I have loved Holmes and Watson since I discovered the stories by Conan Doyle years ago. Read them countless times to my daughter. I appreciate these films so much replay value like many older black and whites. Great interiors clean well groomed actors and excellent acting. So much new material has zero replay value. These are classic gems. Thank you.
I can totally immerse myself in the Rathbone/Sherlock films, they are a wonderful escape from the harsh realities of the 21st C.. I love the simplicity of this fictional world even the murders are quite gentlemanly if that's at all possible. Basil is truly the epitimy of Holmes.
Watson by the one and only Bruce. A sickening parody, portraying Dr. Watson as a MoronicBrainDamagedAsshole. This series is literally the only adaptation to show Watson as a complete and utter imbecile. It's pathetic.

This is the third or fourth time over many years that I have viewed "Terror by Night." The plot, pacing, and acting by the primary and supporting cast is of high quality entertainment. This viewing was enhanced by the high quality visual and auditory clarity of the film.
Great classic. So many cryptic looks from so many fine actors/actresses designed to throw us off the scent as it were. Such great suspense created on such a simple set. And, Renee Godfrey, wow, was she looking good.
I always love these Sherlock Holmes movies made during WW2 ! I Told my wife earlier today I believe Nigel Bruce was the true star as his acting skills were simply great! So thank you Sauce! I for one watch all of your movies I can! I seriously appreciate you!
I love the sequence of Watson carrying out his own personal investigation, and himself getting interrogated by the professor under great duress. And the smile on Holmes' face after Watson's bumbling interrogation of the couple who stole a tea pot. "Serves them right if I got a bit tiddly".
I have seen most of these Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes - Dr Watson films. They are always enjoyed rewatched. They are the best Holmes’ films to me. They are timeless classics well crafted.
I'm not sure just what it is about a crime thriller set on a moving train, it's something I've never been able to put my finger on it, all i know is that there is something undeniably "relaxing" (for want of a better word) about these classic movies, they Never get old. Black & white movies by their very nature are so calming especially during the horrible wet & cold weather we are blessed with here in Britain, a nice warm fire, wrapped up in a fleece blanket and a classic black & white crime thriller/horror movie and you're guaranteed a warm & cosy hour of sheer entertainment. I have this fantastic Sherlock Holmes series of films starring the brilliant Basil Rathbone already on dvd but when i saw this on youtube i had to watch it as it's been a few years since I've seen these. THANKYOU SO MUCH for uploading these classics, im sure many others will enjoy these....THEY NEVER GET OLD!!
I just love the ramblings old houses on the MOOR. I've been reading mystery stories about the moors for a very long time & they never cease at add a sense of foreboding & a little fear. :-)
Indeed. I, particularly like The Hound of The Baskervilles. Baskerville Hall (in the book), was based upon 2 places, one, I forget where but the other was Hayford Hall which was just up the road from where I used to live in Lower Dean, South Dartmoor. So, The Hound of the Baskervilles means a lot to me. I love Dartmoor. I'm honestly not sure which version I like the most, Basil Rathbone's, Jeremy Brett's, Richard Roxburgh's or Matt Frewer's. They are all good for different reasons and cover different aspects that others leave out. The Richard Roxburgh one with John Nettles is really good overall but Richard wasn't my favourite Sherlock however, he wasn't bad at all. I can't decide who the best Sherlock is though, either Jeremy Brett or Basil Rathbone I'd say but that's simply my own opinion. You should try walking across Dartmoor during the night. I don't believe in anything supernatural but one has to be especially mindful at times like that. You could be walking along, unable to see your hand when it's touching your nose. All these noises that you've never heard are everywhere and so loud! All of a sudden your feet are wet..."Am I in a river? Will I drown any second?" Then you fall into mud and gorse getting cut to ribbons. Oh my God! There are horses in my face! They all spook and you are begging that it was only you that spooked them. The whole time you're thinking "it's not real, it's not real." All the while you're thinking that the Hound will pounce any second! The worst of course, is when your eyes start playing tricks on you and you think there's actually someone there until you realise it's just your brain. You come across a figure in the dark..."oh, it's just my brain". "Hello!" "Aaargh!" Why would they be walking their dog at 3am? Just to scare me. It definitely induces fear even during the day. It's so barren. That's why I like it. Anyway, I shall shut up now. I hope you enjoy more mystery stories. Take care.
There's not a wasted moment in these Sherlock Holmes Mysteries of Rathbone and Bruce. In between an hour and seventy-five minutes everything you will need to see, hear and know comes at you at a quick and measured pace. I like that. Compact, spare and very lean yet these movies stand-up so well to time and remain entertaining after repeated viewings. They are very hard-wearing after a fashion.
Love black and white movies, especially basil rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. The detective movies from the 1940s are also a favourite. Thank you for making these classics available.
Just since 2015, I know I've seen this movie at least ten times. I love old trains and this movie mostly takes place on one. The story moves quickly and it's my favorite Sherlock Holmes movie. As ever ,thank you for the perfect things you do.
Do you feel better now that you’re clear on the matter? If you’re still not clear then I’d suggest that you read up on what indicators show what Film Noir actually is. It will be readily clear why these Rathbone Holmes films are not Noir. They’re not even what Conan Doyle would recognise as Holmes and Watson! They can be quite entertaining, which is how I see them, but no more.
@@richardking3206 Richard I will have to do more homework before I make a post about a movie on youtube next time. I’ve watched this film at least 25 times. Love it. And the part that always gets me is Lady Margaret whose son is murdered on the train and she’s far more upset about losing her Diamond than her son.

Why is he in a suit and tie? I don't like the modern version of this classic novel. Guns? Fighting? No. Holms was all about brains, reasoning and deduction. I find them in 1940s Washington, DC very unlikely.

The train appears to be going about 200 mph. 😁
People’s tastes differ I guess! But for me personally, these old movies are just beautiful. Just the accents alone fill me with nostalgia, an era long gone. 😢
Love the Sherlock Holmes films😊
I remember sitting watching these with my dad as a kid, recorded on vhs and replayed over and over. Nowadays they take pride of place in a DVD box set. Amusing though how no one my own age seems to have even heard of these old films despite being so much better than any other rendition.

LOL, when I was a kid color TV's was the new thing! :)
These old movies are the best. They kept you on the edge of your seat. No special effects needed, you used your imagination.
There's no Sherlock like Basil Rathbone! What a noble profile! And Nigel Bruce is a bunderful wombler 😉 Cheers!
"Incidentally Watson, you'll notice that prominent men throughout history have prominent noses"
Your statement has put in a nutshell the whole truth about the immortal B.Rathbone ,the only actor who played Holmes so close to the original Doyle's immortal character
@@mariaretali Don't forget Peter Jeremy William Huggins, known professionally as Jeremy Brett, who portrayed Sherlock Holmes in four Granada TV series from 1984 to 1994 (41 episodes). If you haven't watched them, please do, you will not be disappointed.
Ciao from Little Italy 🇮🇹 Montréal
Yes, these films are great. When I was young, these are the films that kindled my interest in Holmes and the whole mystery genre.
January is my Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes month. I watch every Sherlock Holmes movie with these two stars. I've been doing this for such a long time that when press 'play' I feel like I am hanging out with two old friends.
Isn't it August now?
Greetings from Scotland. ..I totally get where your coming from...I used to watch these whilst staying at my grans at the weekend...I'd be around 8 at the time back in the late 70s...the scarlet claw scared me to death lol...simpler times and memories of people long gone...wouldn't trade those times for any sum
Thank you.
I love old movies like this family friendly thank you
I can totally immerse myself in the Rathbone/Sherlock films, they are a wonderful escape from the harsh realities of the 21st C.. I love the simplicity of this fictional world even the murders are quite gentlemanly if that's at all possible. Basil is truly the epitimy of Holmes.
Holmes by the one and only Rathbone , a unique acting treat and a timeless example of how the Holmes character should be assumed on screen
Watson by the one and only Bruce. A sickening parody, portraying Dr. Watson as a MoronicBrainDamagedAsshole. This series is literally the only adaptation to show Watson as a complete and utter imbecile. It's pathetic.
These movies are the best, Sherlock Holmes is on every Sunday morning at 6:30 on the movie channel free TV you don't need cable for any of these movies they're on free all the time love the entire Sherlock home series I can watch him a thousand times. Thank you so much for posting these wonderful videos.
This is the third or fourth time over many years that I have viewed "Terror by Night." The plot, pacing, and acting by the primary and supporting cast is of high quality entertainment. This viewing was enhanced by the high quality visual and auditory clarity of the film.
How many times have you watched it now? (5 or so years later...)
Still relevant in 2022. You can't stop an excellent piece of artwork.
I can't wait until I can use tiddly in Scrabble.

I have seen most of these Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes - Dr Watson films. They are always enjoyed rewatched. They are the best Holmes’ films to me. They are timeless classics well crafted.
Fantastic and the orchestra at the start gets me every time, brilliant and i think Basil Rathbone
is my all time favorite Holmes
In my opinion, the best Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson..
No other actor is in Rathbone's league. He was incomparable. And I've seen them all.
100%
True
Jeremy Brett much superior.
@@justininfrance He was good.
I think Christopher Lee is just as good.
Ha! I think the coffin maker also played the sea captain in the movie with the "Good Comrades". Love recognizing the same actors in different films.
Great stuff. I love B&W old shows. Whoever took the time to do this is a real back-in-the-oldays good guy and I thank them very much!
Luv B&W CLASSIC FILMS!😀
"Hello!"
"Aaargh!"
Why would they be walking their dog at 3am? Just to scare me.
It definitely induces fear even during the day. It's so barren. That's why I like it.
Anyway, I shall shut up now. I hope you enjoy more mystery stories. Take care.
Grew up watching these with my Mom late night. Seen every one of them with Basil and Nigel.
Lestrade was a pip aswell.
Me and my we special freind Margaret loved these films called each other sherlock and Holmes sadly she passed away always in my heart
,were you able to solve it probably moriarty
Sorry for your loss...
Touched by the humble kaffar? How could they say such a thing in a movie. That's demeaning.
@@reggaefan2700 a different time
So sorry for ur los, I pray for u and her family, and yes I love these old movies as well
They always have these very classy and elegant ladies as the leads and villains.
Rathbone and Bruce make a great Holmes/Watson tag team. Many thanks for sharing...
Don't worry, the sleeves will ride up with wear.
My favorite Sherlock Holmes movie. Thankyou
Love black and white movies, especially basil rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. The detective movies from the 1940s are also a favourite. Thank you for making these classics available.
B&W. movies,,,,
the best of the
best,!!
Just since 2015, I know I've seen this movie at least ten times. I love old trains and this movie mostly takes place on one. The story moves quickly and it's my favorite Sherlock Holmes movie. As ever ,thank you for the perfect things you do.
I grew up watching reruns of these films. Loved them then. Love them even more today!
Basil is the quintessential Sherlock can watch it any number of times thanks for uploading
Basil Ratbone and Nigel Bruce are arguably the best mystery solving duo in film noir history and certainly the most entertaining.
Sorry, but these Holmes films are not Film Noir!
@@richardking3206 do you feel better now that you have that off your chest?
Do you feel better now that you’re clear on the matter? If you’re still not clear then I’d suggest that you read up on what indicators show what Film Noir actually is. It will be readily clear why these Rathbone Holmes films are not Noir. They’re not even what Conan Doyle would recognise as Holmes and Watson! They can be quite entertaining, which is how I see them, but no more.
@@richardking3206 Richard I will have to do more homework before I make a post about a movie on youtube next time. After looking at the definition of film noir I can see where I may have been erroneous in my characterization of that particular film. I do think that maybe one or two of the Sherlock Holmes films starring Mr. Rathbone could fall under the category of film noir, don't you, of am I still off base. Oh I apologize about the previous post it was rude and uncalled for. I'm sure you made your post with the best of intentions.
I’ve watched this film at least 25 times. Love it. And the part that always gets me is Lady Margaret whose son is murdered on the train and she’s far more upset about losing her Diamond than her son.
Nigel Bruce... Need I say more.? Brilliant!, "we can't tell that without an au-TOPSY" ... also brilliant when he's doing the "questioning". This film was his finest hour.. Though obviously great in all of these.. His whit is soooo good... "Serves them right if I got a bit tiddly" ..
Saw them all back in the Seventies on TV, really enjoy seeing them again. Thanks!
Have the entire collection on DVD, always takes me back to my childhood, watching these movies on BBC2.
Made between 1939 and 1946, a brilliant movie series :)
I just love everything about these films the chivalry the smoking rooms the tweed Watsons buffoonery, the poker faces , the comb overs, oh and the lady in the black lace , wasn’t she a Dish...Absolutely Marvellous...
Yes indeed Barry Norman
Thanks Barry Norman
This is when quality films were made. Today Hollywood is a desert.
Films these days are rubbish in my opinion ha. These older films have a meaning. Suitable for everyone.
They made a lot of crap back then, too. We just haven't turned those movies into classics.
Lee Larson - A veritable wasteland - thank heavens we’ve still got ‘The Kardashians’...
@@zarasbazaar Everything they make now is crap!!!!
TODAY REPRESENTS THE AGE OF MEDIOCRITY!
Love these old black and white movies💝💝💝💝💝
Unknown by many: Rathbone was a fine athlete. Very capable fencer.
He was also prime cricket player on Hollywood British Actors Team which met often n challenged other teams
Other members in good standing included David Niven Ronald Coleman. and such. It was known as a randy and jolly. Bunch. Played practical jokes on each other n non Brtish. Hollywood types. ;)
He was also an Officer in trenches during the First World War.
That’s awesome
I wish he could come and do my fencing. It's getting knackered
A real swashbuckler in 'Zorro'
This is one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes movies: great acting by ALL of the cast members! Thanks for sharing...
I've always love Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Thanks for downloading this and sharing it.
The best Sherlock Holmes! And also love the Charlie Chan series!
Why is he in a suit and tie?
I don't like the modern version of this classic novel.
Guns? Fighting?
No.
Holms was all about brains, reasoning and deduction.
I find them in 1940s Washington, DC very unlikely.
This is awesome, I watch most often. And Jaydogg I agree, Charlie Chan series is great as well.
SO DO I!!!

Probably my favourite film of all time. I don't know the name of the actress that was bringing the coffin of her 'mother' to Edinburgh, but I find her to be the most beautiful lady that I've ever seen, my missus agrees with me. She, whoever she is, is absolutely beautiful. Just saying.

Thank you so much for these immortal films. As an Indian and a devout Sherlock fan, not many Indians are led here but who are, wouldn't leave it unseen. Transcending countries of course, the entire world wouldn't leave it unwatched.

Love how Basil fixes his hair after almost thrown from train and fight scene. Mr. Cool under pressure
CW 12 Give that advice to Boris, and more pointedly, to our dear leader, Hair Failure.
Basil Rathbone was HOT!
Sean Connery playing James Bond fixed his hair the same way after that scuffle with the enemy in Russia with Love during the train scene. So suave
great setting and an undervalued gem of the series imo
Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful movie
