Latvian Golden Eagles ~ It's Mine All Mine! Klints Mantles Prey From Virsis & Spilve 6.16.20

- Klints is now mantling and starting to protect his prey upon deliveries! First Virsis arrives with a large bird and Klints rushes over to mantle it. Virsis leaves and Klints checks out the prey. Then Spilve arrives with a small bird in her beak. She is still limping but her left foot appears to be a little better and she is able to maneuver around the nest as Klints is doing an impressive mantle and grabbing the little bird! Klints is thinking "It's mine all mine!" Spilve will eventually get the little bird back and start in on a long feeding! When she is finished you will see a huge crop on Klints with zooming! Virsis, a Golden Eagle male, and Spilve, a newly-mature Golden Eagle female, breed in their artificial nest, which was installed in 2010. Most recently the eagles successfully breed here in 2016. The nest is located in a bog on an island managed by the Latvian State Forests. Last year a female (Spilve) appeared regularly but she was too young to breed. For 2020, Spilve laid two eggs - on March 28th and April 1st. Egg #1 is non viable & egg #2 hatched on May 10, 2020.

I love watching Klints stomp around the nest in his fuzzy gray sweatpants, and I love his name ~ it's so European! 😀 Spilve definitely favors her left leg. I pray it heals quickly for her.

Oh how cute! Klints is mantling! How times flies, he is sure growing. Letting Mom & Dad know that he is claiming the food. It is mine! He's so excited to eat. Great feeding by Spilve. Klints is such a beautiful eaglet, love his colors right now. Standing tall, with a huge crop. Walking real good now. Love his chattering too!

Klints is one of the cutest babies ever!💓 I laughed out loud watching him stomp around the nest hanging onto his food mantling to prevent any sharing. Nevertheless Klint's still too young to self-feed, so his posturing is all show - and what a great show, I wouldn't miss this performance for anything, LOL,👏💓standing ovation little one🤣
Spilve stays very close by, so when Klints goes to edge of nest calling for mom to feed her, she's there in seconds💞 She's so patient while her baby continues to claim the food; eventually she gently shoves her aside to feed her stubborn little Klints. And what a great feeding, our little one can barely walk with her huge crop dragging her downward, heehee,!

She is such an attentive and loving mom, not shown at that level with the other eagles, Is it a trait specific to that branch of the eagle specie?
Hi Mich no it is not specific to the golden eagles. I believe that it is because Spilve is a first time Mom and is extra attentive to her chick. I have seen this behavior with other first time Mom's in bald eagles and White tailed eagles!
