystal clear statement was put forth !! The misleading and pompous behavior of a group of people who want to belong to a manipulative and self deceiving group!! Excellent film!!
I saw this at a city cinema in Sydney in late '75 just before my 17th birthday and was amazed that Stacy Keach did such a good, natural-sounding English accent in this film.
I am of English extraction and used to spend many hours talking with my Grandfather before he died. My Grandfather had served in both WWI and WWII in the British army and the Canadian army respectively. Watching this movie reminded me of what he had to say about the British officers he had served under during WWI. To say he had great distain for them would be a massive understatement. He despised them in every way. It was all about King and Country for them and they had no use for the troops themselves. They expected blind loyalty and would accept no less, even when it came to murdering prisoners who had surrendered. On more than one occasion the word came down the line "There will be no prisoners today." My Grandfather had been up on charges once for disobeying a direct order and served 30 days in the stockade on bread and water. I asked him what had happened and he told me this. He had cornered two young German soldiers in a trench and they chose to give up the fight. He took their weapons and had them sitting down awaiting to be taken away when his Lieutenant arrived on the scene. He surveyed the situation and asked my Grandfather if he knew what his orders were. My Grandfather told him yes, he knew the orders and the Lieutenant responded, "Well get on with it then." My Grandfather refused and the Lieutenant turned his pistol on him and once again gave him the order to dispatch the prisoners and again he refused. Without another word the Lieutenant then turned his gun on the prisoners and shot and killed both of them. He then told my Grandfather to get moving and rejoin the fight. When the battle was over the Lieutenant had him summoned to headquarters and they conducted a mock trial with the Colonel and two other officers acting as the court. He plead guilty because he knew that they would convict him regardless of what had occurred and he was convicted and the Provost took him away to the stockade. I asked why he plead guilty and he told me he had two choices. Plead guilty and go to the stockade or plead not guilty and possibly end up in front of a firing squad when they changed the charges and added cowardice. It was also known among the troops that on occasion some men who had refused an order were found on the battlefield after the next action shot in the back. The situation for them was simple. Comply or die. My Grandfather went silent after he told me this and we never spoke of it again. I was 14 at the time and my Grandfather was 71, the same age I am today. But even today I remember the look on his face after he had told me these things and how they had haunted him all his life. He died the following year.
Real english brand of classic english movies !
This deep, psychological drama is not just very entertaining, but It makes you to think.Very powerful story! The military trial brilliantly staged, played by all superb actors, is the gripping culmination with the unexpected revelations on the both sides and twists. Where the main question was: Can the officers handle the Truth? Watch this amassing movie and you will find out.
Cult Cinema Classics, Thank you for sharing this fine small budget movie, it amounts to a filmed play what with it's few sets but is so artfully done few will notice. It also again proves that in any mystery or police drama, whomever is the best known/most honored actor in the supporting cast is the "bad guy" the star is trying to unmask. That's because the bad guy is the juiciest part, and the biggest supporting actor will want that part.
Absolutely excellent film, and I understand why we are unfamiliar with it. It could not have been shown on television in any way. I’m surprised that it made it into a theater?!? It deserves a revival.
I found this video to be entertaining and interesting from the very start, full of unexpected twists and turns I could not have imagined. I also found the Indian widow to be beautiful!!
I enjoyed this movie immensely, such great actors together in such a movie cant get better than that. Was this movie based on actual fact, it showed just before the credits the officer that Richard Attenborough portrayed in the movie
Random fact? The film has direct connections to both Star Trek and Star Wars - Persis Khambatta (Mrs. Bandanai) played Lt. Ilia in the first Star Trek film and Michael Culver (Lt. Fothergill) played Capt. Needa in The Empire Strikes Back.
This is a chef's kiss movie. Recently, i cannot finish a movie because I get bored after 5 or 10 mins. I watched this movie without a pause (except for the water and bathroom break).
Will somebody please explain the ending? (spoiler alert) Did a ghost take possession of the officer and make him do horrible things? Was he really Scarlett in disguise, who'd assumed another identity? But if so, why? And how was he able to fool everyone in his regiment into thinking he was somebody else? I just...don't get this. It was a great movie, up until the end, but after that it made no sense to me.
Couldn’t make out certain things. Was Drake really killed? Were Drake and Roche the same persons. Why was the regiment keeping it a secret? What is all this honour business, when they treat women like pigs. Their honour rooted in their dishonour stood.
Spoiler alert . . It seems that the man who killed himself *imagined* he had been possessed by a dead man, but he recognised - when confronted - that he'd been the person responsible for the assaults. As someone else commented, it may have been trauma ....
What a pleasure to watch. Great acting, great screenwriting and makes one recall when actors were actors and not just fill ins reading idiot sheets in between computer generated cartoons. And what a relief that cast for the British members of the regiment were not colour coded by skin colour or gender.
A finer grouping of British actors.actresses would be nigh impossible to find. I'd like to also mention two very fine Indian actors: Rafiq Anwar was spot on as Pradah Singh, so much so it didn't seem as acting. Persis Khambatta a rising star who left her fans too early in life.
@@Monty_BeGoodToEachOther Plummer a proud Canuck, Keach is American and was terrific in the Hemingway mini-series and as star of "Mike Hammer". He also had very good wigs, like Steve Martin, Tony Randall and the cast of Bonanza except for Michael Landon.

Excellent film and stellar cast! Thank you for posting this classic! ❤️

British always made good movie and tv shows back in the days 60s 70s and 80s early 90s now it sucks

Remarkable cast, presenting an excellent screen play, for a movie I've never heard of.
The greatest dishonor is to oneself. Great storyline. Great acting. Thanks for posting.
Thank you. Glad you found the movie interesting too.
Fantastic movie. All about honour, loyalty, friendship and respect…….the honour of the regiment MUST be protected at ALL cost!

Well done. Good story, good acting, and a fine set.
Talk about extremely skillfully written. Cannot have required any budget to speak of even back then. Extremely impressive.
The silliness at the beginning third has a purpose of contrasting the following two thirds of what is an extraordinarily good movie.
