Fun fact: The melody you hear at 1:50 is *not* the German national anthem. Being a federal state, Germany had no official anthem back then. The common replacement (Wikipedia calls it "Kaiserhymne" or "imperial anthem") was "Heil Dir im Siegerkranz", which used the melody of "God save the King/Queen", and that would've been awkward as it is played a few seconds later by the Brits. The melody played is from "Lied der Deutschen" (music by Joseph Haydn), the German national anthem in one form another since 1922.
The Haydn melody is actually "Gott erhalte", the Austro-Hungarian anthem. It became the German anthem only after Austria-Hungary was dissolved in 1918. Austria-Hungary was part of the 8 nation alliance, but was simply omitted from this otherwise great movie.

a 1963 flic. War & Peace, massive movie, 1956. Ben Hur 1959, Cleopatra 1963. Those were the days of old-style, old-school, highly expensive Hollywood productions. It was the end of the road for that kind of movie, though. Dr. No of 1962 and the Spaghetti Westerns that started in 1964, and the new wave movies in France, set the stage for the end of these classic mass scenery movies. Is that a pity?

This is a Hollywood sixties , high budget, period saga. Expecting to learn about the Boxer Rebellion from this movie is like expecting to learn about Egypt or Rome from "Cleopatra". Viewed as such, it was an entertaining movie with classic actors. Also, I was reminded how old time Hollywood viewed the world and how they operated in the early sixties. Western colonialism was OK, as was not casting Chinese actors (except for the little girl) in a movie about China.
Cleopatra is actually pretty accurate. Apart from the way she dresses and wears her makeup and clothes. Also according to sources we have she and Caesar started their affair the night they met so huge chunk of the movie is pointless (but made to some type of audiences…). And he was the womanizer and it’s more Augustan propaganda that she was sexy seductress. Caesar never publicly acknowledged Caesarion either. And there is removal of characters (and Agrippa is too old for example) some details changed like Caesar didn’t burn library of Alexandria (some houses storing books in harbor did burn so it’s not like they just pulled it out of thin air). But overall it did a much better job than any other Cleopatra movie out there and how Rome series did Cleopatra.
