Saw this movie on its first release 60 or so years ago. Thank you for the superb quality of this upload. Great cast. I have read of the various production problems but I don`t think the result is half bad. I like the idea of ballet star Robert Helpmann, who makes an excellent villain of Prince Tuan, putting the actors through the steps of the Military Two Step.

I remember this movie as a child. It put my fellow Europeans as the heroes. It fails to mention part of the reason for the Boxer rebellion was the forced importation of Heroin from Afghanistan and India, in exchange for Silver and Tea, by European powers, among other liberties. It caused massive damage to Chinese society. Heroin became cheap and plentiful, and a massive addiction problem began in society. The Europeans were destroying Chinese culture too.

Fun fact: The melody you hear at 1:50 is *not* the German national anthem. Being a federal state, Germany had no official anthem back then. The common replacement (Wikipedia calls it "Kaiserhymne" or "imperial anthem") was "Heil Dir im Siegerkranz", which used the melody of "God save the King/Queen", and that would've been awkward as it is played a few seconds later by the Brits.
The melody played is from "Lied der Deutschen" (music by Joseph Haydn), the German national anthem in one form another since 1922.

    • @dino7307

The Haydn melody is actually "Gott erhalte", the Austro-Hungarian anthem. It became the German anthem only after Austria-Hungary was dissolved in 1918. Austria-Hungary was part of the 8 nation alliance, but was simply omitted from this otherwise great movie.

It was the end of the road for that kind of movie, though. Dr. No of 1962 and the Spaghetti Westerns that started in 1964, and the new wave movies in France, set the stage for the end of these classic mass scenery movies. Is that a pity?

This is a Hollywood sixties , high budget, period saga. Expecting to learn about the Boxer Rebellion from this movie is like expecting to learn about Egypt or Rome from "Cleopatra". Viewed as such, it was an entertaining movie with classic actors. Also, I was reminded how old time Hollywood viewed the world and how they operated in the early sixties. Western colonialism was OK, as was not casting Chinese actors (except for the little girl) in a movie about China.

Cleopatra is actually pretty accurate. Apart from the way she dresses and wears her makeup and clothes. Also according to sources we have she and Caesar started their affair the night they met so huge chunk of the movie is pointless (but made to some type of audiences…). And he was the womanizer and it’s more Augustan propaganda that she was sexy seductress. Caesar never publicly acknowledged Caesarion either.
And there is removal of characters (and Agrippa is too old for example) some details changed like Caesar didn’t burn library of Alexandria (some houses storing books in harbor did burn so it’s not like they just pulled it out of thin air). But overall it did a much better job than any other Cleopatra movie out there and how Rome series did Cleopatra.

To which nationality do you think David Niven belonged?
If you'd like to check you will find David Niven was a former Britsih Army officer who served including with distinction, 'doing his bit' during World War 2 eventually becoming a lieutenant-colonel.
This splendid film ( not historically accurate though) has David Niven's 'Britishness' written all over it.

In the past few months, the Boxers have become heroes to the people in China, at least according to what’s buzzing on the internet. Recently, four professors from Cornell University were stabbed in Jilin Province, and believe it or not, a lot of people are actually seeing this as a just act, like a successful pushback against Western influence. If you're traveling or doing business in China, be careful about your personal safety. If things keep getting worse, we might see more foreigners getting hurt, or even something as bad as the Boxer Rebellion back in 1900.

Hello from Holland. This is the first time i hear that 4 gentleman got stabbed in the Jilin provence. Why i did not heard about this and other important events in the global news,newspapers,t.v.?Is it dangerous for western bussines or politics? And how sick it is that people call those murderers heroes, sad,in the first place for the family of the killed men,and sad i realize there is a lot more whe don't know.

The movie is full of mistakes, yet in the beginning the german anthem at: th-cam.com/video/ePAHo9yEFgA/w-d-xo.html
Which is the anthem today, but was not in 1900, when it was the same tune as is "god save the queen" then.
One should not mistake it as historical education...
