    In this video I take you through one of the methods I use for priming models, hand painting on a Gundam Mr Color lacquer paint base coat. This sets the foundation for further coats of Mr Color and other brands of Japanese lacquer paints to be applied as color coats over the top, all by hand brush.

    I've read soo much on gunpla painting and practically everything points to spray priming, airbrushing and clean sterile lines, and so little else, that I assumed every other way was "wrong". This runs so counter to just about everything else in art creation where you start off pristine and loosen it up, and not the other way around (which I think you even mentioned?). I really had no idea that with patience you could hand prime these. I'm going to try this process! And thanks for labelling what materials you use!

      Hi tindr jerk , thanks for the awesome comment and yes, you get it!! I can paint a bunch of ways but I figured if I start Gunpla and TH-cam, I should do something "different" for a cool start. It's funny isn't it how one way has become so established isn't it? Good luck with trying this out, it's not easy and takes practice but I much prefer this to masking and so on. To me, that's just not painting but more like working in a factory! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series and more coming soon!

    I can appreciate the content that you bring forth about being connected to the model by holding it. Also the bottom up method that you talk about by starting big and messy as an artist then zoning in to work on those details, in a way tightening up your work. I can very well relate to this and as I mentioned appreciate it. Thank you. Keep it up.

    Love the video! Maybe it's just because I'm new to Gunpla, but I wouldn't have expected someone as seasoned as yourself to be applying a basecoat by hand, let alone on the fully constructed suit. Using the same paintbrush for a decade is impressive to a newbie like me, too!

      Hi Ecksphyre and yes I know what you mean! It's become usual to associate brush with noob and airbrush with "pro" right!?! I used to believe this as well and couldn't wait to graduate to an airbrush when I came back to making models as an adult. I still often use an airbrush but it's just another tool. Now for me, using a brush is the ultimate expression of my version of model art. ^^

      No problem! I've been building for a while now, and I always built gundams from the perspective of a gundam modeler (seam line removal, priming, airbrushing pre-shade/post-shade, and adding custom paneling lines.) So seeing you just adding Mr.Color Brown right on top of the plastic shocked me. But I know that you know what you're doing, so this is very interesting and exciting to see and learn. • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eden J, sure thing and happy to help!! Excalibur - there's nothing special about the brush at all except that it's a survivor. It's just a round, synthetic brush that I picked up in a book store cheaply. It's just a very handy size, not too big and not too small. Using the lacquer thinner, either by Gaia Notes or GSI CREOS (Gunze) Mr Color has kept it in good condition too. Even if I use it in acrylics, I will clean it with their thinner. Would you also like to see about brush choices in follow up videos?

    • @theBaron0530
      @theBaron0530 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Synthetic?! Wow! I would have thought it was some Kolinsky sable or something. I have a couple that have lasted that long, too, but a lot more that have worn out in the meantime.

    Hey Lincoln, I know this video is a few years old now, but I had a question. You said that other model kit manufacturers bake their kits after they are molded and that strengthens the bonds and mends fractures in the plastic. Do you know any more about that process? Could one, in theory, bake a Bandai PS runner to mend those stress fractures?

  • @rayau1980
    @rayau1980 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow Lincoln this is really informative! Do you use a respirator when painting lacquers like this? I'd imagine there's still hazardous vapors from the thinner.

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ray Au, glad you liked it! No, there's little to no danger really. The paint isn't being atomised into a mist like it is when you use an airbrush. However, I only do this when I have good ventilation, same for when using enamel thinners. :)

    That's odd how Bandai would partner up with Mr Hobby if their paints/thinners can damage the kits so easily. I remember that being the reason why Bandai shied away from ABS inner frames on MGs, but I'm curious about why they still partner with them if the paints/thinners are still harmful to the plastic (nothing against Mr Hobby, really great paints)

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      best choice in Japan and most open to collaborations I guess. Tamiya doesn't do collabs and the other guys are too small. Mr Color works Hasegawa too and they are all, big Shizuoka brands, I guess they keep them in the family kind of thing. :)

  • @lon242
    @lon242 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Lincoln, been going thru your older vids and was surprised to see this. I have got to try these paints. If they're so tough you're using them as a primer (being lacquer, they must etch in to the plastic well?) I'm all for it, airbrushing primer on each piece is boring and hurts my trigger finger after a long spray session.

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ion242, that's exactly right! They are a also a type of primer, truth be known. All lacquer paints etch into plastic. If you check out my video on the Air Cobra Airbrush and EVO Surface from Gaia Notes, you'll also see that they call their product a Surfacer, and not a primer dude to the additional properties it uses. Cool right? Please do understand, there is a big downside to this - the smell and fumes. Must have proper ventilation but in spire of this, I am a HUGE lacquer fan as you can see!

    • @lon242
      @lon242 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lincoln! Checked that vid out, the Gaianotes EVO looks similar to Mr. Surfacer, which I do have a jar of... it's tough to clean out of an airbrush, I guess thanks to its filling/surfacing properties. I haven't tried hand painting it though, maybe I should, like you did stippling with EVO.
      I just ordered a bottle each of Mr. Color propeller color and semi-gloss black as "primer" colors, and will see how it goes. 2 quick Qs on "priming" with Mr. Color if ya don't mind? You don't find it necessary rough up the surface with sanding prior to handbrushing it? And do you find the finish is durable enough, even with Gunpla typically having parts that may rub up against each other (for example, Barbatos side skits' contacting its legs)?

  • @gyulsary1
    @gyulsary1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @michaelong6206
    @michaelong6206 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi may I just ask one or two questions? So basically you're not using a paint that's specifically for priming, more like lacquer paint can act as a primer?

    Hey Mr. Wright, I’m planning on painting for the first time on my next model (Geara Zulu).Just a few questions. Do you need a specific paint to prime/base coat? I’ve been using Citadel paints for a few small things.I use the “air” type because I was told it was pre thinned. I was planning on using darker colors like dark blues, grays and maybe black. What advice would you recommend for painting with these? Lastly I’ve been alittle confused about using washes? That I assume double as panel lining and giving a tint to the model. How exactly do I make a wash or are are there paints that’s are a wash that I can use? I’m apologize for dragging this comment out. I’m such a perfectionist and want to be sure I’m doing the best to bring the model out. Yet, I’m not expecting to to be flawless the first time either. I just want a better understanding. Thanks!

    Great to see your videos - really interesting technique too - if a bit 'alien' to me ;-). Have you always painted this way or is it something you developed into? One thing - imho the video would be so much easier on the ear if you lose the 'music'!

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi RobertSE6! Great to hear from you and thank you. Yes, I understand it's quite alien to most people and me too when I was first experimenting with it. No, no, I only started to paint this way when I began making Ma.K kits in 2008. Before that, I was a GW painter with acrylics and airbrushed a couple of tanks. But, I did hand paint airplanes as a kid with Humbrol enamels.
      Music - that's a tough one. I appreciate your feedback. If I don't put it in, people ask "why no music?". :D Funny right? It's tough to keep everyone happy. :)

    do you find any difficulties using lacquer paint because of it's quickly dry?

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      excellent question and no, in fact it works better because it dries quickly! I tried a different brand of paint recently and it dried too slowly and I was quite frustrated. I LOVE the fast dry finish!! :) I hope that helps!!

    Any tips on how to paint a model With one hand?

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be challenging and time consuming, I would make sure the model or parts were fixed, either onto a base or on pins so that they were stable and in a good position and then paint from there. Good luck mate!

    is it good to use a vallejo german red brown primer? instead of a propeller paint?

    I am very surprised you just "slap" the paint straight on the model. How are you finding the paint holds up to wear and handling? I've been taking my first step into Gunpla from miniature wargaming and as far as I can see everybody is rather firm on the fact you really need to use some form of primer to get a durable paint coat in the end.

      Hi Tim and yes, I really get that! Compared to how painting is usually shown the way I do it must come as a show. I also started with wargaming minis and learned that way of painting first, years before starting down this path. If you are using those kinds of soft, acrylic paints then be all means, you should use a primer. Particularly if you are going to handle the model - say for wargaming. Primers are lacquer paints (usually) and they add various amounts of filler to them for the different grades. Here, the Gundam Mr Color I am using is a lacquer paint. It's it's own primer, but doesn't contain (much) filler.
      Would it be of interest to you for me to go into depth on paint types and how to use them in subsequent videos?

      Laquer paints make good primer themselves. Some modellers use lacquer paints as a base and then use acrylics to paint.

      Justin Case Exactly, in fact, I have painted some acrylics on top of this one as well - after the main white lacquer Color was applied. 👍🏼

      While there are videos out there discussing the different paint types, hearing your opinions and experiences with them would be most welcome. I'll admit that in my case part of the problem is translation. While translating should be straight forwards I always find there are fringe cases that make things complicated. I think that within the Gunpla community there is also a tendency to primer and especially top coat since most do keep their models posable and thus will be handling them a lot more than static models. (maybe even more than wargaming models, which can be lifted by the base)

      Paint on Plastic by Lincoln Wright after watching the other videos in this series and other videos I understand, also a question, I plan on painting a gundam for the first time and I was wondering about priming, people say it's very necessary, does this base coat achieve the same thing and/or is priming unnecessary for hand painting, I'd love to see a video priming/ base coating with a more generic color, I plan on painting the HG HEKIJA released this month in its default colours to just make it look better would love tips

    • @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
      @PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks Patrick, appreciate that you took the time to watch the other videos. Priming is laying down a tough base coat paint that has more bite and sticks well to the plastic. No, it's not 100% necessary and it also depends on the paints you plan to use. For the paints I have been showing in this video, Mr Color by GSI Creos, they work as primers as well as colour coats so eliminate that extra step. If you are using a very soft paint like Vallejo for example, that does require a base primer. I'm also experimenting with some new paints from the USA, th-cam.com/video/sCs-OQCI4wM/w-d-xo.html to see if we can get away with not needing that primer coat too.
      One more! You can also achieve a very quick and easy "primer coat" by adding a layer by rattle can as I did with this one th-cam.com/video/xK852ew2Z9I/w-d-xo.html
