  • Spivle returns for a second visit today to the nest. She flew in empty taloned and goes over to the side of the nest and picks up a small bird that she had previously brought in for Klints and takes it over to him. She lays it down next to Klints and then picks up the old prey stringy nestover and consumes it along with the other leftover food. She areates around the nest and studies Klints looking still for some movement. She then will fly off the nest. Will Spilve return again? I think she probably will as she is processing the death of her eaglet. Thank you for watching!

Virsis, a Golden Eagle male, and Spilve, a newly-mature Golden Eagle female, breed in their artificial nest, which was installed in 2010. Most recently the eagles successfully breed here in 2016. The nest is located in a bog on an island managed by the Latvian State Forests. Last year a female (Spilve) appeared regularly but she was too young to breed. For 2020, Spilve laid two eggs - on March 28th and April 1st. Egg #1 is non viable & egg #2 hatched on May 10, 2020. Klints passed away on July 1st 2020 from starvation after Dad Virsis went missing and food was scarce.

This is beyond heartbreaking. Poor mom is trying her best just not understanding what has happened. My heart just aches for her watching this. Thank you LH for posting this so we can learn from these amazing eagles. I know in time she will move on. But how amazing is it to witness this grieving process. Sending love to all who follow this nest. ❤️🦅🌈

What a very special mom to still come to the nest. Has she realized Klints is not going to wake up yet? I hope she finds another mate and thrives herself.

I am at a loss for words. I ache for Spilva and the loss of her son, and that she wants him ALIVE.
This is so tragic, and hard to watch! I will watch this, out of my love for her. It is because I love her and I have been given the strength to be able to watch this difficult video. I must prove to myself that my love for her and Klints is greater than the pain...

Young, inexperienced mom, Spilve will eventually understand that her baby is gone for good and she must move on. Hopefully she'll find another mate for next season. For now let nature take care of these beautiful eagles. RIP little Klints; no more suffering; God Bless you!

O no, it's too sad 😥❤🌧 We know what comes next..
You know I always love your work LH ❤🦅 Please don't show if Mum starts eating Klints, we all know this is possible.
I think its sensationalism to show too much more of this. Thank you again for your great works.
Please stop now , enough is enough. 🙏🏻 I don't want to see video titled " SPILVE EATS DEAD KLINTS".
    We don't need to.😥
We all know Eagles become part of the nest, like Cookie Angel ❤🙏🏻 No sibling here to protect his body meat.
Fly high & free Klints. ❤🦅 I hope Spilve will live through this to raise another chick next year. 🙏🏻🐱☯️🌌

I feel as though I too need this extra time with dear Klints and his mama Spilve, she who, from Klint's first release from the egg, looked on her baby with what seemed wonder and fascination. So often we saw her gazing at her baby, it seemed that she adored this her first hatchling, being herself a young first-time mother eagle loving her little one. I believe Spilve is confused by the no responsiveness of Klints; it must seem as mysterious as did his entering her world helpless and needy, drawing forth her deep instinct to care for her baby: birthing her eggs, incubating, then turning to sitting her baby to provide warmth as needed, and nurturance. She quickly conquered the challenges of feeding such a tiny creature. Klints grew. Dad brought food despite local scarcity. But not enough food. When dad disappeared, I think we all dreaded what could happen even while rejoicing every time little Klints got something to eat.
This sweet family suffered. All members. It's no one's fault. It's heartbreaking in the way unexpected and terrible tragedy is. To witness starvation is horrible, unendurable, but still it continues. I tell myself Spilve is alone, but I also tell myself I don't and can't know if she perceives all of our shared love and anguish for her. I hope in some inexplicable way she does; her aloneness makes my heart hurt most of all.
I will share your suffering, Spilve, until you can move forward through the horrible confusion and grief. 💔
I love you little mama and I love your baby, now free from its awful suffering. May you soon be free from yours as well, Spilve, and find/be found by a new mate so you can give the great gift of your sweet mothering again, hopefully in a season not plagued by such scarcity.
    💞
Thank you LadyHawk for staying with this sad story, and your own sadness through it. ♥️

I hope this mother survives and nests again next season - she seems like she'd be an amazing mom. She's had a really bad time this year with her luck but hopefully she can overcome that. I can definitely see her being able to raise a big nestful of them if she gets a good partner next time round.

  • @ArmitageSeven

Not to come off as callous or unpleasant, but I've had been wondering: do golden eagles not eat their deceased chicks? I ask because the osprey chick at the Boulder County nest in Colorado passed recently, and the body has been left untouched by its parents. However, it's also been on my mind. If I recall from a few videos back, there's a food shortage in the area where the nest is at, right? Bald eagles, from what I've seen, have been shown to consume the dead chick because it not only gives them protein and calcium (from the meat and bones, so it helps with strengthening their eggs) but also protects the nest from drawing predators to acquiring the body aka the food source. Or, if you look at it from a humanistic point of view, they eat the chick to protect him/her from predators out of love.
Spilve is a good mom, but the odds were stacked against her so it's neither her or Virsis's fault Klints died. However, I've also read that human intervention has the tendency to cause even more undue stress to animals where it's not warranted. So despite the calls for it and blaming the government or the people at Latvian State Forests for something that is beyond their control of nature, I believe trying to step in would've hastened Klints's demise even more, since he was already quickly declining even before it became apparent Virsis didn't - and most likely will not - return to the nest.
As sad as it is that Klints passed, I think it'd be in Spilve's best interest that she consumes him once she comes to term with what's happened to him. Because if the lack of food is affecting the golden eagles, then obviously it's going to affect the other animals, too. And if those other animals get a whiff of Klint and are smart and hungry enough, they'll target the nest. After all, that's a free meal now, and I wouldn't blame them.

Maybe she was somehow proving to herself he is gone by eating next to him and turning her head as if to offer a bite😞 I hope she can now move on. If anyone ever says again they are just animals with no feelings direct them to these videos of Spilve💔

I hope that the mother is still eating for herself. I'd hate to see her get weak and die also. And if food is that scarce, she can eat that meal in the nest there. At some point she should be able to smell the decomposition.

The chick died 3 days ago. It wasn't dead that long before mom returned (maybe a few hours). She was there a lot but food is scarce in the area they're in. She tried her best but there was only small prey available which is not enough for a fast growing eaglet to survive on.

I wonder what happened to Dad, Virsis. I got sick of people shooting Bald Eagles in USA, especially when there were chicks to feed, so I am suspicious about what happened to him. Here in UK, gamekeepers, etc, are still poisoning and trapping Golden Eagles despite it being illegal. I read about humans causing the deaths of these beautiful birds much more often than nature causing their demise.
