Talking about being successful. Im 7 years clean and sober, did 10 years in prison and now off parole, it took work on myself while always being willing to learn to be where i am now. I had to take full accountability of my past choices, accept that i was a P.O.S. person before i could start to make strides. Now i am married, have 3 wonderful children and a job that pays the bills. If you work hard enough you can get yourself out of any hoke you've dug and reach a level you didnt think possible.
My one question is I'm trying to figure out a new career path that can give a little safety for my family but keep getting shot down because of my criminal past. How can you actually work hard enough if you're never given the chance? I know how much i screwed up now i just want to contribute to my community and keep my family safe as possible in these times.

There are quite a few fighter pilots who have talked about the disconnect they have to killing someone compared to infantry. I had a scout master that was a f105 pilot in Vietnam and he would talk very casually about the times he dropped napalm into a random jungle clearing because some guy on the ground told him too, and I had another scout master who was a Huey gunner in Vietnam and it was really hard to get him to talk because he had seen so much. They two men, while having fought in the same war, had completely different views about the death toll they witnessed.

When my dad died in my arms it was awful experience, but when I see or hear stories and videos on internet of other people dying, it is more or less meh. Like people dying in Middle East or Ukraine right now, if you are in America, you don't care, but since I am nearby Ukraine, I care about them more than Middle Easterners. It all is just a perspective of distance from death.

Yet another solid podcast from you guys. The last part of this one hit home for me, the difference between knowing someone is dead, compared to seeing them die face to face is a big one. I’m not a vet, never served, (athsma stops you from being shot at apparently), but I’ve recently been diagnosed with PTSD from an accident at work, where I saw a kid (18) get crushed to death right in front of me. He was screaming right at me to get the shit off him but I couldn’t, he suffocated right there looking at me. It’s unbelievable how much that experience has fucked my brain, and the non stop guilt I feel for not being able to do anything for him, at times it’s unbearable. Just don’t know how to beat it, but you guys bring a little light to it, I understand to a point what many vets go through, I don’t know how they survive having seen so much more of it. Thank you guys for talking about it, it’s important to many of us, even those that aren’t vets.

What Brandon is talking about SDI is exactly how my HVAC/R school went. Was it an important part of starting out? Yes. Does it qualify you for any job? No. You learn more in 3 months on the job than I learned in my 11 month program. It’s not a scam, it’s just not the end all be all. Go to school, Apply yourself, and understand that graduation day is where work and learning actually starts.

    • @Cpt.0bvious
      @Cpt.0bvious 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

My issue with SDI was the amount of “this is in no way applicable or just blatantly wrong” stuff (at least in the first years worth). Like one of my weeks assignment was discussing the cycles of function for an electric motor Gatling gun (like the M134) vs the cycle of function for the chain gun on an Apache helicopter or a discussion post talking about the merits of using birdshot for home defense and using wadcutter ammo for defensive rounds because it holds itself together better than ball ammo. Plenty of outdated fudd lore in those courses

Guys that last half hour was one of the best conversations I've heard you have. Thank you for heing open about mental health, thats something that could help a lotta guys just hearing folls talk openly about it. And Donut: They were kindof talking about it without saying it directly. It was a disconnect from seeing a plane or even see a pilot get hit in combat as opposed to after combat. Im sure he saw plenty of his fellow airmen killed or return in bad shape after a mission so it wasn't as if Bong did not understand there were people in the planes, its that when he wasnt in combat mode, and he hid their humanity as the amorphous enemy pilot. They were not just 'enemy' they were real guys with families and aspirations and the whole gamut which can be forgotten about when they are just seen as targets. If you've ever spoken to a bomber pilot or even today drone operators, there is that same disconnect. One KNOWS there's people at the target site, but one is removed from the visceral element. Similar to the concept of mobs. If you were working a riot and the mob attacked you, you would have a difficult time diferentating an individual their humanity gets blended into the group. I think for Bong, an equivalent for you would be if you stopped a criminal in the act of commiting a crime. You dont see that person as anything but a person doing crime, and you must stop them. But, after you stop them, you make the arrest you put them in your squad car, you talk to them/ interrogate them, that person is now an individual. You can maybe not agree with what they did but you understand why they did what they did. Maybe for example you find out the guy has a kid and he's slinging meth to make money, or whatever. You will react differently with a person after rhe action is done because you get a chance to see that person as a person, no lables, not an enemy, not as a criminal but a dude doing X because of Y. I can see a soft hearted person who was simply doing his job could compartamentalize an enemy as an enemy thats it. Target acquired, target down, go home. Because IF he started thinking about the wife and kids that other guy left at home or the mother crying every night because her son was away, he would be the tally for one of their pilots with his bones mouldering away at the bottom of the ocean. Only when he was not in danger could he see their humanity, and I can see how when he had time how that could make him sick to his stomach, because of what he did, because he had to.

The problem with shooting planes, tanks, ships, etc., is the disassociation with the human beings inside them, because you're seeing the exterior, a machine. Your brain, subconsciously, is like, "I'm just shooting machines," or, "I'm just bombing buildings/structures," and because the gore and horrors are contained and/or blown to smithereens, it's super easy for one to just think of it as destroying materials, not human life.
In a way, it's kind of a blessing, as taking human life is very taxing on someone with a conscience. My dad, unfortunately, didn't have that luxury when he fought in Vietnam on the ground. One night his position was overrun, and there were a few times the enemy saw their fox hole and charged it. Young boys, literal children, and he had to kill them or be killed himself. I asked him how he manages so well, as he doesn't exhibit any signs of PTSD. He told me as far as he's concerned, he didn't kill anyone, the politicians that forced him to join (you couldn't get a job if you had a draft card, so become homeless, a criminal, or enlist) were the ones pulling the trigger. He also said if you'd been in his shoes, you'd have shot them, too. Or you'd be dead, and your philosophy would mean nothing because you're dead. He also decided the way he's gonna square himself with God, to make things right, is to cherish the life he has been given, be the best damn father he can be, best husband he can be, and conduct himself with honor and integrity. He hopes that's enough, and if it isn't, well, that's between him and the big man upstairs Himself.
I have never served - wanted to, but things didn't play out that way. Looking back, I'm glad i didn't, because I'm around Eli's age, and the RoE back then were fucked. As I've grown wiser, I realize there are plenty of ways a civilian can honor the fallen, and the sacrifices the few have made for the many. Saying, "Thank you for your service," is just lip service if you then turn around and vote for warhawk politicians - regardless of party affiliation. My dad suggests if you want to really thank a veteran, get involved with your local community. Be a Boy Scout troop leader, join a charity like the Elks, Lions, or Rotary clubs, be the voice to counter woke city council shitbags, or even just raise kids that strangers respect. Stop voting for people just because of the letter next to their name, because that's how warhawks get power. These are just some ideas of what you can do. The sacrifices you make to better your country don't have to be on the battlefield.
It can be little things, like for example, an elderly woman was struggling to afford groceries ahead of me in line. She was counting out pennies. I told her to not worry about it, handed the clerk a $10 bill to cover what she owed, and gave her the change, then helped her load her groceries into the car. Cost me $10 and a few minutes of my time, but my dad crawled around in Vietnam getting shot at and seeing people getting blown up, so in the grand scheme of things, I have no excuse not to help someone in need if I can. I've also volunteered to help the homeless through my church, and I've even volunteered as a RSO with my local shooting association to help the range be silly affordable ($50/year membership, or $10 for the day if not a member). There are many ways to help, and to better the world around you. That's how you thank a veteran for their service. Live a life worthy of their sacrifices.

clarifying point for your comments about our video.
The “is SDI a scam” video is and has never been our channels “personality” you all know that. it’s a single video we made discussing to our small audience why we’ve told them we don’t recommend the school; the video blowing up was not our main intention- but it’s good that it has. We’re silly dudes who make silly videos and have been doing this for years.
2/4 of you guys know us and 4/4 of you guys have met us; could have easily called or messaged us for any clarifications. (we still love you all, our points on SDI echo the 15% overall approval rating they carry)
We did not switch the thumbnail; it’s been that one since the start.
Our complaints were three fold, you covered one fold; our original video is the rebuttal as our largest complaint was coursework with invalid and conflicting information. The GI bill is the only perspective you have on the college that works, since it costs you “nothing” that’s the only way the value is justified. If you were asked to spend $22,000 of your own dollars on this you’d also feel ripped off.
our “you can learn this on youtube” is referencing the fact their their course material is LINKING people to youtube for lessons; which further pushes the value down. That was the whole point of that statement.

The only thing that could have made the video better would have been Nic actually getting a chance to talk to GySgt Hathcock for it to help put the BS claims about his exploits being falsified to rest.
Or even better....imagine if Gunny Hathcock had been still alive to see/be shown the PewView/TFE/Ballistic HighSpeed video where his most famous kill was recreated and verified as achievable as reported. He knew what he did, and I doubt the haters ever slowed him down, but clear proof of how he took down Cobra at 100K FPS would have been nice for him to have.

Can i just say that out of ALL the episodes of this podcast, this one spoke to me the most and hit me a little different. I graduated high school, went right into the work force because military service was not an option for me and have never set foot in a college classroom. I have taught myself to build computers on my own, fix moderately complex issues involving security issues and self taught myself on most of the Windows platform and how it works, I know how to run and fix issues in OBS when it comes to streaming and I am currently working toward learning the Audio and Video side of streaming so that I can help other people learn..
When Brandon said that "sweat equity" means something, it hit me hard. I have been in customer service for 2 decades and use my skills that I have learned in that 2 decades to help run a podcast with friends(5 years running), I am a community manager for a friend of mines streaming, and I help with all their audio and visual issues when it comes to streaming. There is something to be said about being self taught and lord knows this episode showed me that there are people out there that appreciate that.

Gonna be "that guy" about Molotovs cocktail. It wasn't used against tank treads. The original plan was to use them to blind tanks by throwing them on drivers view port. Then someone figured out Russian tank engines' air intake would suck the burning liquid to the crew space. So then the practice became to immobilize the tank, and someone would go yeet the cocktail to engine air intake
