I find these upgrades for static defenses incredibly obscure. Until now, I did not know that armor research helped their upgrades. Thank you for that. There is a lot of streamlining required for this one. Usually, I just go for early laser batteries, as those make surface defenses incredibly powerful. I've stopped bothering with orbital defenses altogether, which is rather sad.
