Latvian Golden Eagle~ Spilve Returns & Offers Food To Deceased Klints! A Very Touching Moment 7.5.20

- Spilve returns to her nest today three days after her last visit on July 2nd. She flies in with prey in her beak and she quickly offers it to Klints. She looks at him and waits and brings the food right up to his face. What a special moment it is to watch this first time Mom still try and care for her deceased chick. She even pulls up the old prey and lays it down in front of Klints to entice him to eat. So bittersweet to see her instinctively trying to feed him as that is what she has done for the past 8 weeks. She stays 10 minutes and then flies off leaving the prey. I have never witnessed anything like this before in all my years of eagle watching! Spilve is a very dedicated Mom bless her heart. Virsis, a Golden Eagle male, and Spilve, a newly-mature Golden Eagle female, breed in their artificial nest, which was installed in 2010. Most recently the eagles successfully breed here in 2016. The nest is located in a bog on an island managed by the Latvian State Forests. Last year a female (Spilve) appeared regularly but she was too young to breed. For 2020, Spilve laid two eggs - on March 28th and April 1st. Egg #1 is non viable & egg #2 hatched on May 10, 2020. Klints passed away on July 1st 2020 from starvation after Dad Virsis went missing and food was scarce.

This is so heartbreaking. I had so hoped she had moved on. Thank you for letting us know. Poor Mama. I pray every day she finds a new mate and they have happy, healthy fledglings.
In ten years of watching cams I have never seen this before either, Lady Hawk. It is beautiful to see the incredible bond she still has with Klints. I suppose we can’t move on until she does. Sigh. 💔

This was so heartbreaking to watch.I cried for this family and hope better days ahead for this young mother.
Normally I wouldn’t want to click a video like this because it’s just so sad, but I had to in this case, because shes such an amazingly dedicated mom and its such a heartbreaking moment I felt like I had to be there with her in any way I can, not like she would appreciate a humans presence even if I was actually there, let alone just watching a video after the event already happened, but I felt It was the least I could do, which I know sounds silly. I feel so bad for her 😢🥺, thank you for posting this Lady hawk, honoring her dedication as a mother as well as the memory of Klints, and for helping make us all respect this eagle mama just a little bit more

I am thankful that God gave me the strength to watch this video, to honor both our beloved dead Klints, and his beloved mom, Spilve. And to still hope that Virsis is alive...
More people have mourned over this baby eagle’s passing then many humans have received...
Through the gift of these cameras, we are able to watch the lifespan of these birds from being laid, to the end of life. Although they do not see us, we watch over them kind of like the angels watch over us and are unseen, but their presence is there...they are loved, and we are loved. Klint’s life here is done; his spirit goes back to the Creator, who is love. And even though he’s in the hereafter, we still love him in the here and now which is awesome! That love gave me the strength to watch this!

Thank you Lady Hawk! such a beautiful video of Spilve with Klints, she is so dedicated to her baby, I felt a tear roll down my cheek as she placed the food near Klints and I wanted with all my heart for Klints to get up and enjoy the meal, I wanted this more for Spilve than myself as I know Klints is gone and Spilve does not understand yet, she is so beautiful, oh bugger I'm crying again,I wish with all of my heart Spilve finds a new mate and has a wonderful and very long life and makes lot's of beautiful Golden Eagle baby's and never has to travel to far for food and just lives peacefully with her mate! Spilve still misses her child so much, and it comforts her that bringing some food to him.

Lady Hawk I have been trying to understand what I’m about to ask you, why would they allow this baby to starve and suffer to death? If the Golden Eagle is endangered why not help him to help the population, I do understand nature and laws but this was and continues to bother a lot of people. I am not being rude with you by no means but I watch a lot of your videos and you seem to know a lot. I also trust what you say. Thank you for all you do.

Lady Hawk I think I read that it is an artificial nest meaning man made I guess. Could it be placed in a new spot that's got more prey available for the eagles? Will they keep coming back to a nest that's poorly located when it's time to breed again?
